Robert Smith

Head Coach

Smith to lead the men's and women's swimming and diving programs in September 2015, and he enters his second season in 2016-17. Smith has experience as both a swim coach and a strength coach at Islanders Aquatics in Sayville, N.Y. and Professional Athletic Performance Center here in Garden City. At Islanders Aquatics, he served as the assistant coach of the national group, wth his main duties focusing on technique building, sprint workouts and race strategy while also overseeing dry-land, speed, strength and agility workouts. Smith graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in psychology in 2011, where he was a four-year member of the swim team for head coach Chuck Knowles.  A native of Copaigue, N.Y., Smith was an All-County, All-State and All-American swimmer at St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School and was a New York State champion in the 200 IM in 2007.

Michael Mayer

Assistant Coach

Mayer enters his second season as an assistant coach with the Adelphi University swimming and diving program, working primarily with the breaststroke and the individual medley. Mayer graduated from Adelphi in 2015 with a degree in criminal justice coupled with a successful swimming career with the Brown and Gold. Upon graduation, he returned to the team as a first year assistant coach in 2015 while pursuing his masters in the Adelphi emergency management program. During his time as a student-athlete, Mayer was a member of numerous organizations including Kappa Sigma Fraternity, Sigma Lambda Service and Leadership Honor Society, Gamma Sigma Alpha National Greek Life Honor Society, and Alpha Phi Sigma National Criminal Justice Honor Society. As team captain in the 2014-15 season, he led the team as a three-time school record holder in the 200 free relay, 200 medley relay and 400 IM. He also earned Northeast 10 Academic All-Conference and NE-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll honors.
