Bernie Empie

Head Coach

Empie enters his seventh year as the head mens and womens track & field coach at Bloomsburg University. He also serves as the head mens and womens cross country coach. In 2009, Empie took over the program and led the womens team to a 17th place finish at the NCAA Division II National Championships. Under Empies guidance, the Huskies have begun to rewrite the Bloomsburg University record books. Over the last two seasons, the Huskies have broken a total of 21 school records in track & field. In 2014, seven outdoor records were broken by multiple student athletes while Kate Dodds became the 2014 10K PSAC champion. In 2013, Vicki Davis had another big year for the huskies bringing home two PSAC titles in the 1500 meter and 3000 meter steeplechase while placing fifth in the 3000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA Division II Track and Field Championships. Just one year before, Empie coached Justin Shirk to a NCAA National Title in the javelin with a throw of 71.90 meters, helping him become the first mens track & field national champion in Bloomsburg University history. The 2011 track & field season was highlighted by Katie Meck, Katie Filemyr and the mens 4x400m relay. Meck eclipsed the 1500m (4:37.61), 3000m (9:56.67) and 5000m (16:53.72) school records in consecutive weekends. Mecks 5000m performance at the Penn Relays ranked her 23rd in Division II. Filemyr joined Meck on the National lists in the 3k Steeplechase. Filemyr broke the 3000m steeplechase school record in a time of 11:07.60, which ranked 24th in the country. The men's 4 x 400 relay team of Cal Rosenstein, Jessie Mustapha, Jared Arnold and Devin Barr finished 3rd at the 2011 PSAC Championships in 3:16.82 breaking a 34-year old mark of 3:19.6. The mark was one of the two oldest relay records at Bloomsburg in events that are still contested. Over the last five seasons in cross country, Empie has sent a total of 17 runners to the PSAC Championships, 16 to the Regional Championships, and four to the NCAA Championships. This past season, guided Vickie Davis to a 2014 PSAC Championship and Atlantic Regional Championship as well as a 22nd place finish in the NCAA Division II National Championships. Lauren Lehman earned 13th at the 2014 PSAC Championships and climbed at the Regional Championship to place ninth. As a team, the womens cross country team placed ninth in the 2013 NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Championships while the men finished 14th as a team. Empie guided mens standout Kyle Phillips to place 26th at this event. Phillips also placed 19th at the 2013 PSAC Cross Country Championships to help him earn All-PSAC honors. Prior to his arrival to Bloomsburg, Empie spent eight years as assistant coach at Colgate University. In seven of those seasons, he served as the assistant coach for women's cross country and track and field programs. Empie coached the Raiders' jumpers, sprinters, hurdlers, and multi-event athletes during the track season and assisted with the cross country team in the fall. Empie also served as the primary recruiting coordinator for the cross country and track and field programs. Under Empies guidance at Colgate, Lisa Germain won both the indoor and outdoor Patriot League long jump titles in 2006. He also mentored freshmen sprinter Curry Knox to the 100-meter dash title and school record at the 2006 Patriot League Championship. Knox also finished second in the 200-meter dash at the championship meet. The Colgate track and field program saw a rise in success since Empie returned to his hometown in August of 2000. His athletes produced 25 school records, 18 conference championships, 37 all-conference performances, 44 ECAC or IC4A qualifying marks, three All-East performances, two provisional NCAA qualifying marks, and six Junior National qualifying performances. Empie came to Colgate after serving as the assistant track and field and cross country coach at his alma mater, the Citadel, from 1994-98. Empie was responsible for recruiting, promotions and marketing, as well as assisting with on-field coaching for both the men's and women's teams. His primary duties included working with the cross country, middle and distance runners, however, he also assisted in coaching athletes competing in all other events. During his stint with the Bulldogs, Empie helped coach numerous all-conference athletes, five conference champions and two Junior National Qualifiers. Empie graduated from The Citadel with a bachelor's degree in physical education in 1994 and a master's degree in physical education in 1996. He and his wife, Andrea are the parents of two children, Connor and Gwendolyn.
