Gordy Presnell

Head Coach

Presnell returned to his home state to become the sixth head coach in Boise State Universitys womens basketball program history. He brought with him a mild and laid back demeanor, 18 years of head coaching experience and a long record of success. Presnell currently ranks first in Bronco history for victories by a coach with a record of 195-149 (.567) overall. The 2016-17 season will mark his 30th as a collegiate head coach with a career record of 591-276 (.682). Since his arrival in the spring of 2005 Presnell has turned the Broncos around and has them competing for conference championships. His teams have won two regular season titles in 2007 and 2008, as well as recording the programs first ever conference tournament titles in 2007 and 2015 to advance to the NCAA Tournament. In the first 11 years under his direction, the Broncos have recorded seven winning seasons and one at .500. After going 15-15 in his first year (2005-06) the Broncos recorded four consecutive-winning seasons, including a school-record 24 wins in both the 2006-07 (24-9) and 2007-08 (24-8) campaigns. Boise State currently has an active streak of three straight winning seasons with two national postseason appearances. Presnells teams have gone 96-84 in conference games and an impressive 117-49 (.705) at home in Boise, including a perfect 14-0 in 2007-08. Presnells teams have advanced to national postseason play four times and have recorded the only postseason victories in program history reaching the second round of both the 2008 Womens National Invitation Tournament and 2014 Womens Basketball Invitational. Over the course of his tenure Presnells Broncos have pushed the tempo of the game. His teams are routinely ranked among the top scoring and rebounding teams in the conference and have set numerous school records along the way. Presnell coached teams have set the school record for points in a season three times in 2006-07 (2,275), 2007-08 (2,330) and 2014-15 (2,331), in addition to recording six of the top 10 season totals all-time (46 years). In rebounding the Broncos have turned in the top six totals all-time and have set the record three times in 2005-06 (1,252), 2006-07 (1,330) and most recently 2007-08 (1,335). They have five of the top 10 scoring averages in program history including the fourth-best mark of 72.8 points per game in 2007-08 and the fifth-most at 70.6 in 2014-15. Presnells Broncos have six of the top 10 season marks for field goals made, seven of the top 10 in field goal attempts, eight of the top 10 in 3-point field goals made and the top 10 marks for 3-point field goal attempts. His 2015-16 team set the school record for free-throw percentage hitting .752; while his 2011-12 squad hit .742 and the 2012-13 .734 to round out the top three marks all-time. In 2007, Presnell led the team to new heights with a 24-9 overall record, they won the league regular-season crown and WAC Tournament title advancing to the NCAA Tournament, the programs first postseason national tournament since the 1998 WNIT. For his coaching performance he was named the WAC and WBCA Division I Regional Coach of the Year. Program honors during his tenure at Boise State include: winning back-to-back Western Athletic Conference regular-season crowns in 2007 and 2008; the 2007 WAC Tournament title; 2015 Mountain West Tournament title; two NCAA Tournament appearances in 2007 and 2015; advanced to the second round in both the 2008 Womens National Invitation Tournament and the 2014 Womens Basketball Invitational; one WBCA All-Region and one Honorable Mention All-American honors; 11 all-conference honors, one honorable mention all-conference honor, eight conference all-freshmen team members, two conference newcomers of the year, two freshman of the year, three conference all-defensive team honors, five conference all-tournament team honors with two tournament MVP, four CoSIDA Academic All-District and a combined 65 academic all-conference honors by 27 individuals. Prior to taking over at Boise State, Presnell coached for 18 successful years at Seattle Pacific University in Washington. At SPU, he inherited a program that had not recorded a winning season in the previous nine years. He built the Falcons into a NCAA Division II national power, accumulating an overall record of 396 victories with 127 defeats (.757). Along the way his teams amassed an average of 22 wins per season while claiming seven conference championships, including four in his last five seasons. In addition, his teams were an impressive 221-29 (.884) at home in Broughman Pavilion, including five unbeaten home seasons. On the national scene under Presnell, the Falcons advanced to nine-straight (1997-2005) and 10 of 11 NCAA Division II tournaments while he was in Seattle. Overall, Seattle Pacific made postseason appearances in 13 of his 18 years, 10 NCAA and three NAIA. Presnells teams reached three NCAA Division II Elite Eights and advanced to the 2005 national title game. At the time of his departure from Seattle Pacific in the summer of 2005, Presnell was ranked tied for 10th-place nationally among NCAA Division II coaches for win percentage (.757) and 21st for total victories. In 29 years as a collegiate head coach Presnell has experienced 25 winning seasons and one at .500. His teams have won a combined nine regular-season titles, seven at SPU and two at Boise State. In addition, he has guided 17 of his 28 squads into postseason national tournaments. During his career he has been named conference coach of the year eight times, WBCA Regional Coach of the Year five times (four at NCAA Division II level and one at Division I), and the WBCA NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year twice. His coach of the year honors now total 15 in 28 years. In 2007 during the NCAAs 25th anniversary celebration for womens sports, coach Presnell was listed as one of the top coaches all-time in their publication Womens Basketball Finest. His student-athletes have accumulated numerous honors along the way: one All-American; seven individuals have earned 10 honorable mention All-American awards; five league players of the year; 11 freshman/newcomers of the year; 33 players have combined for 52 all-conference honors; eight conference all-freshmen team members; three conference all-defensive team members; 41 individuals have combined for 105 academic all-conference honors; 14 combined for 16 national academic honors including two academic All-Americans. Presnell, a Lapwai, Idaho, native graduated from Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho, in 1983 with a B.A. in physical education. He continued his studies in physical education at Seattle Pacific University, where he earned a masters degree in 1989. He and his wife, former SPU gymnast Susan Nolte, live in Meridian, Idaho. They have two children, a daughter, Jacquelyn (25), and a son, Ryder (21). In 2008 he was honored by his alma mater Northwest Nazarene as the Outstanding Educator of the Year. While at Seattle Pacific he was asked to throw out the opening pitch at two Seattle Mariner games.

Sower (pronounced SO-wer) enters her 15th season as an assistant at Boise State University, her alma mater. She is now in her 22nd season as a collegiate coach. Sower is primarily responsible for the internal operations of the program and opponent scheduling. She is also heavily involved in practice sessions, conditioning and serves as the position coach for post players. As a member of the Boise State coaching staff she has helped guide the program to seven winning seasons, three 20-plus winning campaigns, two regular-season championships, two conference tournament titles and four postseason tournament berths, the 2007 NCAA, 2008 WNIT, 2014 WBI and 2015 NCAA. During her tenure the team has set school records for scoring and rebounding three times each, as well as recording the top-five rebounding marks all-time in the programs history. At Boise State, Sower has coached one player who earned both WBCA All-Region and honorable mention All-American honors, eight individuals who garnered a combined 10 postseason all-conference honors, one honorable mention all-conference, three conference newcomers of the year, two conference freshman of the year, three conference all-defensive team members, five players for a combined six conference all-tournament team honors including two MVPs, 11 who made conference all-freshmen teams, 35 Broncos that received a total of 80 academic all-conference honors and four individuals who garnered CoSIDA Academic All-District recognition. Sower spent seven years coaching in the NAIA and NCAA Division II ranks with the College of Idaho and Regis University (Colo.), respectively. Prior to Sowers arrival at Boise State she spent the 2001-02 season as an assistant coach at Regis. Sower helped guide the Rangers to their most successful campaign in program history as they finished with a 21-8 overall record and advanced to their first NCAA Division II Tournament in 2002. Sower began her coaching career as an assistant under Todd Corman at the College of Idaho in Caldwell, Idaho, when the school reinstated the womens basketball program for the 1995-96 season. She spent six seasons (1995-96 to 2000-01) with the Coyotes, helping guide the program to a top-10 national ranking and to the 2000 NAIA National Tournament Elite Eight, as well as, a runner-up finish at the 2001 NAIA National Tournament. While she was at the College of Idaho, the Coyotes received three NAIA National Tournament bids in six years and accumulated an overall record of 123-60. In the previous 21 years as a collegiate coach her teams have recorded 14 winning seasons and one that finished with a .500 mark. Her coaching accomplishments include working with one player who earned both WBCA All-Region and honorable mention All-American honors, 15 players who combined for 21 all-conference honors, three who earned all-defensive team recognition, two freshmen of the year, three newcomers of the year, 11 all-freshmen team honors and six players who made conference all-tournament teams with two MVPs. In addition, 40 individuals earned a combined total of 91 academic all-conference honors, while four have been named CoSIDA Academic All-District. Sower played four years of womens basketball at Boise State, earning All-Big Sky Conference honors as a senior. She was also named to the 1994 Big Sky All-Academic Team. Sower, who served as a captain, won team awards for best defense and hustle in her final season as a Bronco. Sower helped lead Boise State to a top-20 ranking and an appearance in the 1994 NCAA Tournament her senior year. Boise State captured the Big Sky Conference regular-season crown during Sowers sophomore and senior campaigns. Sower is a native of Spokane, Wash., where she attended Mead High School. She graduated from Boise State in 1995 with a bachelor of arts degree in psychology.
