Chris Stevens
Head Coach
Stevens was awarded his second coach of the year award for his efforts and achievements. Perhaps the greatest coaching achievement for Stevens has been his ability to motivate and place sophomores at four-year universities. In the past six years that rate has been nearly 100 percent. His sophomore classes have produced a remarkable 96 percent graduation and/or transfer success-rate, with a vast majority of those receiving athletic scholarships, including every sophomore on the 2011 and 2014 teams. Stevens has sent more than 100 players on to a four-year university or straight to the pros. This is in addition to the hundreds of players who have gone on to have success after leaving Allan Hancock College. Before Stevens arrived at Hancock, he spent five years at Righetti High School in Santa Maria, serving as athletic director and head baseball coach. In 1997, his first year at Righetti, he guided his team to their first playoff appearance in several years, finishing second in the Northern League. The following two seasons he led the Warriors to back-to-back league titles. His 1999 team played in the CIF-Southern Section Championship game at Anaheim Stadium, the first championship final appearance for the school in its 44-year history. Stevens finished his career at Righetti with a record of 95-41 (.698) and was recognized twice with coach of the year honors. In 1996, Stevens served as a full-time assistant coach at Cal State Northridge. The Matadors had a break-out season with a 52-18 record and the universitys first ever Western Athletic Conference Championship. The Matadors came within one game of a berth in the College World Series, falling to Florida State in the regional championship game. From 1992-1995 Stevens served as head coach at Oxnard College. At the time only 24 years old, he was the then youngest collegiate head coach in the state of California. Fortunate to get the job after the college had cancelled the program at the end of the previous season; Stevens had to fill his team with the school year already underway. He made it work and in his second season, the Condors doubled their win total from the prior season and by his third year, the club achieved its third 20-win season in school history. In 1995, his Oxnard College team won 23 games and ranked as high as 13th in the Southern California Community College poll. Before arriving at Oxnard College, Stevens was head coach at Western Christian High School in Covina, where he directed his teams to two CIF-Southern Section playoff appearances in 1990 and 1991. Over the next two seasons, his Lancers compiled a combined 29-16 record. Stevens was honored as Alpha League Coach of the Year after reviving a 4-17 team and leading them to a 15-9 season, second place in the league and a CIF-SS playoff berth. His 1991 team again finished second in the league and ranked seventh in the final CIF-Southern Section poll. Stevens began his coaching career at Azusa Pacific University in 1989, just one year removed from his collegiate playing career. The Cougars went 30-19 that season and competed in the NAIA West Regional playoffs. An Allan Hancock College baseball alum, Stevens played under John Osborne for the Bulldogs in 1985 and 1986. He earned All-Western State Conference honors and was rewarded with a baseball scholarship to Azusa Pacific. Over his two-year career at APU, he hit an impressive .345, with eight home runs and 56 RBIs. One of his greatest strengths was his ability to put the ball in play, striking out just 22 times in 280 plate appearances. Stevens earned All-Conference and All-NAIA West Region honors at APU. In addition to his school-based coaching duties, Stevens spent six summers (1989-94) with former Dodger coach Mark Cresse as an instructor at the Mark Cresse School of Baseball. Since 1997 Stevens has served as head coach for National Baseball Congress semi-pro teams, including the Santa Maria Stars and Santa Maria Indians. Stevens received his bachelors degree in kinesiology in 1988 and his masters degree in education in 1990 from Azusa Pacific University. He also holds an administrative services credential from Chapman University. He and wife Laura have three children, Kayla, Sarah and Ryan. His email address is
