Eric Schmuhl
Head Coach
Schmuhl completed his fourth season as the Head Track and Field Coach of Case Western Reserve University in 2015-16. Schmuhl was named head coach prior to the start of the 2012-13 season. During the past two seasons, CWRU has compiled 34 All-UAA individual honors (20 women's/14 men's), including four UAA Champions. Schmuhls first two seasons at the helm of Spartan track & field were highlighted by a combined 12 school record-breaking performances (six womens/six mens) and a pair of NCAA All-America finishes for thrower Harry Weintraub. Prior to arriving at CWRU, Schmuhl spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Baldwin Wallace, where he was in charge of recruiting as well as coaching the jumpers and combined event athletes for the Yellow Jacket track & field program. He also served as the assistant coach for the BW cross country program and a co-advisor to Student Athlete Advisory Committee. In his four seasons, BW produced 45 NCAA qualifiers, 22 All-Americans and 23 school records. In both 2011 and 2012, the Yellow Jacket men and women finished runner-up during the Ohio Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, marking the highest co-ed finishes for the school since the mid-1990s. In addition to his coaching duties, Schmuhl also had the distinction of serving as meet co-director as BW hosted two NCAA Championships in the same year with cross country in the fall of 2009 and outdoor track & field in the spring of 2010. During both events, Schmuhl additionally served as facilities coordinator. Schmuhl, who earned an undergraduate degree at BW, returned to his alma mater as coach following a one-year stint as a graduate assistant at Muskingum University. In just one year in New Concord, he guided four OAC Champions, including one student-athlete that broke three school records and qualified for the NCAA Division III Indoor Championship. Prior to his time at Muskingum, Schmuhl served as an assistant for three years at his high school alma mater, Medina High School. While at Medina, Schmuhl coached the Bees to three straight conference and district titles as well as a regional championship in 2006. During his time, Schmuhl helped lead his student-athletes to 13 Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) Championship meet appearances, nine school records, four Medina County records and eight All-Ohio honors. As a collegiate student-athlete, Schmuhl was a seven-time All-OAC honoree with a 2004 conference title in the 400-meter hurdles and a pair of appearances at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championship in 2004 and 2005. He was also an Academic All-OAC selection and a three-time Vance Carter Award winner as the team's Most Outstanding Hurdler. Schmuhl has USATF Level II coaching certifications in jump events and combined events and is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association. He earned his bachelor's degree from BW in 2005 and a Master of Education from Muskingum in 2008. Schmuhl and his wife, Heather, reside in the Westpark neighborhood of Cleveland with their new-born daughter, Emma.

Warren Miller
Assistant Coach
Miller completed his third season at CWRU and first as defensive coordinator/linebackers coach in 2015. In his first season as the team's defensive coordinator, Miller's unit finished 15th among all NCAA Division III squads in rushing defense (100.2 yards per game), holding opponents to 22.4 points per game. Ten of his players earned All-PAC honors in 2015. Millers first two seasons with the program were spent as special teams coordinator/linebackers coach, and in 2013 his unit produced the UAA Special Teams Player of the Year. Before joining the staff in University Circle, Miller spent five seasons as linebackers coach at NCAA Division II Walsh University. He also served as an athletic academic advisor from 2010-12 as well as Director of Compliance and Eligibility from 2007-10. Prior to his time in North Canton, Miller served for three seasons (2005-07) in a defensive quality control position at the University of Minnesota. During his time on the staff, the Gophers appeared in a pair of bowl games. Miller also served as a graduate assistant and tight ends coach at Walsh from 2003-05 as well as a student assistant for offensive lineman and tight ends at his alma mater, Baldwin Wallace University, from 2001-03. Miller graduated from BW with a Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration. He and his wife Bryn live in University Heights with their three sons, Warren, William and Wade

Kathy Lanese
Coach
Lanese has coached a total of 12 NCAA All-Americans in cross country and track. She guided Esther Erb, 2008 NCAA Champion in the womens 10,000-meter run, and has led multiple distance runners and relay teams to school record-breaking performances. In addition, four of Laneses cross country runners have received NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships, and one was a finalist for the NCAA Woman of the Year award in addition to receiving the Fullbright Scholarship in Vienna, Australia. During her career, Lanese has earned a multitude of coach of the year awards. She has been tabbed Ohio Track and Cross Country Coaches Association Coach of the Year seven times (most recently in 2013), USTFCCCA Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year once (2006) and head of the UAA Womens Cross Country Coaching Staff of the Year twice (2006 and 2008). Under Laneses tutelage, CWRU cross country has also been represented at the NCAA Championship Meet in each season since 2006. That streak includes five consecutive qualifying years for the womens team from 2006-2010. During that stretch, the Spartan women finished in the top 10 twice, including 2007, when the team finished sixth in the nation the highest national finish for any Spartan athletic team in school history. In 2008, both the mens and womens squads ran at the NCAA Championship, marking the first time that the two competed concurrently at that meet. Lanese first came to CWRU in 1990 when she was named the head women's cross country coach and assistant track & field coach. She left the university briefly in 1993 to pursue a position in sports medicine, but she quickly returned to the coaching ranks as womens cross country and track & field head coach at Cleveland State University from 1994-96. Lanese moved on to serve in the same capacity at John Carroll University from 1996-2001. In addition to coaching, Lanese is a member of the Behavior Health Committee and Womens Leadership Council at the university level. She currently serves as President on a national level for the USTFCCCA for Division III Cross Country, and she has held the positions of President of the Ohio Track and Cross Country Coaches and Vice President of the USTFCCCA. Lanese, a 2010 graduate of the NCAA Womens Coaches Academy, also attended the USTFCCCA Women's Coaching Summit held in San Antonio, Texas in December of 2011. A graduate of Ohio University, Lanese was a scholarship athlete who competed in middle-distance and distance events. She was a member of a Bobcat track team that won two consecutive Mid-American Conference Championships (1983-84) and the All-Ohio Cross Country Championship in 1982. Individually, Lanese finished 11th and 14th, respectively, at the MAC Championship and was a member of the record-setting 3,200-meter relay and distance medley relay teams. During her senior year, Lanese was named captain of both the track and cross country teams. She was voted the team's most improved runner in 1985 and also set an indoor record in the 1,500-meter run. Lanese received her Bachelor of Science in Foods and Nutrition from Ohio University and both her certification in athletic training and her graduate studies in exercise science from Cleveland State. Lanese resides in Cleveland Heights and has two children, Evan and Kasey. Evan is a student at CWRU.
