Head Coach

Scott Schumacher enters his 14th season as the Buccaneers’ athletic director and head men’s basketball coach.   Blinn played to a 17-14 record in 2024-25 with a 13-9 performance in Region XIV matchups. The Buccaneers finished fourth in the region standings and earned a first-round bye in the Region XIV Tournament. At season's end, sophomore forwards Anthony Isaac (first-team) and London Maiden (second-team) along with sophomore guard Reese Miller (second-team) landed on the Region XIV all-region list. Isaac was also named an honorable mention on the NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball All-America team. Isaac went on to sign with Manhattan University, Maiden committed to the University of Detroit Mercy, and Miller signed with The College of William & Mary. The Buccaneers posted a 23-8 record during the 2023-24 campaign, including a 14-5 mark in the Region XIV South, which was good for second place. Blinn earned a first-round bye in the Region XIV Tournament before bowing out in the quarterfinals.   Blinn ended its 2022-23 season with a 23-8 overall record and placed second in the Region XIV South Zone with a 16-3 mark. Blinn qualified for the Region XIV Tournament with a first-round bye before ending its season in the quarterfinals. The season also saw sophomore guard Elijah Elliott earn NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball All-America honors with a third-team selection.  Also in 2023, Schumacher was inducted into and enshrined in the NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame and the Kilgore College Hall of Fame.  In 36 years as a junior college head coach, Schumacher has compiled a career record of 674-393, including a 224-146 record at Blinn. He is ranked ninth all-time in wins among active men’s basketball coaches across 439 NJCAA programs. He has led three different junior college programs to conference championships and top-10 national rankings in the NJCAA polls. In six of the last eight seasons, Schumacher has led the Buccaneers to 20 or more wins. He has coached collegiate basketball for 39 years and is in his 17th year as an athletic director.   Thirty-two of 36 years have been spent as a head basketball coach in the Region XIV Conference. Schumacher previously coached league rivals Paris Junior College and Kilgore College, and is the only coach in TEAC history to lead two different programs to a conference championship. Prior to Blinn, Schumacher was the athletic director and head basketball coach at North Dakota State College of Science, leading the Wildcats to a national tournament bid and three conference championships.   Schumacher has coached 13 NJCAA All-Americans. More than 87 of his players have signed Division I scholarships and more than 37 have gone on to play professionally. He has had the privilege to coach an SEC player of the year, a Big 12 Tournament MVP, a Big Sky Tournament MVP, and an NCAA slam dunk champion.   In addition to his duties as head coach and athletic director, Schumacher served two terms as president of the NJCAA Basketball Coaches Association, a position voted upon by his colleagues. During his time with the association, he served as chair for the NJCAA Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame selection committee. As the president, he began the NJCAA Basketball Coaches All-Star Game, which is now played during the prestigious basketball coaching clinic held annually in Las Vegas. In recognition of his work, the Scott Schumacher Sportsmanship Award is given annually to an all-star participant. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches.   From 2005-09, Schumacher served on the USA Basketball Collegiate Selection Committee along with coaching legends such as University of Kansas head coach Bill Self, Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo, and former Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim.   Schumacher’s father is a former superintendent at nearby Waller ISD, where Schumacher’s mother also taught. Schumacher’s dad resides in Houston. Scott and his wife, Lisa, are the proud parents of three children: Ross, Lonna, and Alec.

Jermelle Fraser

Assistant Coach

Jermelle Speedy Fraser enters his second season as an assistant men's basketball coach at Blinn College. Prior to arriving at Blinn, the Bronx, N.Y., native served as an assistant coach at LeMoyne College in Syracuse, N.Y. Fraser assisted in recruiting and player development, along with game and practice planning. He helped develop freshman Christian Davis, who was selected to the NorthEast-10 Conference All-Rookie job Team. Fraser has coached and played in several countries internationally. He served as a head coach at the NBA Basketball School in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, in 2020. He helped develop grassroots and high school boys basketball players and ensured high-quality programming and training. Additionally, he evaluated players' skill level at the end of each term. Fraser spent the 2019-20 academic year as an assistant coach and player development coach at Montverde Academy in Monteverde, Florida. He coached and facilitated skills based trainings four NBA first-round draft picks: Cade Cunningham (No. 1 overall to the Detroit Pistons), Scottie Barnes (No. 4 to the Toronto Raptors), Moses Moody (No. 14 to the Golden State Warriors), and Dayron Sharpe (No. 29 to the Phoenix Suns, traded to Brooklyn Nets). He assisted with daily coaching and practice sessions for a team which featured eight high-major Division I prospects in total. He also provided video breakdown of practice and games for analysis. In 2019, Fraser served as a coach at the Zaza Pachulia Basketball Academy in Tblisi, Georgia. He was an academy coach for the U18 and U20 teams with both teams winning the Georgian Championships. Fraser also worked in player development with U16, U18, and U20 national team players along with Sandro Mamukelashvili, who was selected in the second round of the 2021 NBA Draft. In 2018, Fraser was a skills coach at the Hoop Group Skills Camp in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. Working with Hall of Fame coach Bob Hurley and eight-time National High School Coach of the Year Kevin Boyle, he assisted with in-game coaching and skill development. He also spent time at the NBA Basketball School in Kartepe, Turkey, as a skills coach. From 2011 to 2017, Fraser worked with Big Apple Sports under longtime New York City coach and scout Thomas "Tippy" McTernan. Fraser oversaw the player development program, helped coordinate the annual college exposure event, and scouted and evaluated talent. More than 300 players from his time with the organization went on to play at the collegiate level. Fraser began his coaching career as a graduate assistant coach at State University of New York Maritime College during the 2010-11 academic year. He assisted with skill development, scouting reports, and game day preparation and video. Fraser started his professional playing career with KB Drita in Gjilan, Kosovo, in 2013-14. He averaged 18.7 points and 4.5 assists per game. While with the team, Fraser worked with youth players in the program. He then played for BK Flames NH Ostrava in Ostrava, Czech Republic, in 2015-16. He played point guard and was a volunteer youth trainer. Fraser wrapped up his playing career with Malbas in Malmo, Sweden, in 2017-18. He ranked in the top 10 in assists in the Superettan League. As the head coach of the U16 and U19 teams, he led the teams to the 2017 Skanes District Championship and the 2018 Lundaspelen semifinals. Fraser attended SUNY Maritime College, where he was a 2011 graduate and received a bachelor's degree in International Trade and Transportation. On the court, Fraser led a remarkable resurgence at SUNY Maritime. In just three seasons, the Privateers more than doubled the win total from the five years combined before his arrival. The program averaged 15.7 wins per season, appeared in three consecutive Skyline Conference tournament semifinals and the ECAC Postseason Tournament in 2008-09 for the second time in college history. Additionally, the stretch is one of the most successful by winning percentage in school history.

Anthony Maxwell

Assistant Coach

Anthony Maxwell enters his third season as a member of the Blinn men's basketball coaching staff. Maxwell brings with him seven years of coaching experience, with his most recent stop being Eastern Oklahoma State College, where he served as an assistant coach for the 2022-23 season. While at Eastern Oklahoma State, Maxwell played a large roll in player development, recruiting, and managing the team's zone defense. Maxwell helped develop an All-Region 2 point guard in Arzhonte Dallas. He was also responsible for recruiting two Top-30 Oklahoma high school players. Maxwell’s zone defense while at Eastern Oklahoma was ranked in the 93rd percentile, only allowing 0.640 points per possession via Synergy compared to other zone defenses across the country.  As a graduate assistant at Detroit Mercy, Maxwell worked closely with Antoine Davis in his daily training regimen. Maxwell also had responsibilities in daily operations, assisting and directing summer workouts, managing the transfer portal, and creating each opponent’s player personnel film. During Maxwell’s time at Detroit Mercy, he helped the Titans earn their first winning record since the 2015-16 season as the team reached The Basketball Classic postseason tournament in 2021-22. Prior to his time in Detroit, Maxwell spent one year as the director of basketball operations at the University of Tennessee at Martin. While at UT-Martin, he also directed on-campus visits, academic success, and community involvement. From 2016-18, Maxwell was an assistant coach with the University of Texas-Permian Basin, helping the program record a pair of 26-win seasons while leading the nation in rebounding margin during the 2016-17 campaign. The Falcons also saw their first two NCAA appearances in school history and a run to the Sweet 16 in 2017-18.  Maxwell played college basketball at Centralia College before transferring to Central Washington University, where he finished his career. He was also a student assistant coach for Centralia College and helped that team to a 21-10 campaign in 2012-13, marking its best record since 1985. A native of Spanaway, Washington, Maxwell graduated from Central Washington with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in 2016, while acquiring his master’s in criminal justice, with an emphasis in intelligence analysis from Detroit Mercy in 2022.
