Lisa Cooper

Head Coach

Cooper enters her 15th season at the helm of Cal State East Bay water polo in 2016-17. Cooper has led the Pioneers to the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) title game in each of the last three seasons, and her teams have finished at least .500 overall nine of the last 10 years. She has previously collected both the Division II and Collegiate III National Coach of the Year awards as well as WWPA Coach of the Year honors during her tenure. During her time with the Pioneers, Cooper has produced 32 All-Americans and 101 Academic All-Americans, as well as the 2014 Division II Player of the Year (Taylor Cross) and the 2008 Division III Player of the Year (Elise Wilehemsen). Her teams collected Academic All-American team recognition 13 out of the past 14 years including a program-record 14 individuals on the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-Academic Team in 2016. The Australia native collected ACWPC Division II Coach of the Year and WWPA Coach of the Year honors in her first season in Division II in 2010. Under Cooper in 2008, the Pioneers won their first-ever Collegiate III National Championship. The Pioneers (20-14) went 5-0 in the championships including a four-overtime victory over Cal Lutheran in the title match. The championship victory over Cal Lutheran was Coopers 100th win as coach of the Pioneer womens water polo team and garnered her Collegiate III National Coach of the Year honors. The 2008 Championship was the first national championship for the Cal State East Bay intercollegiate athletic program in 20 years. The Pioneers had five All-Americans in 2008, including goalkeeper Ellie Wilhelmsen, who was named Collegiate III National Player of the Year. Cooper currently serves as chair of the NCAA women's water polo committee and chair of the NCAA men's and women's rules subcommittee. Cooper also is the coaches chair of the WWPA. Coach Cooper's philosophy combines both academic and athletic excellence. She believes her athletes are students first and foremost, and sees water polo as an integral part of their overall college experience. Cooper believes that the overall development of her athletes is of the utmost importance, and this is taught through the life skills of teamwork, discipline, persistence, communication and dedication. A native of Perth, Australia, Cooper started playing water polo at the age of 14. She was a member of the Western Australian State Junior Team that won national championships in 1996 and 1998. Cooper also was a member of the Australian National Youth and National Junior Teams. Cooper played collegiately at Hawaii, where she was an All-American and Academic All-American, was the Rainbow Wahines top scholar athlete, leading goal scorer, and received the teams most outstanding player award. Cooper graduated from the University of Hawaii with a degree in Health and Exercise Science, and completed her Masters Degree in Sports Psychology at Cal State East Bay. Lisa resides in the city of Fremont with her husband, Eric, and their daughters, Summer and Autumn.

Dr Calvin Caplan

Assistant Coach

Caplan has spent over ten years overseeing the Cal State East Bay goalies. During his tenure, the Pioneers have produced two ACWPC All-Americans at goalie, captured the 2008 Collegiate III National Championship, and earned eight ACWPC Team Academic Awards. Under Caplan's tutelage in 2011, Jayme Pekarske collected both All-WWPA Honorable Mention honors and a WWPA All-Tournament Team nod. Caplan has coached the Pioneers four all-time saves leaders in Kim Johnson, Ellie Wilhelmsen, Lauren Merrill, and current assistant coach Jayme Pekarske. He helped Wilhelmsen collect 2008 Collegiate III National Championships MVP and All-Tournament Team honors. He is also a Professor Emeritus for the Kinesiology Department in the College of Education and Allied Studies.

Liz Warren

Assistant Coach

Warren enteras her second season with the Pioneer womens water polo coaching staff starting in 2015-16. Warren has been a coach at multiple levels since graduating from Cal State East Bay in 2011. Her stops include time as the head coach of the varsity girls team at Lincoln High School from 2012-13. She then went on to lead the 18 and under girls squad at Big Valley Water Polo Academy the following year. Most recently Warren spent time as an assistant coach at San Joaquin Delta College. Arriving at Cal State East Bay, she has brought with her former SJDC standout Victoria Dettloff to the 2015 squad. Warren was part of the 2008 Collegiate III National Championship team under current head coach Lisa Cooper. She was a two-time Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Honorable Mention and a recipient of multiple All-Academic awards. Warren is one of only three players in program history to score more than 200 goals, finishing with 241 at the conclusion of her 4-year career. She boasts two of the programs 10 highest single season scoring performances including a personal best 84 goals in 2009. The Stockton, Calif. native attended Bear Creek High School before moving to Hayward to become a Pioneer in 2007. In her spare time Warren enjoys playing water polo, attending sports events, and cheering on the Oakland Raiders.
