Leo Mayo

Head Coach

Mayo will be in his 10th season as head cross country and track and field coach at American International College in 2015-16. He was hired in August of 2006 as the Colleges first ever coach and given the task of creating a competitive team within the tough Northeast-10 Conference in the NCAA Division II. The 2014-15 season proved to be his best yet, leading the mens cross country team to its first ever Northeast-10 Conference Championship. His team tied an NE-10 meet record with 19 points as the Yellow Jackets notched six of the first eight runners across the line, including the first three competitors. Mayo followed that up with the programs first-ever NE-10 Indoor Championship. Mayo was named both the NE-10 and U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Coaches of the Year in XC and Indoor Track. Following the NE-10 Cross Country Title, Mayo led AIC to its second NCAA Division II East Region crown and its second trip, as a team, to the NCAA Division II National Championship. In the upcoming 2015-16 track season, Mayo will be returning All-Americans on both the mens and womens sides led by junior sprinter Shaina Blamahsah. Blamahasah earned her first All-American status during the indoor championship in the 60 meter dash and followed it up with a top performance outdoors in the 100 meter dash. On the mens side, sophomore Jashane Brown, who made his first NCAA appearance in outdoors, will help lead a strong stable of young sprinters, while senior Jeremy Antivo returns as an All-American on the distance side for his final season under Mayo. In three years under Mayo, Michael Biwott (15) ran his way into the record books countless times. The 10-time All-American was a force in the East Region, selected NE-10 XC Athlete of the Year three times, Indoor Athlete of the Year twice and concluded his career with his first Conference Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year in 2015. In 2012, Mayo led Dominic Smith (12) to a National Championship in the 400 meter run at the Indoor Champs. Smith ran a 47.84 second time to earn the schools only national title in any sport. Coach Mayo has recruited across the globe and it has paid off well. Along with Biwott, he has brought in All-Americans Glarius Rop (13) and Jeptui Cherutich (14) from Kenya, along with recent graduate Tonique Sobah (15) from Jamaica and cross country All-American Alexandra Stasiuk from just north of the border in Canada. Mayo has recruited athletes from the Bahamas, Canada, England, Ireland, France, Jamaica, Kenya and Wales. After his hiring in 2006, Coach Mayo saw early success. With just three recruiting classes, he was able to build a team that finished as high as second in both indoor and outdoor track and field in 2010. Before starting at AIC, Mayo earned his bachelors degree in Physical Education in 2002 from Central Connecticut State University where he competed as a top member of the cross country and track and field teams. Mayo still holds the school record in the outdoor 3,000 meter run and earned All-IC4A and Northeast Conference accolades for his efforts in cross country. Mayo completed his Masters of Education from American International College in 2008. Assistant Coach

Nicholson is entering his second season as the American International Assistant Track and Field Coach. The Yellow Jackets saw great success in Nicholsons first year. Records fell indoors as Tonique Sobah broke American Internationals 60 meter hurdle record, while Freshman Akayla Anderson won the Indoor 60 hurdle title.   During the outdoor season, Sobah continued her hurdler dominance by improving her 100m Hurdler record that placed her 17 th at the NCAA Division II National Championship, while winning the New England NEICCA Championship at the same event. Anderson went on to win the 100m Hurdles and added a second place finish in the 400m Hurdles with a program record.   Under his guidance, the Yellow Jacket men impressed at the Norheast-10 Championships with both mens relay teams winning the 4x100 and 4x400 Championships, as well as, Dennis Stephenson winning the 100m and 200m titles. Additionally, the Mens 4x100 relay team posted a program record performance while going on to win the New England NEICCA Championship.   Before joining the AIC staff, Nicholson was previously at Queens College (Flushing, NY), where he helped lead the mens team to their first ever East Coast Conference Outdoor Championship. A 2006 graduate of Eastern Connecticut State University Coach, Nicholson had a stellar athletic career where he was the 2005 and 2006 Male Athlete of the Year. Additionally, the Windsor, Connecticut native, earned All-American status in 2006 for the 400 meter run. Since earning a degree in Sports and Leisure Management with a concentration in Sports Management from ECSU, Nicholson moved on to Division I Wagner College, where he got an MBA and served as an assistant coach for the Seahawks sprints and jumps athletes.  While at Wagner, Nicholsons tutelage led to numerous school record holders, NCAA Regional qualifiers, All-NEC and All-ECAC performers. In addition to his undergraduate and Masters degrees, Nicholson holds a USATF Level 1 Certification.
