Mike Denne
Assistant Coach
Denne has guided the Hancock mens golf program to three team appearances in the state regionals. The Bulldogs advanced to the Northern California Regional in 1992, and to the Southern California Regional in 1996 and 2002. Recently, Denne coached Austin Kaiser to the state finals, which was hosted at the Santa Maria Country Club. Kaiser finished fourth in the state and received a scholarship to play Division I-golf at San Diego State University. In 2004, Coach Dennes top player, sophomore Josh Warthen of Arroyo Grande, was the Western State Conference medalist winner in the Southern California Regional. He also finished runner-up in the State Tournament by one stroke. Under Denne, Matt Murray, finished as the states individual runner-up in 1996 and was the Coast Valley Conference medalist in both 1995 and 1996. Nearly 10 of his golfers have received scholarships to continue their careers at four-year schools, and nearly a dozen have turned professional, either as tour players or instructors. In addition to his success as a golf coach, Denne served area football programs aswell . He began his gridiron career as an assistant coach at St .Joseph High School in 1977. He became the Knights head coach in 1979, and over the next 11 seasons, he guided his team to the CIF Southern Section playoffs 10 times. In 1986, behind the play of former NFL veteran quarterback Mark Brunnell, the Knights advanced to the CIF championship game. Denne led the Knights to the CIF semifinals on three other occasions. He was named the Southern California Catholic Association Coach of the Year in 1988. From 1990 through 1992, he served as head football coach at Allan Hancock College. Denne resumed his football coaching career under Larry Welch at Cal Poly in 1997, helping guide the Mustangs to a 10-1 record. He remained on Welchs staff through the 2001 season, and all the while maintained his association with the Allan Hancock College golf program. A native of Lompoc, Denne was a four-sport varsity letterman at Cabrillo High School, excelling in football, wrestling, track and field and baseball. He went on to Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo where he graduated with a bachelors degree in physical education in 1977.
