Bill Baber

Associate Head Coach

Baber was named Head Softball Coach at CBU in the summer of 2011 and enters his sixth season at the helm for the Lancers, boasting a 210-61 overall head coach record at CBU. This past year, Baber led the Lancers to a third-consecutive NCAA Division II postseason run and finished the year with a 42-13 overall record. CBU saw its first NCAA All-American as London Miller picked up two honors, both NFCA and CCA. In 2015, the Lancers made their second-straight NCAA Division II postseason appearance, once again advancing to the West Region I final game. CBU finished the year with a 42-11 overall record and runner-up 25-6 conference mark. The Lancers were the only team to not only beat NCAA Division II champion runner-up Dixie State in conference, but hand the Red Storm their first of only two shutouts on the year. For the second year in a row, six Lancers were named to the All-PacWest team with Loie Kesterson being named the Newcomer of the Year. She, along with Kayla Hatch and Savannah Miller, went on to receive All-West Region honors. In 2014, Baber led his squad to a 46-13 overall record, 27-5 in the PacWest to grab the Lancers' second conference title and hold as high as a No. 2 ranking in the National Fastpitch Coaching Association (NFCA) poll. CBU went on to compete in its first-ever NCAA Division II tournament, making it all the way to the West Region I final game to finish the postseason run 3-2--the most wins any program made in CBU's first year eligible for NCAA postseason action. Six Lancers were named to the All-PacWest team, with a conference-high four first team honors: Krista Mann, Marshean August, Belinda Renne and Miller. The quartet went on to receive Daktronics, Inc. 2014 All-West Region recognition as all found a spot on the second team. On March 8, 2014, with an 8-6 defeat over Dixie State, Baber picked up his 100th career victory as a head coach. The century mark hit in just two-and-a-half seasons at the helm of CBU. During the 2013 season, Baber led the team to a 31-18 record, posting the program's 11th straight 30+ win season, keeping the streak of winning season's alive the Lancers have had going since 2001. Baber and his staff coached five All-PacWest players, including conference Freshman of the Year Jessica Avila, and two NCCAA All-Americans last season as well. In 2012, Baber took over the reigns of the program and did not skip a beat, leading CBU to a 49-6 record, a PacWest Championship and an NCCAA National Title. The Lancers went 26-4 in their first season in the NCAA Division II conference, winning their final 17 PacWest games to take the conference title after being picked to finish third in a preseason poll. Baber spent 12 total seasons, including eight as an assistant to former head coach Mike Smith. Together the duo compiled a 467-56 (.893) record, won eight straight GSAC titles, won the 2009 NAIA National Championship and posted 60-win seasons in each of the past four years. He has several years of experience coaching at the collegiate level, most of which he has spent in the Golden State Athletic Conference and while serving as the recruiting coordinator for the Lancers. In 2003, Baber took over the head coaching position at Biola after Smith left for UC Riverside. As the head coach at Biola, Baber directed the Eagles to a 25-27 overall record and sixth place in the GSAC with a mark of 12-16. In his four previous seasons as an assistant (1999-2002), Smith and Babers teams went 156-72, qualified for the Region II playoffs three times and won the regional title and advanced to the NAIA Softball World Series in 2002. He was also a volunteer assistant coach for Long Beach (Calif.) Wilson High Schools softball team in 1997 and 1998. Baber graduated from USC in 1990 with a degree in education. He and his wife, Christy, reside in Yorba Linda along with his daughter Sydney.
