David Thompson
Head Coach
Thompson, who was an assistant under Whiteside from 2003 to 2007, returned to Augustana after two seasons as the mens head track & field coach at Williams University in Williamstown, Massachusetts. In 2014, Thompsons Ephs had five outdoor national qualifiers in seven eventstwo of which achieved All-America honorsand took down three school records. His 2014 squad also placed fourth in a 35-team field at the Indoor Division III New England Championship and finished fourth at the NESCAC Championships. In addition, with a cumulative grade point average of 3.35, Williams was named a USTFCCCA All-Academic team. During the 2015 indoor season, Thompson led the Ephs to a third-place finish among 35 teams at the Indoor Division III New England Championship. Williams also had four national qualifiers and broke three school records this winter. Thompson is a 1999 graduate of North Central College in Naperville, Illinois and is currently pursuing his masters degree in sports management at Western Illinois University. While competing for the Cardinals, he was an 11-time All-American and three-time national champion. He won the 1997 indoor long jump title with a mark of 24 1¾ and the 1998 outdoor 200 meter championship in :21.41. He was also a member of North Centrals national champion 4x100 relay outdoors in 1998. Through the 2014 season, he was still a school record holder in the outdoor 100 (:10.56) and 200 (:21.25) as well as the 4x100 relay (:40.78). In his first stint at Augustana, Thompson served as an assistant for Whiteside, coaching sprints and jumps. His athletes broke three school records and set three national qualifying marks. In November of 2006, Thompson was named mens and womens track & field and cross country head coach at Ashford University in Clinton, Iowa. While there, his athletes set over 20 school records and he had seven indoor conference champions and two indoor national qualifiers. From 2008 to 2011, Thompson was the head track & field coach for both the men and womens teams at Dubuque University in Dubuque, Iowa, where he had a national indoor champion in the 55 meters. Prior to moving to Williams, he was the womens and mens head coach for track & field at the State University of New York at Oswego, where his athletes broke 12 school records and won two SUNYAC championships. Bob Sager
Assistant Coach
Sager will be continuing his Augustana coaching career as he returns for his second season as the Vikings womens throws coach. Prior to Augustana, Sager coached boys track and field at Rock Island High School from 2001-10. In 2003, Sagers discus throwers broke the record that he helped set in 1967 during his competition days. Sager served two tours in Vietnam and worked for 30 years at the Rock Island Arsenal in communication. Coach Sager also served in Desert Storm and Desert Shield in Iraq and well as Desert Freedom in Afghanistan. Sager and his wife, Diann, have resided in Rock Island most of their lives and have five grown children as well as 10 grandchildren. Sager is currently a record holder in the Quad City Senior Olympics.

Adam Myers
Assistant Coach
Myers, a 2012 graduate of Augustana, will coach for the womens track and field team alongside head coach Fred Whiteside. Myers, an All-American as well as the school record holder in hammer, will be coaching the Viking throwers for the second season. Myers graduated with a degree in biology and was also a Deans list student. He was also involved in Beta Beta Beta, a biological honor society. During both his junior and senior seasons at Augustana Myers made appearances at the NCAA Division III National Track & Field Championships. He was voted co-MVP of field events as well as Most Improved. Myers is a native of Fort Atkinson, Iowa, but moved to Illinois and graduated from Dixon High School. At Dixon Myers competed in football, track, and scholastic bowl. He was a state qualifier his senior year in discus and came to Augustana as both a shot putter and discus thrower before narrowing his focus solely to hammer throw.

Chad Thomas
Assistant Coach
Chad Thomas enters his 29th season as the pole vault coach with the Vikings track and field team in 2023. Chad has a BS from Muskingum University where he himself was a 5-time NCAA Champion and 9-time All-American in the vault. During his tenure at Augustana, he has mentored 1 NCAA champion, 11 All-Americans, 35 Conference Champions and over 75 All-Conference performers in the pole vault alone. Chad is originally from Ohio and lives with his family in the Quad Cities. Chad enjoys mentoring area coaches and hosting camps and clinics for pole vault in the Quad City area.
