Matt Soja

Head Coach

Soja will begin his eighth season as the head coach of the men's cross country program. Matt is very familiar with the program, as he ran for three years on the team (2005-'07) as an undergraduate and helped elevate the program from club to varsity status in 2006. He is considered one of the top runners in the history of the program, and finished in first place individually at the 2006 CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Finals at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. During the 2005 season, the team was a club sport then, but Matt still managed to finish in second place individually at the conference finals that year. He was named CUNYAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year Honorable Mention in 2008, and served as Vice President of the Baruch Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) during 2007-'08. Matt graduated from Baruch in February '09, with a degree in finance and investments, and a minor in mathematics. An avid year-round runner, Matt also competes in various road races as a member of Van Cortlandt Track Club. Matt is married to Mercedes (Zegarra) '08, who was also a highly successful varsity runner for the Baruch women's cross country team and a current assistant coach. They recently welcomed into the world their first daughter (Molly).
