Jess Strom
Head Coach
Strom is in her fifth season as head coach and 10th overall as a member of the Cal U coaching staff. Strom has led the Vulcans to an 86-29 overall record as head coach, highlighted by the 2015 NCAA National Championship. She already ranks third in school history in career victories and has guided Cal U to an 8-1 record in two NCAA Tournament appearances, advancing to at least the Atlantic Regional Championship each time. During her near decade with the program, Cal U has made seven NCAA Tournament appearances and advanced to the Elite Eight three times. Last season, Cal U captured the second National Championship in program history and finished the year with a 32-4 overall record. Cal U claimed its first PSAC Championship since 2006 and earned the top seed and hosting rights for the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championship. The Vulcans closed the year on an 11-game winning streak and won 18 of their last 19 games, including two overtime victories in the NCAA Tournament. The Vulcans were also last years recipient of the Together We R Team Award, which honors programs that strive to succeed in the face of adversity, overcome extraordinary circumstances such as an unforeseen team crisis, barrier or unfortunate situation that cause extra stress. Cal U suffered the loss of senior Shanice Clark, who passed away at the age of 21 in January, before recording the third-winningest season in program history (18-2 after Clarks passing). In her first full season as head coach, Strom guided Cal U to a berth in the 2013 NCAA Tournament and a 22-9 overall record. The Vulcans entered the tournament as the seventh seed and recorded a pair of upset victories over nationally-ranked teams to advance to Atlantic Regional Championship, falling to the host and top seed by only three points. Strom led the Vulcans to a 14-7 record during her stint as the interim head coach during the 2011-12 campaign. Cal U finished the season with a 17-10 overall record, including a 14-8 mark in league play, and a 12th-consecutive appearance in the PSAC Tournament. A 2012 Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) Hall of Fame inductee, Strom previously served as an assistant under former Appalachian State head coach Darcie Vincent and later Heather Kearney, who was the associate head coach for the Mountaineers. While an assistant with the Vulcans, Strom helped lead the program to five-straight berths in the NCAA Tournament with Elite Eight appearances in 2008 and 2009. Strom previously mentored two-time WBCA All-American Brooque Williams, who finished her career as the schools all-time leading scorer. Williams, the 2009 PSAC West Athlete of the Year and a three-time All-PSAC West First-Team selection, also set the league record for career steals. While playing for the Lady Lions, Strom helped Penn State compile a 93-38 overall record with a 52-12 mark in Big Ten play and a pair of Big Ten regular-season titles. Strom was a three-time All-Big Ten selection and finished her Penn State career as one of only four players to register 1,000 points and 750 assists in a career. She also ranks among the programs all-time leaders with 310 steals and 191 three-pointers. Strom has coached at Penn States basketball camps and hosted private individual instruction opportunities since 2002. She also coached the 2005 Pittsburgh Rockers, an AAU team that participated in several national tournaments, and has been active in Special Olympics and Easter Seals programs. A native of Munhall, Pennsylvania, Strom was a two-sport standout while at Steel Valley High School. She finished her basketball career as one of the top scorers in WPIAL history with 2,840 points and was a two-time Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Fabulous 5 selection. Strom was also a standout soccer player, registering a WPIAL-record 205 goals in her career.

Jess Strom
Head Coach
The all-time winningest coach in program history, Jess Strom is in her 15th season as head coach and 20th overall as a member of the California (PA) coaching staff. Strom has led the Vulcans to a 297-99 overall record as head coach, highlighted by the 2015 NCAA National Championship. She has guided Cal to a 14-8 record in 10 NCAA Tournament appearances, advancing to at least the Atlantic Regional Championship four times. During her time with the program, Cal has made 15 NCAA Tournament appearances and advanced to the Elite Eight three times. In 2023, Strom guided Cal to its seventh PSAC Championship in program history and first in seven years. The Vulcans defeated the top seed from both divisions in the conference tournament while posting an eighth-consecutive, 20-win campaign. Cal featured the PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Year for the third time in five seasons and boasted a pair of All-PSAC West First-Team selections. Strom was voted the 2022 PSAC West Coach of the Year for the third time in her career. The Vulcans won the division for the first time in five years and advanced to the PSAC Championship for the first time since 2017. Cal finished the year with 25 victories behind the play of WBCA All-American Dejah Terrell, who was selected both the PSAC West Athlete of the Year and PSAC West Defensive Athlete for the Year in her first season with the program. The Vulcans posted a fifth-consecutive, 20-win campaign in the 2018-19 season and advanced to the Atlantic Regional Championship for the third time in five years. Forward Seairra Barrett was selected both the PSAC West Athlete of the Year and PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Year, plus was named a WBCA All-American. She scored the second-most points in single-season school history and finished among the top five all-time in school history in points, field goals, free-throws and rebounds. Cal recorded its second 30-win season in three years during the 2016-17 campaign despite battling numerous injuries late in the year. The Vulcans posted a 30-4 overall record behind a 20-2 mark in PSAC play to repeat as the divisional winner. Strom was named the WBCA Atlantic Region Coach of the Year for the first time after helping Cal advance to the finals of the PSAC Tournament and the Atlantic Regional Championship. Guard Miki Glenn repeated as a WBCA All-American and the PSAC West Athlete of the Year while becoming the only player in league history to finish a career with over 2,000 points, 500 assists and 300 steals. In the 2015-16 season, the Vulcans repeated as PSAC Champions despite returning just one starter from the previous year’s national title team. Cal won the PSAC West for the first time in seven years and eventually advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Strom was named PSAC West Coach of the Year for a consecutive season, as the program also featured the PSAC West Athlete of the Year in Glenn and the PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Year in Barrett. During the 2014-15 campaign, Cal captured the second National Championship in program history and finished the year with a 32-4 overall record. Daniel Caulfield
Head Coach
Daniel Caulfield, a two-time PSAC Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year, enters his 13th season as the head coach for the California (PA) track & field programs and begins his 20th season as head coach of the cross country programs. Caulfield has mentored a combined 24 NCAA All-Americans during his tenure with the Vulcans in cross country and track & field with All-America honorees in the 800m, 1500m, 1 mile, 3K, 5K, 10K and the steeplechase. Additionally, the programs have combined for 25 Academic All-Americans over the last 17 years, plus the only Academic All-American of the Year in school history. Caulfield has also coached three Cal student-athletes that were selected to compete at the USATF National Championships (Christopher Clark 3K-7:58; Aaron Dinzeo 10K-28:40; Julie Friend steeplechase-10:04). In recent years, Caulfield has led the women’s cross country program to unprecedented success while at the NCAA Division II level. The Vulcans earned a team qualifier for the NCAA National Championships three times in four years from 2015-18, highlighted by winning the 2015 regional title. Cal has been represented at the national race eight times since 2013 after featuring an individual qualifier five times, including in both 2022 and 2023. On the men’s side, the Vulcans have boasted an individual national qualifier twice in the last three years. The Vulcans have won 76 league titles in 19 different events in track & field at the PSAC Championships since Caulfield became head coach in 2014. Last spring, the women’s track & field team posted a top-five finish at the PSAC Outdoor Championships for the third time in five years. During the 2023 outdoor season, the men’s track & field team placed fourth at the league meet to match its best finish at the PSAC Championships since 2008. Caulfield has directly coached six separate athletes that have combined to break four all-time PSAC records and set two PSAC Championships records, plus receive PSAC Athlete of the Year and Outstanding Athlete and/or Outstanding Track Athlete of the league championships honors 19 times. Prior to Cal, Caulfield previously served as the head men’s and women’s track & field and cross country coach at Clarion. He started coaching at his alma mater Adams State in Alamosa, Colorado. As a coach, he helped the Grizzlies capture multiple National Championships, including a sweep of the men's and women's cross country titles in 1998 and 2003, before leaving Colorado in 2004. Caulfield was a 10-time All-American and a four-time National Champion during his college career while competing at both the NAIA and NCAA levels. He helped the Grizzlies capture the 1992 NAIA National Championship in indoor track & field before winning back-to-back NCAA National Championships in 1993 and 1994, plus set the indoor school record in the 800 meters. Caulfield was named to the inaugural RMAC All-Time Men’s Cross Country Team in 2009 before being inducted into the Adams State Athletic Hall of Fame in 2017. He was also inducted into the RMAC Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2022. A native of Ireland, Caulfield immigrated to the United States at the age of 13 and attended John F. Kennedy High School in the Bronx, a borough of New York City. At Adams State, he earned his bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology and returned to Adams State in 1998 to complete his master’s degree. Caulfield held the Irish indoor national record in the 800 meters for over a decade. He also ranked among the top 50 in the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World rankings. Caulfield was a European Cup champion in both the 800 and 1,500 meters and was the runner-up at the Millrose Games in Madison Square Garden twice. He and his wife Jackie, a former longtime assistant coach for the Vulcans, reside in California with their daughter, Ellie.

Noah Mitchell
Head Coach
The most prolific quarterback in school history, Noah Mitchell enters his first year as head flag football coach at California (PA) in 2025 Mitchell started all 43 games in his career from 2018-22 and set virtually every career passing record with the Vulcans. Following his collegiate playing career, he coached at the scholastic level before returning to Cal as a graduate assistant with the football program. As a player, Mitchell was tabbed the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Freshman of the Year in 2018 and later was selected the PSAC West Offensive Athlete of the Year following his junior campaign. He shattered the all-time school record with 10,788 passing yards while becoming one of only 10 quarterbacks in league history to eclipse 10,000 yards. Mitchell also finished his career with 88 touchdown passes, 897 completions, 1,489 attempts and 11,055 yards of total offense – all school records. Mitchell returned to Cal in 2024 as a graduate assistant and was responsible for the wide receivers. The Vulcans finished with nearly 3,000 receiving yards and over 20 touchdowns while advancing to the Super Region One Championship for the first time since 2016. Cal also appeared in the PSAC Championship before finishing the year No. 12 in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Top 25 poll. Mithcell helped mentor standout wide receivers Eric Willis III, who eclipsed 1,000 receiving yards and repeated as an All-PSAC West First-Team selection, and Omari Hopkins, who led the team with eight receiving touchdowns. In addition to his role as head flag football coach, Mitchell serves as assistant Athletic Operations Manager at Cal. Mitchell earned his bachelor's degree in communication studies from PennWest in 2022 and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in teaching education with a concentration in social studies.

Katie Tetzlaw
Associate Head Coach
Tetzlaw enters her third year as an assistant coach at Cal U. Since joining the program, Tetzlaw has helped the Vulcans capture their second NCAA National Championship and post a 72-22 overall record (.766). Cal U has appeared in the NCAA Tournament twice in the last three seasons and has advanced to at least the regional final both times. Last year, the Vulcans also earned their first PSAC Championship since 2006 and featured a pair of players who received WBCA All-America Honorable Mention. Tetzlaw previously served one season as an assistant coach at Slippery Rock following a two-year tenure as head coach at Keystone (Pa.), a NCAA Division III program. She also has served as an assistant coach at Bethany (W.Va.), Allegheny and Washington & Jefferson. A native of Pittsburgh, Tetzlaw gained experience in the PSAC and the NCAA Division II level as an assistant coach with Slippery Rock. She previously posted a 16-34 overall record as head coach at Keystone. In her second year with the Giants, Tetzlaw guided the program to five-straight victories to close the year and an 11-14 overall record, which nearly equaled the win total from the previous two seasons combined. Tetzlaw was a four-year player and three-year starter at Bethany under then-head coach Jina DeRubbo. During her career, she helped the Bison capture three Presidents Athletic Conference (PAC) titles and earned All-PAC Honorable Mention status as a senior. In the 2001-02 campaign, Tetzlaw started 10 games and helped the program tie the then-school record for wins in a season and record the programs first victory in the NCAA Tournament. She started a career high 25 games two years later, as the Bison broke the school record with a 23-5 overall record. Following her playing career, Tetzlaw served one season as a graduate assistant at Bethany before spending two years as an assistant coach at Allegheny. She helped lead the Gators to a combined 37-17 overall record with only eight combined losses in conference play. Tetzlaw then served three seasons as an assistant coach under DeRubbo at Washington & Jefferson. The Presidents reached the NCAA Tournament in each of her last two seasons after winning the ECAC South Region Championship in 2007-08. During her time at W&J, Tetzlaw worked with back-to-back PAC Player of the Year recipients in Emily Hays (2008-09) and Kennan Killeen (2009-10). A product of North Catholic, Tetzlaw earned her undergraduate degree in physical education from Bethany in 2004 and completed her masters degree in sport management from Cal U in 2009.

Katie Tetzlaw

With coaching experience at both the NCAA Division II and III levels, Katie Tetzlaw enters her 13th year as an assistant coach at California (PA) and was elevated to associate head coach in the summer of 2022. Since joining the program, Tetzlaw has helped the Vulcans capture their second NCAA National Championship and post a 261-83 overall record (.759). Cal has appeared in the NCAA Tournament in 10 of the last 12 seasons and has advanced to at least the regional final four times. The Vulcans have won three PSAC Championships (2015, 2016, 2023) after the program hadn’t claimed a league title in nearly a decade. Tetzlaw previously served one season as an assistant coach at Slippery Rock following a two-year tenure as head coach at Keystone (Pa.), a NCAA Division III program. She also has served as an assistant coach at Bethany (W.Va.), Allegheny and Washington & Jefferson.
