John Hackney

Assistant Coach

Hackney became the California Baptist University men's and women's golf coach in the 2013-14 season. CBU golf made a big jump right away with Hackney, as his first year was also the Lancers' inaugural season as a fully-fledged NCAA Division II member. Overall, three of his four teams have qualified for the NCAA postseason since he took over the reins.  In 2014-15, CBU's women qualified for the Division II postseason as a group for the second year in a row and won its first conference title in the Pacific West Conference. It was the squad's third tournament victory of the year and eighth top-three finish. On the men's side, the Lancers produced an individual conference champion and tied for third in the PacWest after closing out the season on a hot streak. Both the men and women qualified for the postseason in 2013-14, with both squads reaching the Division II West Regional tournaments and the women sending an individual to the NCAA Championships, while Hackney was named the PacWest Co-Coach of the Year on the women's side. In 2013-14, the women posted seven top-three finishes out of nine tournaments and won four of its first five competitions. The team has four individual victories, as well. As a team, the men had three top-five finishes and also captured an individual tournament title in Hackney's first season. Hackney came to CBU after 16 years as the head mens coach and two seasons as the head womens coach at NCAA Division II Barton in Wilson, N.C. During his tenure at Barton, Hackney led the Bulldog men to 14 straight NCAA Tournament appearances, 45 total tournament wins and a ranking in the NCAA Division II Top 25 in 12 of the past 13 seasons. Over that span Barton has had 11 All-Americans, 11 scholar athletes and 32 individual tournament medalist honors. Hackney has been named Conference Coach of the Year five times and NCAA Regional Coach of the Year three times. The Bulldogs experienced arguably their most successful season to date in 2011, making the NCAA National Championship field after a third place finish at the regional tournament. Hackneys squad made a run into the match play quarterfinals, but eventually fell to top-ranked Lynn. Barton finished the year ranked No. 7 in Division II, one of seven seasons Hackneys teams have made it into the Top 10 nationally. Hackney started the womens golf program in 2011 as well, and this past season the young program produced its first all-conference player in sophomore Brittney Zine, who was Conference of the Carolinas Tournament runner-up. In addition to his head coaching duties as Barton, Hackney also served as the schools Sports Information Director for 17 years and was the head mens and womens cross country coach from 1997-2000. Prior to his time at Barton he had an extensive career as a sports journalist, working with several different media outlets following his graduation from North Carolina-Chapel Hill in 1984. Hackney graduated from UNC with a degree in Journalism. John Hackney became the California Baptist University men's and women's golf coach in the 2013-14 season.
