BJ McVay

Head Coach

McVay became the sixth head coach in Butler baseball history, stepping in to the role vacated when Steve Johnson accepted the head coach position at Fort Hays State. McVay enters his sixth season as Butler's head coach after two straight 30-win seasons. In 2015, Butler was 31-29, winning  a sub-regional series over Kansas City Kansas and reaching the Region VI Tournament in Wichita for the second straight season. That followed a successful 2014 campaign that saw the Grizzlies go 36-23 in Butler's best season under McVay. The Grizzlies hosted a first-round playoff series in which they swept Fort Scott in a best-of-three and qualified for the Region VI Tournament in Wichita. McVay coached his first All-American in 2014, as first baseman Evan Koehler was named to the NJCAA Division I All-American second team. Koehler led the Grizzlies in nearly every offensive category - including the team's triple crown: batting average (.409), home runs (12) and runs batted in (81). Koehler's 81 RBI was second in the nation. He also led the team in hits (85), doubles (24), on-base percentage (.484) and slugging (.707). In McVay's first season in 2011, he continued Butler's streak of seven straight seasons with at least 30 victories as Butler went 31-27 and won a first-round game in the Region VI playoffs.  He also coached four players who earned first-team or second-team All-Jayhawk West Conference honors. McVay has coached 14 All-Jayhawk Conference selections in his first four years, including three first-team honorees. Prior to becoming the head coach, McVay spent the previous six years as the primary hitting instructor for the Grizzlies as well as working with outfielders. During his time as an assistant coach, 12 position players signed with NCAA Division 1 schools and 13 players earned all-conference honors. McVay has helped guide Butler to at least 30 wins in each season with the team, including conference championships in 2005, 2007 and 2010 and a Region VI championship and NJCAA World Series berth in 2006. Prior to his tenure at Butler, McVay spent two seasons as an assistant at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. During that time the Savages compiled a record of 68-39 and went to the NCAA Division II Regional in 2003. Prior to that McVay served as an assistant one year at Barton County Community College were the team posted a 44-16 record. During his playing days he attended Barton County where he was an All-Conference performer his freshman season in the outfield. He then attended Southeastern Oklahoma State University where he was a part of the NCAA Division II National Championship team in 2000. Coach McVay, originally from Yukon, Okla., resides in Andover with his wife, Kelli, and son, Cash.
