Head Coach

Clark's 24th season at the helm of the Carleton men's and women's swimming and diving programs. He's led the women's team to the 2000, 2001, and 2009 MIAC titles. On the men's side, he guided the Knights to 16 consecutive top-four finishes over the last 17 trips to the conference meet highlighted by third-place finishes in 2008, 2013, 2014, and 2015. In addition, the Carleton women placed in the top 10 at the 2002, 2003 and 2005 NCAA Division III Championships. His athletes at Carleton have earned All-America recognition 67 times with another 100 receiving All-America Honorable Mention. Additionally, Each of his 23 squads have been awarded academic team honors by the College Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) on both the men's and women's side. Clark has over 25 years of coaching experience at the USS and collegiate levels. From 1988-90, Clark coached the men's and women's swim teams at Whitman College (Wash.). After two successful seasons at Whitman, Clark pursued graduate work at the University of Oregon, where he continued to coach and teach swimming. In 1992, Clark worked as an assistant coach with the Stanford University men's swim team under the tutelage of Skip Kinney. Clark was involved with the training and coaching of several elite athletes including 1992 Barcelona Olympians Joe Hudepohl, Jeff Rouse and Pablo Morales. Following Stanford's 1993 NCAA Division I championship season, Clark accepted the head coaching position at Carleton. Clark returned to California for brief sabbaticals after the 1999-2000 and 2006-2007 seasons, coaching Stanford swimmers as they trained in Palo Alto, Calif., and Colorado Springs, Colo., in preparation for the Olympic Trials. He is a graduate of Whitman College (B.A., geology, 1986) and the University of Oregon (M.S., exercise science, 1992). In addition to his coaching duties at Carleton, Clark serves as an associate professor of physical education, athletics and recreation. Clark and his wife, Kathy, have two children.   Associate Head Coach Brooke Plotz Plotz, a 2000 graduate from Iowa State University and former team captain for the Cyclones, joined the Carleton coaching staff in 2005. She was named MIAC Coach-of-the-Year while acting as the interim head coach during Andy Clark's 2007-2008 sabbatical. A three-time All-Big 12 academic first-team honoree, Plotz served as head swimming and diving coach at Williamsburg (Iowa) High School. In addition to coaching at Iowa State for a season, Plotz also has club coaching experience. She and her husband, Jared, reside in Lakeville, Minn. with their son.   Assistant Coach Gunnar Teigen Gunnar Teigen will begin his third season as a member of the Knights coaching staff, having joined the program prior to the 2014-15 season. He also serves as the head coach of the Northfield Swim Club, a role he has held since 2013. Teigen was a four-year distance swimmer at Gustavus Adolphus College. After graduation in 2012, he took over as interim head coach of the River Falls (Wis.) Swim Club. He resides in Northfield, Minn.       Diving Coach Gabe Kortuem After a one-year hiatus, Kortuem re-joined the Knights for the 2015-16 season, his 12th overall working with the Knights divers. A 2002 graduate of St. Olaf, Kortuem was the national champion on the 1-meter board that year and established the NCAA Division III Championships 1-meter record with a score of 557.90. He has been voted MIAC Diving Coach of the year by his peers five times and has had numerous athletes qualify for the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving National Meet. He and his wife, Kristi, and their children reside in Northfield. Plotz served as head swimming and diving coach at Williamsburg (Iowa) High School. In addition to coaching at Iowa State for a season, Plotz also has club coaching experience. Teigen Gunnar Teigen will begin his third season as a member of the Knights coaching staff, having joined the program prior to the 2014-15 season.
