Bill Mattingly

Assistant Coach

Mattingly was named men's and women's golf coach at Butler University in 2007. Since coming to Butler in 2007, Mattingly has helped the Butler golf programs win 31 tournaments, including four conference tournament titles. The women's golf program has won 22 events and has made three trips to the NCAA Regional. In 2012-13, Mattingly guided Butler's women's squad to a championship in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), the Bulldogs' only year in the conference. Butler earned a third consecutive trip to the NCAA Regional. The 2011-12 year, Butler's last as a member of the Horizon League, was one of BU's finest campaigns. The women's golf team won five tournaments, including three in a row during one stretch.The Butler women then advanced to the NCAA Regional for the second time in school history. BU's men's squad won two events and finished second in another. In 2010-11, Mattingly guided Butler's women's golf team to its first Horizon League championship and its first appearance in the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship.  He was named Horizon League Women's Golf Coach of the Year. Former Bulldog Michele Nash was twice named league player of the year and four times Mattingly has coached Butler's Most Outstanding Female Athlete. He most recently helped Jenna Peters earn BIG EAST Player of the Year honors after the completion of her senior season in 2014-15. Mattingly's student-athletes also thrive in the classroom. Thirteen Bulldogs have earned Golf Coaches Association of America All-Scholar recognition. The Butler men's golf squad had the department's highest team GPA in both semesters of the 2009-10 school year. Mattingly, a life member of the Indiana Professional Golfers Association, coached at local high school powerhouse Cathedral for 18 years. He guided Cathedral teams to 32 invitational titles and six state championship appearances. He was named Ball State Alumni Coach of the Year for both boys and girls golf in 2006. Mattingly, a varsity golf letterwinner at Ball State (1971-72), has been actively involved in golf in the Indianapolis area for more than three decades. He served as head professional at Thatcher Golf Course in Indianapolis from 1981 to 1984 and at South Grove Golf Course from 1985 to 1992. He was owner of Supreme Golf and Driving Range in Carmel from 1993 to 2003. An accomplished player, the Butler head coach won the Indiana Assistant's Championship in 1979, and he was Indiana PGA Champion in 1983. He's an eight-time qualifier for the National Club Professional Championship. Mattingly earned a B. S. degree in marketing from Ball State in 1976. Don Benbow

Benbow, who worked as an administrator in Butler's athletic department for 36 years, currently serves as an assistant coach for men's and women's golf.  Benbow's name is synonymous with Butler University. He played football at BU during the early 1960s, serving as team captain and leading the Bulldogs to a three-year 26-1 record. He was recipient of the Hilton Brown Award, was Butler's third Little All-American, an all-conference player and Indianapolis News MVP. Benbow, who was inducted into the Butler Athletics Hall of Fame in 1995, is a member of the Delaware County Hall of Fame and the Indiana Football Hall of Fame. His 36-year tenure in the Butler athletic department included 16 years as an assistant football coach.   Benbow graduated from Butler in 1963. Ben Weaver

Weaver, a former golfer and men's golf coach at Butler University, is in his eighth season at his alma mater. He was named Butler's head coach in September of 1998, before stepping down after the 2004 season to devote more time to his duties at Prestwick Country Club. Weaver is continuing with the Bulldogs as an assistant coach. Weaver guided the Bulldogs for six seasons. In 2002, he was named Horizon League Coach of the Year, and he guided Butler to a league runner-up finish in both 2003 and 2004. A PGA Member and Head Golf Professional at Prestwick Country Club on the westside of Indianapolis, Weaver was a member of Butler's Golf Team from 1995-97. He was the team's leading scorer, was named captain and was selected as the squad's Most Valuable Player in 1996-97, after earning the team's Mental Attitude Award in 1995-96. He posted four individual victories and 16 "Top 10" finishes in his short Butler career. Prior to enrolling at Butler, Weaver was a two-year member of the golf team at Vincennes University. He was a team co-captain and the Trailblazers' leading scorer in 1993-94. He also served as a volunteer assistant golf coach and then volunteer head golf coach at Vincennes in 1994-95, while completing his degree. Weaver, a former Greenwood (Ind.) High School stand-out, earned a B.S. degree from Butler in 1997 and an A.S. degree from Vincennes in 1995.
