Tony Valek

Head Coach

Tony Valek (Augsburg '12) was named the 11th head coach in the history of the Augsburg University men’s wrestling program in the summer of 2019, joining Jim Moulsoff as a co-head coach. He was named the solo head coach prior to the 2022-23 season. He served as a graduate assistant coach from 2012-14, assistant coach in 2014-15, and associate head coach from 2015-19. During his Augsburg coaching tenure, Valek has been a part of the 2014-15, 2018-19, 2022-23 and 2023-24 national title squads and national runner-up squads in 2016-17 and 2017-18, with 67 All-Americans (54 NCAA, 13 NWCA) and 13 national champions. Augsburg is 122-30 in dual meets in Valek’s 13 seasons, 49-6 as head coach. Augsburg Coaching Highlights: Led the Auggies to a 16-0 dual-meet record, NWCA D-III National Duals title and a third-place finish at the NCAA Division III National Championships in 2024-25.  Led the Auggies to their 15th NCAA Division III National Championship and an Upper Midwest Regional Championship in 2023-24.  Guided the Auggies to their 14th NCAA Division III National Championship and an Upper Midwest Regional Championship in 2022-23. Led Augsburg to an Upper Midwest Regional Championship and third-place finish at the NCAA Division III National Championships in 2021-22. Led the Auggies to a No. 1 national ranking going into the 2020 NCAA Division III national championships, which were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Helped lead the Auggies to the 2019 NCAA Division III team national championship Guided Augsburg to a second-place team finish at the 2018 NCAA Division III National Championships and the 2018 NWCA National Dual Meet Championship. Jim Moulsoff

Associate Head Coach

Augsburg Men's Wrestling Associate Head Coach Jim Moulsoff has coached 70 individual All-Americans, 14 individual NCAA National Champions, and 65 NWCA Scholar All-Americans. During his Augsburg tenure, the Auggies have never placed out of the top 10 nationally and have won the NCAA D-III National Championship three times (2010, 2015 & 2019). Moulsoff was named the NCAA Division III National Coach of the Year in 2015 and 2019 and has been named the NCAA Region Coach of the year in every season he has served as head coach. Augsburg Coaching Highlights: 2019-20 – Led Augsburg to a #1 ranking nationally going into the NCAA Division III national championships which were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Eight individuals were recognized as NWCA First-Team All-Americans which was the most in the country. The Auggies finished in 9th-place in the NWCA Academic Team national standings with nine Scholar All-Americans. Victor Gliva was named the Elite 90 Award winner as the wrestler with the highest GPA at the National Championships for a record third year in a row. 2018-19 – Led Augsburg to the program’s 13th NCAA Division III national team championship with seven All-Americans and four individual national champions. Moulsoff was named the NCAA DIII National Coach of the Year. The Auggies also finished in 18th-place in the NWCA Academic Team national standings with six Scholar All-Americans. Victor Gliva was named the Elite 90 Award winner as the wrestler with the highest GPA at the National Championships for the second year in a row. 2017-18 – Led Augsburg to the NWCA National Duals Championship and a team national runner-up finish at the NCAA DIII National Championships with five individual All-Americans and two individual national champions. Lucas Jeske was named Outstanding wrestler of the National Championships. The Auggies also finished in 4th place in the NWCA academic team national standings with eight scholar All-Americans. Victor Gliva was named the Elite 90 Award winner as the wrestler with the highest GPA at the National Champions. 2016-17 – Led Augsburg to a team national runner-up finish at the NCAA Division III National Championships with five individual All-Americans, four of which were first-year wrestlers. The Auggies also finished as NWCA Academic Team National Runner-Up, while recording the most NWCA Scholar All-Americans (nine) of any Division III institution. 2015-16 – Led Augsburg to a fifth place finish at the NCAA Division III National Championships with four individual All-Americans. The Auggies also finished in 10th-place in the NWCA academic team national standings with four Scholar All-Americans. 2014-15 – Led Augsburg to the program’s 12th NCAA Division III national team championship in his first year as head coach with six individual All-Americans and two individual national champions. Moulsoff was named the NWCA Dave Icenhower National Coach of the Year. The Auggies also finished in 14th-place in the NWCA Academic Team national standings with five NWCA Scholar All-Americans. 2007-14 – As an assistant coach, Moulsoff coached 35 individual All-Americans, six individual National Champions, and 24 Scholar All-Americans. He also helped coach the 2010 NCAA National Championship team and three National Runner-Up teams. John Peterson

Assistant Coach

Peterson (Wisconsin-Stout 71), an Olympic champion, two-time Olympic medalist, three-time World Cup champion and a member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, will be assisting the Auggies with personal development. Peterson earned a silver medal as a freestyle wrestler at the 1972 Olympics, then won the 180.5-pound freestyle gold medal at the 1976 Olympics. He earned World Cup championships in 1973, 1975 and 1980. As a collegiate wrestler at Wisconsin-Stout, he was an NAIA All-American (fifth place) in 1971 and earned three conference titles. He was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1986. He has shared his faith with people around the world, working with Athletes In Action and Campus Crusade for Christ. Along with his brother, fellow Olympic wrestling champion Ben Peterson, the duo founded Camp of Champs in 1977. Brad Fisher

Assistant Coach

Fisher was a three-time All-American at Augsburg, finishing his career with a 118-30 record. Fisher finished second at the NCAA Division III national championships at 141 pounds in 2001, fourth in 2002 and sixth in 1999. Fisher also won three MIAC championships in his career (1999, 2001, 2002). Fisher was a two-time state champion at Austin (Minn.) High School, making state history as the first eighth-grader to win a wrestling state title in Minnesota history in 1993. Augsburg College 4 (2005-present)

Massey , a former All-American during his wrestling career, enters his second season as a member of the Augsburg coaching staff in 2012-13. Wrestling Career/Acheivements: Massey was a three-time All-American at Augsburg, winning the national title at 197 pounds in 2009 while finishing second in 2011 and third in 2010. He had a 79-4 record in three seasons at Augsburg (84-6 collegiate overall record). A four-time Minnesota state tournament qualifier and two-time state champion at Centennial HS (Circle Pines, Minn.), Massey wrestled at Division I Wisconsin in the 2003-04 season before returning to college at Augsburg in the 2008-09 campaign. Personal/Family Notes: A native of Circle Pines, Minn., Massey was a health and physical education major at Augsburg. Justin Koob has been a key member of the Augsburg Wrestling coaching staff since 2017. He also coached 12 individual state place winners, three state finalists, and an individual state champion. Koob graduated from Augsburg in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.
