Steve Scott
Head Coach
Scott came to Cal State San Marcos in 1999, and has spent the last fourteen years distinguishing himself as a coach much the same way he did as a runner. As a collegiate runner at U.C. Irvine, Scott won the Division II 1,500-meter championship between 1975 and 1977. He won the 1,500-meter Olympic trials in 1980, but the U.S. team boycotted the games in Moscow. In 1981, he set the American record for the mile (3:48.68) and 1,500-meter (3:31.96). He bettered his mile record to 3:47.69 the following year, setting a mark that stood for over 25 years. Scott won the silver medal in the 1,500-meter at the IAAF World Outdoor Championships in 1983 and competed in the 1984 and 1988 Olympics. Over the course of his career, Scott was the national outdoor 1,500-meter champion six times. He has run the mile in under four minutes a world-record 136 times. Following his track career, Scott became an assistant coach at Azusa Pacific University in 1993. His leadership helped the team to a third place national finish in his first year. Since coming to Cal State San Marcos in 1999, Scott has achieved remarkable success. As the architect of the Universitys track & field and cross-country teams, Scott has built them from the ground-up over the last decade into perennial contenders in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). He has brought hundreds of CSUSM athletes to NAIA Nationals, coached 31 cross country All-Americans and 108 track and field All-Americans. He has been honored 10 times as the A.I.I. Cross Country Coach of the Year and three times as NAIA Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year.

Tracy Thompson
Assistant Coach
Thompson was named Assistant Track & Field Coach in July 2015. Thompson, a San Diego native, works with the Cougar jumpers in the high jump, long jump and triple jump. In his second season with the Cougars in 2016, Thompson worked with the jumpers and throwers. Thompson aided Frederik Jahr to an All-CCAA Track and Field honor in the high jump, the first student-athlete to achieve the distinction for CSUSM. Jahr also won two events and placed runner-up in two others. Thompson helped 11 student-athletes qualify for CCAA Championships and nine collect personal-bests. Thompson joined Scotts staff as a volunteer in 2015 and immediately had a positive impact on the jumpers. He helped eight student-athletes to personal lifetime bests, and guided Melissa Olmos to a new school record in the high jump and appearances in the Indoor and Outdoor NAIA National Championships. Prior to his work at CSUSM, Thompson coached for six seasons at University City High School in San Diego. He helped the Centurions to a CIF San Diego Division I championship in 2010 and mentored four student-athletes to individual CIF titles.

He graduated from SDSU in 1970 following a third place finish at the National Championships, ending his Aztec career as a two-time conference champion and two-time NCAA All-American. Williams continued his career professionally, ranking in the top-10 in the world in the 400-meter hurdles from 1969 through 1977.
