Jarrod Olson

Head Coach

Olson was hired as the California Baptist University women's basketball coach on April 12, 2012 and turned the Lancers into a dominant force in NCAA Division II. This past year (2015-16), Olson was named the PacWest Coach of the Year after leading the Lancers to a near-perfect 19-1 conference mark for their second-ever PacWest Championship. The Lancers set two new program records, including best start to the season (7-0) and longest winning streak (21). CBU remained ranked in the top-six of the NCAA Division II poll all year and made its second-consecutive postseason appearance, losing a tight overtime battle to eventual runner-up Alaska Anchorage. Postseason accolades quickly started pouring in as Cassidy Mihalko, Kamille Diaz and Courtney Nelson were all named to the All-PacWest teams. Mihalko and Diaz went on to receive All-West Region recognition, with Mihalko picking up the program's first NCAA Division II All-American honors as well after finishing the regular season with the conference's best points per game average. In 2014-15, Olson spearheaded the Lancers to their most successful finish in NCAA Division II, grabbing CBU and the PacWest's first West Region championship and advancing to the championship game. The Lancers finished the year as the No. 2 team in the division with a 29-7 overall record.  CBU placed four Lancers on the All-PacWest team in Darsha Burnside, Nelson, Diaz and Mihalko. Diaz and Burnside went on to earn All-PacWest Tournament recognition and Burnside picked up All-West Region honors, along a spot on the Elite 8 All-Tournament team with Nelson. Burnside also became the first Lancer to be named an NCAA Division II Stat Champion after leading the division with 23 double-doubles. Off the court, Mihalko was named the PacWest Women's Basketball Scholar Athlete of the Year During the 2013-14 season, Olson led the Lancers to a 16-12 overall finish, standing 13-7 in the PacWest, after returning just one player from the 2012-13 season. CBU went on to compete for the PacWest Tournament title game, falling just short of the championship to Academy of Art.  Following the season, CBU placed three hoopsters on the all-conference team, highlighted by Diaz, who was named the Freshman of the Year. Over the course of the season, Diaz snagged six weekly freshman of the week honors, so it came as no surprise she was named the top freshman of the year. Mihalko and Erin Asher also joined Diaz on the All-PacWest teams. In his first year at the helm for CBU, Olson led the Lancers to the third conference title in program history and first for CBU as a member of the PacWest. Olson guided the Lancers to a 25-6 overall, 15-3 PacWest record as CBU marched to the conference crown by winning 11-straight games to close out the regular season. CBU had a 15-game winning streak overall that extended into the postseason and helped the Lancers to a runner-up finish at the NCCAA National Tournament. For his efforts Olson was named NCCAA West Region Coach of the Year. Olson came to CBU after six seasons as the head coach at NCAA Division II Florida Southern. He is the 10th coach in the Lancer program's 37-year history. With an extensive history of success at Florida Southern, Olson led the Moccasins to back-to-back Sunshine State Conference (SSC) regular-season titles and back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances, reaching the second round both times. In 2011, he also guided the Moccasins to their first SSC tournament title and NCAA tournament appearance since 2003. In six seasons at Florida Southern, Olson, the two-time SSC Coach of the Year, posted a 113-61 (.650) record. Throughout Olson's first five seasons, the program improved its win total each year, culminating in back-to-back 24-plus win seasons in 2011 and 2012. Prior to his time at FSC, Olson served as an assistant coach at NCAA Division I Creighton for four seasons. He helped guide the team to a 75-49 record that included a pair of 24-win seasons. In 2004, the Bluejays won the Women's National Invitation Tournament (NIT) and during Olson's tenure the team finished first or second in the Missouri Valley Conference three times. In the summer of 2005, he coached the Otago Breakers of the Women's National Basketball League in Dunedin, New Zealand, earning WNBL Coach of the Year honors. Prior to his time at Creighton, Olson built the program at College of Saint Mary in Omaha, Neb., helping the program to a 13-game improvement after he was hired in 2000. Olson's coaching career began at Emporia State where he was a graduate assistant in 1998. Emporia State was 33-1 and the NCAA Division II runner-up. Before taking the job at College of Saint Mary, Olson was an assistant men's basketball coach for one year at Millard South High School in Omaha and an assistant men's basketball coach at Bellevue University for one season. As a player, Olson was an NAIA All-American at Doane College in Crete, Neb., still ranking fifth on the school's all-time scoring list with 2,018 career points. He also played briefly with the Queens Graduates basketball club in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Olson married his wife, Amy, in 2003. She is a former college basketball player and served as an assistant coach with her husband for the Otago Breakers. The Olson's have two sons, Eamon and Moses, and a daughter, Felicity.
