Alan Sue
Head Coach
Coaches Corner (10/5/20) Alan Sue was named head coach of the Pioneer men's and women's golf programs in 2005. Following the 2024-25 regular season, Sue was named CCAA Men's Golf Coach of the Year and Golf Pride Grips Division II West Region Men's Golf Coach of the Year. He led the Cal State East Bay men's golf team to its second CCAA Championship in 2025 to automatically qualify for the NCAA Division II West/South Central Regional. In the same year, the women's golf program at CSUEB placed third at the CCAA Championships and was awarded a fourth straight team berth in the NCAA Division II West Regional. Subsequently, both Pioneer golf teams followed with performances to earn spots in their respective NCAA Division II Golf Championships. His teams have won many tournament and individual championships at the NCAA Division II level, and Sue has coached four All-Americans, three Scholar All-Americans, and three recipients of the CCAA's Dr. Hal Charnofsky Award. The 2023-24 season saw both golf teams reach their respective NCAA Division II Regional tournaments. For Women's Golf, the program reached the NCAA Division II National Championships for a second straight season after tying for third at the NCAA Division II South Central/West Regional. Multiple postseason honors among both teams that season, most notably in men's golf, CCAA Freshman of the Year, Adam Brangefalt, and in women's golf, Julika Grosspietsch for All-CCAA First Team. In 2022-23, Sue led CSUEB women's golf to its first ever team appearance in the NCAA Division II Championships. In the championship tournament, the Pioneers advanced to match play after finishing eighth in stroke play. From the Pioneer team, Drishti Karumbaya was named to the WGCA All-American Second Team and Julika Grosspitesch was named WGCA All-America Honorable Mention. From the same team, Jasmin Krishna was named Academic All-America® Third Team. Also in 2022-23, two individual men's golfers, Xavier Coreno and Easton Hether, qualified for the NCAA Division II West/South Central Regional. On the way, Hether was named CCAA Men's Golf Freshman of the Year. In 2021-22, both Pioneer golf teams qualified for their respective NCAA Division II Regionals. Among the women's golfers, Drishti Karumbaya reached the NCAA Division II National Championships as an individual qualifier. In 2016-17, Sue helmed the Pioneer men's team to its first berth in the NCAA Division II Championships. Behind All-American and CCAA Player of the Year Adam Stone, the 2016-17 squad was runner-up at CCAA Championships and took third place at NCAA Regionals to earn a spot at the national championship tournament, where they finished 12th. In 2015-16, Sue guided the men's team to its first ever CCAA title, defeating Stanislaus State and Sonoma State in match play at the CCAA Championships in Napa, Calif. Junior Adam Stone captured the CCAA's individual championships crown, and junior Chad Hall was named CCAA Newcomer of the Year. Sue led the Pioneers to the NCAA Regionals for the fourth time in five years. In 2014-15, he coached the men's squad to a runner-up finish at the CCAA Championships and fifth place at the NCAA Regionals. Two of Sue's golfers, Adam Stone and A.J. Hebert, claimed All-CCAA and GCAA All-West Region honors. In 2013-14, he guided the Pioneer women to their best season ever. They won three tournament championships, boasted six individual medalists, and earned their first trip to the NCAA Division II West Super Regionals. Junior Linda Brown won the program's first-ever Regional Co-Championship. She earned a trip to the NCAA National Championships, where she took 23rd place and was named All-West Region. Sue guided the Pioneer men to back-to-back trips to the NCAA West Regional in 2011-12 and 2012-13, led by All-CCAAand All-West Region golfer Chris Herzog. The 2012-13 women's team was crowned champions of the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout, East Bay's home tournament. In 2008-09, East Bay's final season before moving up to NCAA Division II, one of Sue's individuals qualified for the NAIA National Championships. During the 2007-08 season, Sue led the Pioneer men's golf team to their first ever Cal Pac Conference Championship, a second place finish in the NAIA Regionals, and a seventh place showing in the NAIA Championships. Sue was selected as the Cal Pac Conference Coach of the Year. Sue guided the Pioneer women's golf team to a fourth place in the NAIA Region II Championships. The Pioneer women's golf team finished second out of four teams in the Cal State East Bay Invitational. In his first season as head coach, Sue led the Pioneers to a second place finish in the Cal Pac Conference Tournament and a sixth place showing in the NAIA Region II Championship. Prior to being named head coach, Sue served as the assistant golf coach at Cal State East Bay for four years and from 1998-2001 served as the assistant coach at Chabot College. Besides coaching, Sue was also a pro shop assistant at Monarch Bay Golf Club in San Leandro and was a merchandiser for the Oakhurst Country Club in Clayton. Sue was an exceptional golfer at UC Irvine where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in social science in 1998. He completed his master's in kinesiology with an emphasis in skill acquisition and sport psychology in 2005. Prior to that, Sue won the Northern California Junior College Championship as a freshman at Chabot College.

Mario Castellanos
Associate Head Coach
Castellanos enters his eighth year as an assistant coach for Cal State East Bay golf in 2016-17. Castellanos helped guide the CSUEB men's team to its first ever CCAA Championship in 2015-16. A student-athlete for Sue from 2005-09, Castellanos earned his bachelor's degree in business administration with a minor in international business in 2009. He is a native of Union City, Calif.

Chris Oetinger
Coach
Chris Oetinger rejoined the Cal State East Bay men's and women's golf programs during the 2021-22 season. Oetinger, a former Pioneer golfer, was voted CSUEB Male Athlete of the Year in 2012. Below are some accomplishments for the Pioneers since Oetinger's most recent arrival to both golf programs at CSUEB. In June 2023, Oetinger received the very distinctive honor of Golf Pride WGCA Assistant Coach of the Year for women's golf. Men’s Golf -NCAA Division II West/South Central Regional team appearance in 2022 and 2024. -Two individual golfers qualifying for 2023 NCAA Division II West/South Central Regional. -Two CCAA Freshman of the Year selections - 2023 (Easton Hether) and 2024 (Adam Brangefalt). -Two All-CCAA Honorable Mention selections and one All-CCAA selection. -Three GCAA Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-American Scholars. Women’s Golf -NCAA Division II West Regional appearances in 2022, 2023 and 2024. -2023 and 2024 NCAA Division II Championships team appearance. -One individual qualifier for the 2022 NCAA Division II Championships (Drishti Karumbaya). -One WGCA All-West Region selection and All-American Honorable Mention selection in 2022 (Drishti Karumbaya). -Seven All-CCAA selections in three seasons. -Multiple team and individual titles at regular season tournaments. Oetinger returned to East Bay after spending nearly four years as Head Men's and Women's Golf Coach and Admissions Liaison for Athletics at Holy Names University. Oetinger led the Hawks to 2021 NCAA Division II Men's West/South Central Regional. In 2019, Oetinger coached the HNU men's golf team to the 2019 PacWest Championship and earned a 2019 NCAA Regional Automatic Qualifier. During the 2018 season, Oetinger coached the men's golf program to a second place finish in the PacWest, a third place finish in the NCAA Division II West/South Central Regional championship as the HNU men's golf team became the first program at the university to advance to an NCAA Championship final event. Oetinger was named named HNU Coach of the Year for four consecutive years (2017-2020). He also earned 2018 GCAA DII West Region Coach of the Year and 2019 PacWest Coach of the Year. Oetinger coached 12 student-athletes that earned PacWest, West Region or All-American honors during his tenure. Prior to Holy Names, Oetinger spent nearly three seasons as Volunteer Coach at Cal State East Bay. During his first coaching term at East Bay, he focused on recruiting and player skill development. Oetinger was a member of the coaching staff of the 2016 CCAA Tournament Champions that finished sixth at the NCAA West Regionals as well as the 2015 CCAA Runner-Ups whom also placed sixth at the NCAA West Regionals that year. Prior to becoming at Volunteer Coach at CSUEB, Oetinger was a member of the Cal State East men's golf team. During his two seasons on the course as a Pioneer, Oetinger was named 2012 CSUEB Male Athlete of the Year, three-time CCAA Player of the Week, two-time (2012 & 2013) All-American Scholar Athlete, two-time CCAA Academic Award honoree (2012-2013), two-time Dr. Hal Charnofsky Award winner (2012 & 2013), an All-CCAA and All-West Region selection in 2013 and a 2013 West/Central All-Preview Team selection. After two years at Butte Community College, Oetinger graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Cal State East Bay in June of 2013.
