Garrett Hendrickson
Head Coach
Garrett Hendrickson (Concordia-Moorhead '17) was named the sixth head coach in the modern era (since 1959) of the Augsburg University men's hockey team in August 2023. He served as an assistant coach for the Auggies for two seasons (2021-23) before being named as head coach. As part of Greg "Boom" May’s coaching staff, Hendrickson helped guide the Auggies to the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season championship and the NCAA Division III national semifinals in the 2021-22 season, and the MIAC playoff title and a national playoff berth in 2022-23. Augsburg was 41-15-2 overall and 24-7-1 in MIAC play the last two seasons. The Auggies went 25-5-0 overall and 14-2-0 in MIAC play in 2021-22, winning the MIAC regular-season title for the 11th time in school history. The Auggies topped perennial rival St. Norbert (Wis.) in the NCAA quarterfinals to reach the NCAA semifinal round for the third time in school history, finishing in a tie for third nationally. In 2022-23, Augsburg finished with a 16-10-2 overall record and 10-5-1 mark in MIAC play, finishing second in the conference regular-season standings. The Auggies claimed a 4-1 win at regular-season champion St. Scholastica in the MIAC playoff championship, winning the postseason title for the sixth time in school history. The Auggies advanced to the NCAA national tournament for the eighth time in school history and sixth time in an eight-year span. Hendrickson has accomplished a great deal in his young coaching career, after his playing days were completed at Concordia College-Moorhead in 2017. Prior to coming to Augsburg, Hendrickson served as an assistant coach for the North American Hockey League’s Bismarck (N.D.) Bobcats in 2020-21. The Bobcats finished 29-21 overall and 3-3 in the league’s Robertson Cup playoffs that season. Also as a junior hockey coach, he served as an assistant coach for the Superior International Junior Hockey League’s Wisconsin Lumberjacks in 2019-20, and as an assistant coach/assistant general manager for the NAHL’s Minnesota Wilderness in 2018-19. A native of Virginia, Minn., Hendrickson played collegiately as a forward at Concordia-Moorhead, earning All-MIAC Honorable Mention honors in 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2016-17, while earning MIAC All-Rookie Team honors in 2013-14. An alternate captain his senior year, Hendrickson played in 100 career games for the Cobbers, scoring 26 goals with 45 assists for 71 points. An Associated Press Minnesota All-State first-team selection in 2010-11, he was a high school star for the Virginia/Mountain Iron-Buhl boys’ hockey team, scoring 76 goals with 113 assists for 189 points in his final three seasons, including a 27-goal, 45-assist effort his senior season. He played junior hockey in the British Columbia Hockey League for the Penticton Vees (2011-12) and Salmon Arm Silverbacks (2011-13), and for the NAHL’s Coulee Region Chill (2012-13), prior to his collegiate career. Hendrickson was a communications major at Concordia-Moorhead. He married his wife Andrea, a middle school math teacher in the Stillwater (Minn.) School District, in April 2023. Mike LaValle

LaValle (Lakewood CC) enters his 17th season as an Augsburg assistant coach in 2016-17. Lavalle has worked with both the varsity and junior varsity teams at Augsburg during his tenure. A 1987 graduate of Hill-Murray HS, he has served as a coach for several levels of youth and high school age hockey, including stints with the White Bear Lake Hockey Association and the Hill-Murray based A & L Pioneer hockey program. Prior to coming to Augsburg, he was the head coach and assistant general manager for the East Metro Lakers Junior B team for four years. He coached the Lakers squad to a national championship in his final year there from 1995-99. A native of Maplewood, Minn., LaValle and his wife, Jessica reside in Oakdale, Minn. with their son Zach and daughter Haley. Lavalle has also served as an instructor with the Pro Edge Power Skating and Hockey school for the past several years, working with mite to high school players. LaValle is currently pursuing a bachelors degree at Metro State University in St. Paul, Minn. Mike LaValle (Lakewood CC) enters his 17th season as an Augsburg assistant coach in 2016-17. Chris Johnson
Assistant Coach
Johnson also serves the Augsburg athletic department as men's athletic equipment supervisor. As a forward, Johnson appeared in 104 games in his Augsburg career, with 41 goals and 74 assists for 115 points, and was a member of teams that earned Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoff berths three times in his four seasons. He was the MIAC's scoring champion in both overall and conference play in the 2008-09 season, leading the league in points and assists in both overall and conference games-only play. He had a goal or assist in 64 of his 104 career games. He earned All-MIAC honors in his junior and senior seasons, while earning All-MIAC honorable-mention honors his first two campaigns and earning MIAC All-Rookie Team honors in 2006-07. He was named to the American Hockey Coaches Association/RBK Hockey All-American (West Region) second team in both 2008-09 and 2009-10, while also being named to the All-USCHO West Region honorable-mention squad by U.S. College Hockey Online in 2008-09. Johnson also earned MIAC Player of the Week honors three times in his career. A native of Madison, Wis., Johnson was a finance major at Augsburg, and was a finalist for the Male Honor Athlete and Male Athlete of the Year awards at the 2010 Auggie Awards. He was also a finalist for the Male Athlete of the Year award at the 2009 Auggie Awards. Johnson completed graduate work for his Master of Arts in Leadership from Augsburg in 2014. A two-year captain for the Auggies, Johnson is a member of a legendary American hockey family. His father, Mark Johnson, served as the head coach of the silver-medal-winning U.S. Olympic women's hockey team at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics (and is also the women's hockey head coach at the University of Wisconsin), and was a member of the "Miracle on Ice" 1980 U.S. Olympic men's hockey gold-medal-winning team. Chris' grandfather was the late "Badger Bob" Johnson, a legendary coach at both the collegiate and pro level. Chris' younger brother, Patrick Johnson, played collegiately at the University of Wisconsin and was a 2008 seventh-round draftee of the NHL's Montreal Canadiens. His younger sister, Megan Johnson, is a member of the Augsburg women's hockey team.
