Leo Mayo

Head Coach

Mayo will be in his 10th season as head cross country and track and field coach at American International College in 2015-16. He was hired in August of 2006 as the Colleges first ever coach and given the task of creating a competitive team within the tough Northeast-10 Conference in the NCAA Division II. The 2014-15 season proved to be his best yet, leading the mens cross country team to its first ever Northeast-10 Conference Championship. His team tied an NE-10 meet record with 19 points as the Yellow Jackets notched six of the first eight runners across the line, including the first three competitors. Mayo followed that up with the programs first-ever NE-10 Indoor Championship. Mayo was named both the NE-10 and U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Coaches of the Year in XC and Indoor Track. Following the NE-10 Cross Country Title, Mayo led AIC to its second NCAA Division II East Region crown and its second trip, as a team, to the NCAA Division II National Championship. In the upcoming 2015-16 track season, Mayo will be returning All-Americans on both the mens and womens sides led by junior sprinter Shaina Blamahsah. Blamahasah earned her first All-American status during the indoor championship in the 60 meter dash and followed it up with a top performance outdoors in the 100 meter dash. On the mens side, sophomore Jashane Brown, who made his first NCAA appearance in outdoors, will help lead a strong stable of young sprinters, while senior Jeremy Antivo returns as an All-American on the distance side for his final season under Mayo. In three years under Mayo, Michael Biwott (15) ran his way into the record books countless times. The 10-time All-American was a force in the East Region, selected NE-10 XC Athlete of the Year three times, Indoor Athlete of the Year twice and concluded his career with his first Conference Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year in 2015. In 2012, Mayo led Dominic Smith (12) to a National Championship in the 400 meter run at the Indoor Champs. Smith ran a 47.84 second time to earn the schools only national title in any sport. Coach Mayo has recruited across the globe and it has paid off well. Along with Biwott, he has brought in All-Americans Glarius Rop (13) and Jeptui Cherutich (14) from Kenya, along with recent graduate Tonique Sobah (15) from Jamaica and cross country All-American Alexandra Stasiuk from just north of the border in Canada. Mayo has recruited athletes from the Bahamas, Canada, England, Ireland, France, Jamaica, Kenya and Wales. After his hiring in 2006, Coach Mayo saw early success. With just three recruiting classes, he was able to build a team that finished as high as second in both indoor and outdoor track and field in 2010. Before starting at AIC, Mayo earned his bachelors degree in Physical Education in 2002 from Central Connecticut State University where he competed as a top member of the cross country and track and field teams. Mayo still holds the school record in the outdoor 3,000 meter run and earned All-IC4A and Northeast Conference accolades for his efforts in cross country. Mayo completed his Masters of Education from American International College in 2008.
