Carl Caughell
Associate Head Coach
Carl Caughell was hired as Sacramento State's assistant coach for jumps in November of 2018. “Our program is very privileged to land a quality coach in Carl Caughell,” Director of Track & Field Kenny McDaniel sad. “One of Carl’s greatest gifts is his capacity to teach technique in the vertical and horizontal events. He also has a natural ability to draw people to him which will be huge in recruiting for our program. Carl is a comprehensive coach who understands all the intricacies of the jumps and multi events. He will bring an extensive training system to our program which will enhance our student-athletes’ performances.” At Sacramento State 2025 Season Miles Grant earned second team All-America honors after tying for 16th at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the high jump. Grant became the first Hornet to advance to the meet in the high jump after tying for the top mark at the NCAA West First Round. He repeated as both the Big Sky Indoor and Outdoor champion in the event. Grant moved into second place and was just the second Hornet to clear seven feet indoors with a best of 7-02.50. His outdoor best of 7-01.50 is tied for third place in the school top 10. Tamia Ramos was also a Big Sky champion after winning the women's triple jump at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships. Ramos moved into ninth place in school history with a best of 40-09.75. She also moved into seventh in program history indoors with an identical distance. Ramos tied the school indoor record of 20-00.50 in the long jump. Audrey McElmurry finished in second place at the Big Sky Indoor and Outdoor Championships to earn all-Big Sky honors. McElmurry left Sacramento State ranked sixth indoors (40-11.50). Two Hornet women moved into the top 10 in school history in the high jump. Jessi Barry, who had never competed in the event prior to the season, tied for fourth place indoors after clearing 5-07.75 and Abby Sheets tied fro seventh at 5-07.25. During the outdoor season, Barry tied for fifth with a best of 5-08.75. Freshman Eli Kaltreider moved into a tie for eighth place in the men's indoor high jump in program history with a clearance of 6-08.75. Kaltreider finished third at the Big Sky Indoor Championships to earn all-Big Sky honors and was sixth outdoors. Kellan Quinley made an immediate impact in his first season. Quinley's best indoor triple jump of 48-11.50 ranks sixth in school history and he's fifth outdoors with a long of 50-04.75. Eliana Coburn finished third in the pentathlon at the Big Sky Indoor Championships and was fourth in heptathlon outdoors. Coburn set her PR and moved into third place in school history with 3,729 points in the pentathlon. She finished her career ranked sixth in the heptathlon with 5,068 points. Jack Charlton earned all-Big Sky accolades after finishing in third place at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships. Charlton set his career best with 6,470 points to move into ninth place in program history. 2024 Season Tamia Ramos earned all-Big Sky honors after placing second at the Big Sky Indoor Championships in the long jump. The Hornet women dominated the triple jump at the conference indoor meet, claiming four of the top nine marks. Alexia Croffet was named all-Big Sky after placing third with a best of 40-03.25 which tied her for 10th in school history. R’kai Davis was fourth, Jayla Flowers fifth and Audrey McElmurry ninth. Earlier in the year, Ramos had a triple jump of 40-03.25 which placed her in sole possession of 10th place until it was matched by Croffet. Mile Grant was the Big Sky Champion at the indoor meet after clearing 6-09.75 to match his PR. Mason Mitchell placed fourth in the long jump and John Gibbs finished in fifth place in the triple jump. Caughell also coached the team’s multi athletes and had Jack Charlton finish fourth and John Gibbs fifth in the heptathlon and Eliana Coburn place fifth in the pentathlon at the Big Sky Indoor Championships. Outdoors, Tamia Ramos moved into 10th place in school history with a triple jump of 19-03.50. Ramos went on to place sixth at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships where she was joined by fellow scorer R’kai Davis (t-7th). Once again, the Hornets had four of the top nine finishers in the women’s triple jump. Croffet was third, Ramos fifth, Davis sixth and McElmurry ninth. Croffet had wind-legal jump of 41-02.25 at the meet to move into sixth place in school history. Miles Grant defended his indoor title by winning the Big Sky Outdoor Championships and also qualified for the NCAA West Preliminary. Grant cleared 7-00.25 to win the Causeway Classic Dual and move into a tie for seventh in school history. He was the first Hornet to clear seven feet since 2011. John Gibbs advanced to the NCAA West Preliminary in the triple jump and also earned all-Big Sky honors after placing second. Gibbs set his PR at the conference meet with a best of 50-04.50 which ranks fifth all-time at Sacramento State. Mason Mtichell finished fourth at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships in the long jump and missed the school top 10 by a quarter inch. 2023 Season Coached Jayla Flowers to a Big Sky Indoor Championship in the women's triple jump and a third place finish in the event at the outdoor championships to earn all-Big Sky honors. Had four women in the finals of the outdoor triple jump. Helped Eliana Coburn to the title in the pentathlon at the Big Sky Indoor Championships. Coburn became the first Big Sky pentathlon winner in school history and moved into fifth place in school history in the event. Coburn returned in the spring to place second in the heptathlon at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships. Her point total set a career best and moved her into eighth place all-time at Sacramento State. John Gibbs cracked the top 10 in school history in the indoor and outdoor triple jumps. Gibbs finished fourth at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships and ranks 10th in the Hornet record book. Indoors, he owns the sixth-longest triple jump at Sacramento State. Izzi Leonard placed fourth at the Big Sky Indoor Championships in the high jump and tied for the seventh best clearance in school history. She also tied the 10th best mark at Sacramento State during the outdoor season. Mason Mitchell, who was a USTFCCCA All-Academic honoree, placed third at the Big Sky Indoor Championships in the long jump. His effort moved him into sixth place on the school top 10 list. Kasee Aczon finished fourth in the long jump at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships. Alexia Croffet was fourth at the Big Sky Indoor and Outdoor Championships in the triple jump. 2022 Season Alexia Croffet earned all-Big Sky honors in the triple jump after placing second at the conference outdoor meet. She was also fourt at the Big Sky Indoor Championships and moved into eighth place in school history in the event. Miles Grant finished fourth in the high jump at the Big Sky Indoor Championships and was tied for fourth all-time at Sacramento State. Grant was also a USTFCCCA All-Academic selection Eliana Coburn finished fifth in the heptathlon at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships. Her mark ranked ninth all-time in school history. Had five student-athletes in his event groups earn Big Sky all-academic honors. 2021 Season Team did not compete during the indoor season due to COVID-19. Alexia Croffet and John Gibbs each scored for the team in the triple jump at the outdoor championships. Croffet was sixth for the women while Gibbs was eighth in the men's competition. 2020 Season Coached Brittany Patterson to a victory in the triple jump and a second place finish in the long jump at the Big Sky Indoor Championships. Patterson posted the sixth best long jump (19-03.50) and the fourth-best triple jump (41-02.50) in school history. Andrew Fowler tied the fifth best indoor high jump in program indoor history after clearing 16-01.25. Fowler also scored 4,898 points in the heptathlon which placed him sixth in the Hornet record book. The outdoor season was canceled due to COVID-19. 2019 Season Helped coach the Hornet women to team titles at the Big Sky Indoor and Outdoor Championships. Led Brittany Patterson to individual titles in the triple jump and both conference meets. Patterson was also second in the long jump at the outdoor meet. Emilia Del Hoyo was third in the pentathlon and long jump at the Big Sky Indoor Championships. Andrew Fowler finished second in the pole vault at the conference indoor meet. Coached his athletes to 12 school top 10 marks. During the indoor season Shelby Dozier (5-07.25) and Jade Cany (5-07.00) moved into sixth and seventh in the women's high jump, Tessa Davis tied for 10th in the pole vault (11-08.00), and Del Hoyo set the school record in the pentathlon (3,815). The men were led by Ryan Tennant who long jumed 23-11.00 and triple jumped 48-06.00 which ranked ninth all-time at Sacramento State in both events, Jevin Kitchen who cleared 6-09.75 in the high jump which ranks fourth in program history and Andrew Stitch who scored 4,833 which ranked sixth in the heptathlon. During the outdoor season, Cany (5-08.50) and Dozier (5-08.00) ranked fith and tied for seventh, respectively, all time in the record book, Patterson moved into third in the long jump (20-00.50) and fourth in the triple jump (41-06.50), and Del Hoyo scored 5,062 points in the heptathlon to claim the sixth-highest total all-time by a Hornet. Adrienne Jackson cracked the top 10 for the men with an outdoor triple jump of 48-11.00 which placed him eighth in program history. Frederic Wagner V also moved into eighth at Sacramento State with 6,503 points in the decathlon. Prior to Sacramento State Nicholls State (2017-18) Served as an assistant coach at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, La., from Sept. 2017-Nov. 2018. With the Colonels, he was responsible for all recruiting in Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and Texas. He also oversaw home meet management and monitored the team’s academic progress. Northern Arizona (2015-17) Was a volunteer assistant coach where he worked closely with Kenny McDaniel who was the Lumberjacks’ sprints coach at the time. At NAU, he was part of the team which won the 2016 NCAA Div. I Men’s Cross Country Championship and also helped 11 student-athletes qualify for nationals. University of Mary (2013-15) Was a graduate assistant at the University of Mary in Bismarck, N.D.. Coached jumps, multis and hurdles and guided nine individuals to the NCAA Div. II National Championships. Athletic Accomplishments As a student-athlete at SUNY Fredonia, he was the SUNY Athletic Conference champion in the 110-hurdles in 2011 and a three-time all-league selection. Personal Eearned his bacehlor’s degree in adolescence education in 2012 and later added a master’s in curriculum, instruction and assessment from Mary in 2015. Also obtained his USTFCCCA strength & conditioning certification in 2017. Eric Fremd
Assistant Coach
Fremd joined the Sacramento State staff prior to the 2015-16 season. This year, he will coach the team's multi athletes as well as the horizontal jumps. Fremd came to Sacramento State after spending the two seasons as the head coach track & field coach at Yuba College. During his time at Yuba, the program saw its best seasons in over a decade. During the 2015 season the women's team won its first conference title in 15 years, by winning the Golden Valley Conference Championship, while the men's team had its highest placing in just as long by placing second. Yuba had 17 individual conference champions, qualified 18 athletes to the Nor-Cal Championships, had six athletes place in the top-five at Nor-Cal Finals, and five advance to the State Meet. Fremd was able to display his versatility while at Yuba by coaching the athletes he worked with directly to conference titles in the 200, 400, 110H, 400H, long jump, triple jump, pole vault, and 4x400. As well as, runner-up performances in the 100, 100H, 800, and 1500. He was also named the 2015 GVC Women's Coach of the Year. Prior to his time at Yuba, Fremd served as the horizontal jumps and assistant sprints/relays coach at Sacramento City College for 2 seasons. While at SCC, Fremd coached multiple All-Americans, conference champions, and SCC top-10 performers, highlighted by the school record 4x100m team that ran 39.88. Prior to SCC, Fremd spent one season as an assistant coach at Pomona-Pitzer College where he coached the sprinters and jumpers. Fremd is an alumnus of Sacramento State earning his masters of science degree in kinesiology (sports performance) in 2013. Prior to graduate school, Fremd earned his bachelors of science degree in kinesiology from Cal State Northridge, while competing for their back-to-back Big West Championship track & field teams ('09, '10). Fremd attended Sacramento City College, where he was a team captain for the 2007 State Championship Track & Field Team. Fremd also holds a USTFCCCA Jump Events Specialist certification and a USATF Level 2 Sprints/Hurdles/Relays certification. Fremd is married to his former CSUN teammate Crystal Fremd (formerly Spears).

Eric Dudley
Assistant Coach
Dudley came to Sacramento State from High Point University where he was the Associate Head Coach and led HPU student-athletes to 11 NCAA first round appearances, 11 individual conference championships, and 47 school records. Dudley oversaw the vaulters, high jumpers, throwers, and combined event athletes. Under Dudleys direction, the team's vaulters won both the mens and womens Big South pole vault titles in 2014 and 2015 setting a mens conference meet record at the 2015 indoor championships in the process. HPU jumpers also set school records in the mens and womens pole vault, womens high jump, mens decathlon and indoor heptathlon. In addition to being an accomplished jumps coach, Dudley is also a USTFCCCA Certified Throws Specialist. High Point throwers set school records in the javelin, shot put, discus, hammer, and weight throw under Dudleys direction. Dudley graduated summa cum laude in mechanical engineering with a minor in mathematics from the Honors College of Washington State in 2003. He also earned a master's degree in kinesiology with an emphasis in biomechanics and motor control from tIllinois. He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) since 2011. Dudley finished his own running career in the 400-meter hurdles at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials. Initially a recruited walk-on, he finished his collegiate career as a two time NCAA Div. I All-American and a two time Academic All-American. Dudley won the Pac-10 title in the 400-meter hurdles in 2001. He is married to Sacramento State assistant coach Amber Larsen, a former hurdler herself, and the two welcomed a daughter, Charlotte, in 2011. Kimberly Graham Miller
Assistant Coach
Graham-Miller was hired to the Sacramento State in September of 2014 and will assist with the Hornet sprinters. A decorated athlete while competing at Clemson, Graham-Miller was a three-time Atlantic Coast Conference Performer of the Year (1991-93), the only woman to win the honor three times. She was selected to the U.S. Olympic team in 1996 and won a gold medal in the 4x400 relay. Graham-Mller later won the 400 at the U.S. Outdoor Track & Field Championships in 1998. As a coach, Graham-Miller has had stops at Duke, Virginia, UC Davis and Illinois. While at Duke and UVa, she coached five All-Americans, three ACC champions and eight all-ACC athletes. At UC Davis, she coached four individual Big West Conference champions and helped the Aggie women win the conference title in 2012 and 2013. Graham-Miller also mentored seven NCAA participants, one honorable mention All-American and a USA Championship qualifier. Graham-Miller joins Stephanie Brown Trafton as the two gold medalists on the Hornet staff. Brown Trafton finished first in the discus at the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing.

Kenny McDaniel

Kenny McDaniel was hired as the Sacramento State Director of Track & Field/Cross Country on Oct. 1, 2018. One of the top sprints and hurdles coaches in the country, McDaniel’s career has taken him from the states of Texas to Kansas, California and Arizona. At Sacramento State 2025 Season Both the women and men finished in the top five at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships which were held at Hornet Stadium. Miles Grant became the first Sacramento State student-athlete to advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the high jump where he earned honorable mention All-America honors. Grant also repeated as the Big Sky champion in the high jump during the indoor and outdoor seasons. Sacramento State advanced three women and two men to the NCAA West First Round. Along with Grant, Ava Fitzgerald won the 100-hurdles and Tamia Ramos the triple jump at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships. The team earned 13 all-Big Sky honors during the outdoor season. At the Big Sky Indoor Championships, Zoe Ewell and Fitzgerald joined Grant as event champions. Ewell combined with Jessi Barry to finish 1-2 in the women's 60-meter dash. Sacramento State finished the meet with nine top-three finishes to earn all-Big Sky. The Hornet women set three school records during the indoor season: Ewell (60), Tristian Campbell (400), Fitzgerald (60H). The women had four outdoor school records: Fitzgerald (100H), Oliver (STPL), 4x100 and 4x400. Brandon Moreno set th school record in the indoor mile and the outdoor 1500. 2024 Season The Sacramento State women finished fifth at the Big Sky indoor and Outdoor Championships. The teams continued their dominance over UC Davis by sweeping the Causeway Classic Dual. Miles Grant was the Big Sky indoor and outdoor champion in the high jump. Jessi Barry (60), Alexia Croffet (triple jump) and Tamia Ramos (long jump) were named all-Big Sky during the indoor season. Grant (high jump), John Gibbs (triple jump) and Breija Stredic (400-hurdles) qualified for the NCAA West Preliminary. Grant and Gibbs were named all-Big Sky during the outdoor season. 2023 Season The women’s team placed fourth at the Big Sky Indoor Championships and were fifth at the outdoor meet. The Hornets swept the team titles against UC Davis in the Causeway Classic Dual. Eliana Coburn became the first woman in school history to win the pentathlon at the Big Sky Indoor Championships. Jayla Flowers finished in first place in the women’s triple jump. The pair led four women who earned all-Big Sky honors indoors. Miles Mitchell was named all-conference for the men during the indoor season. The 4x100 and 4x400 relays as well as five individuals earned all-Big Sky honors during the outdoor season. Ava Fitzgerald (110H), Alyssa Brewer (800) and Blaize Holland (men’s 100) advanced to the NCAA West Preliminary at Hornet Stadium. The women had five individual all-conference selections as well as the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Miles Grant (HJ) and John Maka (DIS) earned all-Big Sky honors outdoors. 2022 Season The Hornet women finished third at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships. The women’s and men’s teams each had easy victories over UC Davis in the Causeway Classic Dual. Evan Stork made his second career appearance at the NCAA West Preliminary in the hammer. He was joined at the meet by Cagnei Duncan (5K) and Shantel Nnaji (hammer). Stork also defended his Big Sky title in the hammer. Two women were named all-Big Sky during the indoor season, including LaTroucka Duke in the 60 and 200. Five women earned individual all-conference accolades as well as the 4x100 relay team during the outdoor season. Shantel Nnaji led the team list of all-conference honors, placing among the top three in the shot put, discus and hammer. Nnaji was one of five individual event honorees on top of the 4x100 relay team. Jabari Reynonds (200) and Stork represented the men on the all-conference team. 2021 Season Did not compete during the indoor season due to COVID-19. Hornet women had five student-athletes recognized as all-conference, including freshman LaTrouchka Duke who was second in the 100 and 200. The men were led by Evan Stork who finished first in the hammer with a school-record performance. 2020 Season Guided the women to a second place finish at the Big Sky Indoor Championships in Pocatello, Idaho. The team had eight all-conference honorees and the men had one. The team had three individual event winners comprised of Mikayla Revera (400), Brittany Patterson (TJ) and Morgan Jones (WT). The women's 4x400 relay also took the top spot. The outdoor season was canceled due to COVID-19. 2019 Season Was named the Big Sky Conference Indoor and Outdoor Women's Coach of the Year. The Hornet women won the 2019 Big Sky Indoor Championship. The team accounted for seven all-conference accolades, including Brittany Patterson who finished first in the triple jump. The team also captured the outdoor title and had 11 all-Big Sky honorees. Shilah Bedingfield was first in the 200 and 400, Brittany Patterson won the triple jump, Jelaia Jones finished first in the shot put and Shantel Nnaji had the top mark in the discus. The 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams were also the best in the conference. Bedingfield advanced to the NCAA Championships in the 200 where she was an honorable mention All-American. She placed eighth at the NCAA West Preliminary at Hornet Stadium behind a school-record time of 22.95. Prior to Sacramento State Ottawa University (2018) In his one year with the Spirit, McDaniel advanced five student-athletes to the NCCAA national championships, including Raiven Ellis who claimed the title in the women’s triple jump. Northern Arizona (2011-17) Coached student-athletes to 15 first-place finishes at the conference indoor and outdoor championships, including seven in 2017. Some of his notable accomplishments include guiding James Fisher to six consecutive Big Sky titles in the 200 as well as wins from the men’s indoor 4x400, women’s indoor and outdoor 4x400 and men’s 4x100 teams. Along with winning the Big Sky crown, the men’s 4x100 team advanced to the NCAA Championships after running 40.00 at the NCAA West Preliminary. The performance marked just the second time in Big Sky history a 4x100 team moved on to the NCAA Championships. Arizona State (2006-11) Coached the women’s sprints, hurdles and relays. Mentored 12 women to a combined 43 All-America honors, including Jacquelyn Johnson who won the pentathlon and heptathlon before competing at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Also coached Jasmine Chaney and Charonda Wiliams with the Sun Devils. Chaney earned a berth at the 2012 Olympic Trials in the 400-hurdles and later competed for Team USA at the IAAF World Championships. Williams set several school records and was a member of the US contingent at the IAFF World Championships in Berlin in the 100-hurdles. Cal State Fullerton (2004-06) Was the men’s and women’s sprints, hurdles and relays coach for the Titans. His athletes set 14 school records and he coached three men, three women and one women’s relay team to Big West titles. San Francisco State (2000-04) Coached student-athletes to three school records and 10 all-CCAA awards. He also had two Gator sprinters qualify for the NCAA Div. II Championships. Pittsburgh State (1999) Began at his alma mater Pittsburgh State as a student assistant in 1999. He earned all-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association honors in the 55-hurdles (indoor) as well as the 110- and 400-hurdles (outdoor). McDaniel earned his USATF Level II Sprints and Hurdles certification in the summer of 2006. Kenny and his wife, Realyn, have a son (Keero) and daughter (Kara).
