Brad Burnham

Head Coach

Burnham was named the second coach in the history of Bowdoin swimming and diving in 2000. Previously at UCLA, Burnham has guided the Polar Bears to numerous outstanding seasons and several All-American honors in one of the most competitive conferences in Division III swimming. Burnham was involved in all aspects of running a Division I swim program while at UCLA. He assisted in technique development and race strategy while also overseeing daily workouts, overall season planning, budgeting and recruiting. During his six years at UCLA, Burnham helped the Bruins finish no worse than 16th place at the NCAA Division I Swimming & Diving Championships. During his time at UCLA, Burnham worked with over 40 All-Americans. Before joining UCLA, Burnham received his Master's in Exercise Physiology from Colorado State University. While earning his degree, Burnham also worked as a graduate assistant swim coach and a graduate teaching assistant in his field. During the summer, Burnham worked at the prestigious Stanford Swim Camp as a counselor and coach.  During his coaching career, Burnham has worked with two Olympic swimmers. While at Colorado State, he helped train Amy Van Dyken, who earned four gold medals at the 1996 games in Atlanta. At UCLA, he worked with Annette Salmeen, who also won a gold medal at Atlanta. Burnham graduated from the University of Maine in 1992 with a Bachelor's of Science in Physical Education and Health Fitness. A Dean's List student, Burnham was the captain of the Black Bears' swim team his senior year.

Allen Garner

Assistant Coach

Garner returns to Bowdoin after two years teaching and coaching at The Hotchkiss School in Connecticut. Throughout her career at Bowdoin Allen worked toward her goals in the pool and as a Classics major took advantage of every academic opportunity - she lived the offer of the college. As a senior captain in in 2012 Allen put it all together to qualify for the NCAA championships and set three school records.. Before Bowdoin Allen attended Germantown Friends School in Philadelphia where she contributed a great deal in the pool but maybe more through her leadership as a three year captain of the team. I am thrilled to be back in a program that taught me so much.  Brad's approach to training and racing greatly resonated with me as a swimmer and has largely influenced my own approach to coaching.  The programs emphasis on quality and efficiency creates a space for constant feedback and improvement, and lends itself to faster, and hopefully more enjoyable, swimming.  For the past two years, I had the opportunity to explore how coaching, teaching, and learning intersects.  I am incredibly excited and grateful now to be able to pursue this passion full-time under one of the best coaches I know.

Kelsey Willard

Coach

Willard begins her career as a diving coach this year following the retirement of Harvey Wheeler after 24 years with the college. In 2009 Coach Willard graduated from Bates College, finishing up her career at Bates College as an eight time NCAA All-American. Kelsey won NESCAC conference titles as a senior in 2009 in both the 1m and 3m events and still holds the school records at Bates for 1 meter and 3 meter boards. Kelsey grew up in Brunswick, Maine and started diving with Coach Wheeler in 2002 as a sophomore at Brunswick High School. Kelseys rapid improvement led to her state title in 2005 and a number of strong finished in the club diving arenas around New England. I believe that our foundations are what make us great.  We will focus on solid mechanics so that we can quickly improve your dive lists to be competitive.  We will work to build a solid foundation upon which you can hit big and miss small.
