Fran Smith
Head Coach
Smith came to Bridgewater College as the swimming program's first head coach and retired from the position in the spring of 2016. She will remain with the team as an assistant coach in 2016-17. Smith's teams compiled a winning percentage of .724 in dual meets, going 55-21 over nine seasons of competition. In 2015-16, the Eagles set 11 individual school records and four relay marks, while moving up one spot to fourth at the ODAC conference meet. In 2013-14, the Eagles snapped two school records on the final day of competition at the ODAC Championships in a fifth-place finish. The Eagles had two swimmers named to the All-ODAC teams, including the program's first three-time honoree - Carrie Crowther. Four seasons ago, Smith and the Eagles enjoyed arguably their best season in program history. The Eagles' third place finish and 412 team points marked Bridgewater's best finish in the conference championship meet since establishing the program in the 2007-08 season. For the program's efforts, Smith was named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Coach of the Year. In 2011-12, Smith's Eagles defeated Sweet Briar for the first time in program history and finished in fourth place at the conference championship meet. During her time with the program, Smith has coached 10 all-conference swimmers, including three-time second-team selection Crowther. Numerous swimmers have picked up third-team or honorable mention recognition. Smith has been involved with the area swim scene for the past 16 years. She coached a summer league team for nearly two decades and won five league championships. She became the first head coach of the Turner Ashby High School swim team in 2004. At Turner Ashby, she has had at least five swimmers qualify for the state championship meet in each of the past three years. In 2006, she coached the men's 50-yard freestyle state champion. Smith also was a teacher in the Rockingham Public Schools. Smith graduated from Turner Ashby High School in 1971 and then attended James Madison University where she graduated in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical and Health Education K-12.
