Alabama A&M University Men's Basketball

 Kyle Jones begins his first year at Alabama A&M University as the associate head coach. Jones comes to The Hill after assisting the men’s basketball program at Grambling State for 12 seasons and helped the Tigers win the 2024 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Men’s Basketball Tournament as GSU reached the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. During the 2017-18 season, Jones helped engineer a rebirth for the Grambling State men's basketball program as he helped guide the Tigers to 17-14 overall and 13-5 in SWAC play. During that outstanding season, Jones earned an NABC Top 30 Assistants Under 30 selection. Following that act Jones was instrumental in back to back 20 win seasons (2022-23, 2023-2024) where he was part of the season where the Tigers amassed 24 wins, which was the most in school history. In his coaching career at GSU, Jones has produced four All-SWAC Tournament team selections, four 1st team All-SWAC selections, four  2nd team All-SWAC selections, one SWAC Player of the Year (Cameron Christon), one Freshman of the Year (Nigel Riberio), two Black College All-Americans (Antwan Scott and Ivy Smith Jr.), and has helped twenty athletes to move on to the professional ranks. Born and raised in Shreveport, Louisiana, Jones is the oldest of three siblings. His parents are the late Antonia Anguiano and Mack Jones.  While growing up in Shreveport, Jones played for his father, Mack Jones who was a legendary Louisiana high school coach, taking the Huntington Raiders to the Top 28 in 2008 which was the second time in school history while achieving the best record in school history, 37-4.    Jones moved on to play for George Ivory at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (2008-2013). He was a member UAPB's 2010 SWAC championship team which was the first SWAC basketball title in school history. After an incredible career at UAPB, Jones followed in his father's footsteps and stepped right into coaching.  Jones holds a B.S. in English (2013) from University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff and a Master’s in Sports Administration (2014) from Grambling State University. He is seeking his doctoral degree in Developmental Education. 

Cameron Prather begins his first season as an assistant coach at Alabama A&M University.   Prather, who is a rising talent in collegiate basketball coaching, is widely respected for his work ethic, player development skills, and recruiting success. He most recently spent two seasons at Grambling State University under head coach Donte Jackson, where he was deeply involved in recruiting, scouting, player development, and the day-to-day operations of the program.   Prior to his time at Grambling State, Prather served as an assistant coach at Wallace State Community College. Over three seasons, he helped lead Wallace State to a 62-26 record while developing two NJCAA All-Americans, four JUCO Top 100 players, two JUCO Top 50 players, and multiple all-conference selections. He helped guide nine student-athletes to NCAA Division I programs, including James Flippin, PJ Eason, Solomon Ray, and Jalen Carruth—all of whom followed him to GSU. He also played a major role in the development of First Team NJCAA All-American Jimmie Williams.   Before Wallace State, Prather was an assistant coach at Athens Prep Academy in Tennessee, where he helped develop numerous Division I players. His standout recruits from that program include Darlinstone Dubar (Tennessee), Josaphat Bilau (Wichita State), Christian Jackson (UMass), Isaac Spears (Montana State), Keishawn Davidson (Belmont), Angelo Stuart (Milwaukee), and Chris Nix (UT Martin).   A native of Tennessee, Prather is a graduate of Whites Creek High School, where he was a standout student-athlete. He played collegiately at Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee from 2011- 2015. As a player, he was part of a 22-10 team ranked in the Division II Top 20 during the 2011–12 season and a Top 25 squad in 2013–14. Prather earned First Team All-Defense honors in 2014, showcasing his commitment and intensity on the court.   Prather earned his bachelor’s in health and human Performance with an emphasis in sports management and his master’s in business administration. He served as a graduate assistant there for two seasons before moving on to Athens Prep.   With a foundation rooted in his own playing experience and a strong track record of developing next-level talent, Cameron Prather continues to make his mark as one of the most promising young coaches in college basketball.  

Devarus Walker begins his first season as an assistant coach at Alabama A&M University.   Walker comes to The Hill after serving three years as an assistant coach at Grambling State University, where he helped the Tigers win the 2023-24 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) regular season and men’s basketball tournament as GSU advanced to the NCAA Division I Basketball Tournament. Before Grambling State, Walker spent the previous five seasons at Stillman College. While at Stillman, he helped guide them to a 112-34 overall record with five NAIA National Tournament appearances with their farthest appearance being the Sweet 16 in 2021. He also recruited and coached several Player of the Year, All Americans and All conferences players.    Before Stillman College, Walker spent a year at Jones College (MS) guiding them to a 29-2 overall record, a state and regional championship, along with a Sweet 16 appearance in the NJCAA National Tournament.    Prior to Jones College, Walker, a former East Central CC (MS) basketball standout, spent four years at his alma mater as an assistant to his former coach, Maurice Bowie, and Robert Thompson. He was a member of the Warriors basketball and tennis team from 2007 to 2009.   Walker brings an outstanding track record of player development, having coached several players to Division 1 institutions such as Big South, Conference USA, SEC, Southland, SWAC, WAC, and other 4-year institutions as well.   Walker is a native of Hickory, Mississippi, and a 2007 graduate of Newton County HS. He was a standout in basketball and tennis, in which he won several state tennis championships. He received honors in both sports.    Walker earned an associate degree in Liberal Arts at East Central CC in 2009 and a bachelor’s degree in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation at William Carey in 2012, where he also played basketball and tennis. He received his Master's Degree in Sports Administration during the Spring of 2024 from Grambling State. He is married to Charmayne Walker, and they have 2 sons, Hunter and Bryce.  

Roosevelt (Cal) Cochran enters his third season as the Associate Head Coach at Alabama A&M University, and brings along a variety of coaching experience on multiple levels, including the same role with the Nigerian National Olympic Team prior to coming to Huntsville.   During his previous two seasons on “The Hill”, Cochran has coached and mentored several student-athletes, including Chad Moodie and Lorenzo Downey. In 2024, Moodie was selected the 2024 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Men’s Basketball Freshman of the Year and earned the team’s most improved award. Downey also garnered major honors, earning a spot on the 2024 SWAC Men’s Basketball Tournament Team.   In addition, Cochran also elevated the status of several future professional athletes.   Xavier Brewer was chosen to the 2023 NBA Detroit Pistons Summer League team, while Blaise Akonobi was selected in the 2023 NBA G League Draft by the Portland Trail Blazers organization’s Grand Rapid Gold, with the 14th overall selection. Also, Garrett Hicks signed a professional contract in 2024 with the BC Rashi Tibillsi in the overseas country of Georgia.   Prior to coming to Alabama A&M, Cochran won nearly 300 games as a head coach during his career, along with a four-year playing career at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.   While with the Nigerian National Team, he assisted in administration and complete application of basketball systems, to include skills improvement programs, practice schemes, and in game strategies that included scouting reports, staff professional enlargement and fundraising, among other duties.   Cochran is also part of the Frontcourt Management Group located in Daytona Beach, Fla. where he is an International Coaching Consultant, serving on several community boards and committees to provide support to several charities in Volusia County. He also consulted with coaches for fitness regimen to enhance abilities, limit injuries, increase longevity, and promote self-esteem internationally.   In addition, Cochran coached on both women and men staffs at Daytona State College, serving as the assistant coach for the men from 2007-08, before being named the head women’s coach, a position he held from 2008-16.   While at Daytona State, he managed all aspects of basketball operations to include supervising staff, game management, coaching, recruiting, upskilling, and performance. He also monitored study table schedules, tutorial appointments, progress reports and weekly meetings with players.   Also during his tenure with the Falcons, Cochran won four conference titles and was named Mid-Florida Conference Coach of the Year four times along with being a finalist for National Coach of the Year once.   Cochran also previously served as an assistant coach under Rob Spivery at the University of Montevallo and Alabama State University.   During his collegiate career, Cochran starred at the point guard spot at UT-Chattanooga, where he helped the Mocs win a pair of Southern Conference titles along with two appearances in the NCAA Tournament. He is also a member of the UTC Hall of Fame.   He holds an undergraduate degree in business administration from Chattanooga and received his master's degree in education from the University of West Florida. Cochran is married to the former Andrea Jackson and has three sons, Calvin III, Caleb, and Jonathan.
