Derek Schmitt
Head Coach
Schmitt is set to begin his third season with California Baptist University men's volleyball and second as the program's head coach. He joined the Lancers in the summer of 2014, making the transition from the East Coast to the West Coast and bringing a wealth of volleyball knowledge with him. This past season, Schmitt guided the Lancers to their second-best season in the NCAA and as an MPSF member. They went 14-16, 6-16 in conference to finish one win shy of their first MPSF Tournament berth and two wins off tying the single-season record for wins in the MPSF era. Enrique de Diego Garcia earned All-MPSF and All-American honors for CBU, as well. In Schmitt's first season as an assistant at CBU, the Lancers produced an All-MPSF freshman, the first Off the Block National Freshman of the Week and put up a number of highlight individual and team performances that came close to or set program or conference records. Schmitt came to CBU after previously serving as head men's volleyball coach and assistant women's volleyball coach at Erskine College, from 2012-14. Under Schmitt's helm, the Flying Fleet amassed a 34-23 record and claimed Conference Carolinas 2014 regular season and tournament championships after going 21-7 in just the program's second season. Erskine produced one AVCA All-American honorable mention and eight all-conference players, including four first-teamers, in two seasons with Schmitt. All eight award winners were freshmen and sophomores, with the Flying Fleet also picking up consecutive Freshman of the Year honors in the conference. Prior to Erskine, Schmitt was the assistant volleyball coach at NCAA Division I Clemson (2010-11) and also served as the director of two summer volleyball camps totalling over 400 campers and about 45 camp coaches. Schmitt and his wife Monique just celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary in 2014 and have a daughter, Annika. Hein took over as the California Baptist University men's volleyball assistant coach in August of 2015, shortly after Derek Schmitt took over the head coaching responsibilities. In Hein, the Lancers have a wealth of collegiate, professional experience, having played for three different professional teams overseas. The 2006 Pepperdine graduate has also coached at several of the elite camps in the nation over the past six years, in addition to a seven-year run playing with the United States Men's Volleyball Team.
