Joe Fisher

Head Coach

Fisher, who is in his 38th year directing the Catholic University women's cross country and track and field teams, has guided the Cardinals to tremendous success throughout his tenure. Fisher earned Capital Athletic Conference Cross Country Coach of the Year honors four different times with the most recent coming in 2006, and last year, he received Coaching Staff of the Year accolades from the Landmark Conference at the indoor track championships. The 2011 cross country campaign saw CUA place second at the season-opening Albright Invitational, and then earn a third place finish at the conference championships.  Camelia Mayfield and Laura Kinley posted top-ten finishes to earn All-Conference honors, with Mayfield later going on to earn All-Region accolades. Fisher did some of his finest work during the 2012 indoor track season, guiding the Cardinals to an impressive third place finish at the conference championships.  For their efforts, Fisher and his staff received the Coaching Staff of the Year award.   At the outdoor championships, Kelly Carioto and Mayfield were named the Landmark Conference Field and Track Athletes of the Meet, respectively, with both student-athletes capturing two individual championships. In the classroom, 27 of Fisher's student-athletes were named to the Landmark Conference Academic Honor Roll.  Carioto received Academic All-American honors, and Carioto and Mayfield were named to the Academic All-District Teams.  The cross country team was also honored as an USTFCCCA All-Academic Squad. During the 2010 cross country season, Fisher directed CUA to a number of impressive performances, beginning in the fall when two of his student-athletes, Madeline Cronan and Mayfield, earned All-Landmark Conference cross country honors after posting top-12 finishes at the conference championship.  Cronan then went on to earn All-Region accolades with her 28th place finish.  Off the trail, the Cardinals were honored with 2010 Division III All-Academic status by the USTFCCCA after earning a cumulative GPA of 3.10 or better and scoring at the Regional Meet. The 2011 track season saw Fisher mentor Carioto to the Landmark Conference and ECAC indoor shot put championships.  It marked the first time in over a decade that CUA produced an ECAC champion.  Carioto also went on to receive Academic All-District accolades.  In addition, seven of Fishers's student-athletes were named to the All-Landmark Conference Teams, and on four occassions during the 2011 indoor and outdoor seasons Fisher had one of his student-athletes named a Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week. During the 2009 cross country season Fisher guided the Cardinals to a first place finish at the first-ever CUA Invitational, which was the first race Catholic University hosted in over a decade.  The Cardinals also won the Hood Invitational, behind a second place finish from Remy Ball 10.  Ball then went on to earn All-Region accolades following a top-35 finish at the NCAA Regional Meet.     Fisher made a positive impact on the CUA program right from the beginning.  He led the Cardinals to the Mason-Dixon Conference Cross Country Championship in 1979 and next went on to lead them to the 1982 and 1984 NCAA South/Southeast Regional Titles. Fishers 1982 team placed 11th at the NCAA Division III Championships. When CUA was a member of the Capital Athletic Conference Fisher coached three Runners of the Year as well as three Rookies of the Year. In track and field, Fisher coached the first CUA woman (Carolyn Hughes Brady) to be named an All-American (1981-82) and helped her become the only woman in school history to win a national championship (1982 NCAA 800-meter outdoor title). Fisher also coached track star Janet Muckenthaler, who was named 1998 NCAA Woman of the Year for the District of Columbia. Hughes Brady and Louise Mallet-Kelly, a member of the 1984 NCAA Regional Championship squad, are both members of the CUA Hall of Fame. Fisher enjoyed an outstanding running career at CUA as he was a member of two Mason-Dixon cross country championship teams (1973-74) and one indoor track title winning squad (1973). Fisher also ran a leg on a two-mile relay team that placed fifth at the 1973 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships. His outstanding performances earned him AAU (1973) and NCAA (1975) All-American honors. Fisher, who competed for the Cardinals under former men's track and field coach Jerry McGee, is a firm believer in the many benefits of athletic competition. Fisher graduated from CUA in 1975 with a degree in elementary education and later earned his master's degree in education from Morgan State University. An eighth grade social studies teacher in Howard County, Md., he is also the CEO and founder of First Generation College Bound, Inc., a company that has helped more than 750 students become the first people in their families to attend college. FGCB also hosts tutoring sessions and homework clubs for students of all ages. Thanks to Fisher's dedication, the organization has received hundreds of thousands of dollars in support from various civic groups in the D.C. area. Fisher and his wife, Pat, live in Laurel, Md., and have two children, Mya and Joseph P.

Kim Stengle

Assistant Coach

Stengle is in her fifth season as an assistant coach with the CUA womens cross country and women's and men's track and field programs.  A 2007 graduate of CUA, Stengle was a standout on the Cardinal track and field and womens soccer teams during her undergraduate days. Stengle helped Mary Clark '15 to three Landmark Field Athlete of the Year awards (indoor '14, outdoor '14 and outdoor '15). Clark also won the with throw twice and the hammer three times at the Landmark Championships. In 2015, Clark was selected as teh Landmark Senior Scholar-Athlete. The 2013-14 season saw both academic and athletic award for the Men's Track and Field team.  Four members were apart of the 2013 Landmark Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll and Michael Wood was selected for the Landmark All-Sportsmanship Team.  She helped to mentor Kelly Carioto to two of the best seasons at CUA in recent memory.  Carioto captured the 2011 Landmark Conference and ECAC indoor shot put championships, the 2012 outdoor conference shot put and discus titles, and was named a 2012 Academic All-American. On the men's side Stengle worked with 2012 All-Conference performer Pete Schramm, who placed second in the discus at the outdoor championships. Stengle also leads the Cardinals' recruiting efforts, helping to secure some of the largest and talented freshmen classes in the program's history. Arguably the greatest womens thrower in school annals, Stengle accumulated a plethora of honors during her time at CUA. She set the then-school record in the hammer and disc and still holds the top mark in the javelin. Stengle was a three-time conference champion in the javelin, a two-time champion in the hammer and weight throw and she also won the league title in the shot put once. A two time captain of the Cardinals track and field team (2006, 2007), Stengle was named the Mason-Dixon Conference Athlete of the Meet in 2005, the Capital Athletic Conference Track and Field Athlete of the Year in 2006 and the Mason-Dixon Field Athlete of the Year in 2007. In addition to her success in track and field, Stengle was a standout goalkeeper on the Cardinals womens soccer team.  As a junior she helped lead CUA to an 18-1-2 record as well as the CAC championship and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.  Stengle remains the school record holder for wins, wins in a season and goals against average and she was a 2006 First-Team All-CAC selection. Following her senior year of athletic competition, Stengle was awarded the Donley Cup by the CUA Athletics Department, which recognizes the outstanding senior woman athlete and scholar. Stengle graduated cum laude from Catholic University in 2007.   Following graduation she taught fourth grade in the Baltimore City Public School District for three years, while also coaching track and field and soccer at Goucher College. While at Goucher, Stengle helped lead one athlete to an All-Landmark selection in the hammer and shot put, and another athlete to the school record in the weight throw.  In addition, one of Stengles athletes received conference field athlete of the week honors, and in soccer she mentored a Second Team all-conference goalkeeper. Stengle earned her masters degree in social work from CUA in 2012.  She has also completed two half-marathons. Stengle and her husband Mitch reside in Gaithersburg.

Rahn holds over 20 years of coaching experience.  The Catholic XC/Track & Field programs continued a strong run of success in 2024-25, claiming a Landmark Conference crown and sending multiple runners to successful NCAA Championship appearances. Catholic eked out a Landmark Conference title in women's cross country in the fall, the second straight victory for Catholic, thanks to a title-winning performance from Kate Inglis. Inglis became the first Cardinal to win Landmark Performer of the Year honors, helping Catholic to a one-point victory in the race. Inglis wouid go on top compete at NCAA's for the second consecutive year, finishing 93rd with a time of 22:17.9. It was the first top-100 finish by a Catholic woman since 1991. Inglis was named the Landmark Conference's Senior Scholar-Athlete for her contributions on the course and in the classroom. On the men's cross country side, Conor Gross led Catholic to a fifth-place finish, earning All-Landmark Second Team honors as he finished the race in 10th with a time of 25:45.84. Gross would go on to finish 40th at South Regionals, earning USTFCCCA All-Academic honors.  During the winter, the Catholic women placed second at the Landmark Indoor Championships with three gold medals. Emily Moehringer won Catholic's lone individual championship with a win in the mile while the 4x200 and 4x400 relays claimed gold as well. Six Cardinals were named to the USTFCCCA All-South Region Team while Moehringer would qualify for NCAA's in the Mile, finishing 13th to pick up USTFCCCA Second Team All-America honors. The Cardinal men placed fourth at the Landmark Championships, bringing home the gold in the 4x200 relay. Five Cardinals would be named to the USTFCCCA All-South Region team. Christian Di Nicolantonio was named South Region Field Athlete of the Year after hitting the season's top mark (5.25 meters) before an injury knocked him out for the end of the season. Di Nicolantonio and Moehringer were named the Landmark's Senior Scholar-Athletes.  The outdoor season was a historic one for Catholic as three Cardinals combined to earn four All-American honors. On the women's side, Catholic took second at the Landmark Championships with individual gold medals brought home by Inglis and Brigid Byrnes. Seven Cardinals would be named USTFCCCA All-South Region athletes while Moehringer (800, 1500), Byrnes (400H), and Clare Marsh (400H) all qualified for the NCAA Championships. Moehringer would go on to earn First Team All-America honors in the 1,500 while grabbing a second-team nod in the 800. Byrnes would also add a second-team honor in the 400 hurdles.  The Catholic men would finish fourth at the Landmark Outdoor Championships with Jevontae Fearwell and Gabe Stypul earning gold medals in the 100 and pole vault respectively. Eight Cardinals would go on to earn USTFCCCA All-South Region honors while Fearwell qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 100. Fearwell would become the first men's track athlete since 1995 to earn All-America honors and the first-ever to do so in a sprint race. Fearwell placed fourth to earn first-team honors with a time of 10.46 seconds.  2023-24 was a banner year for Rahn and the entire cross country/track & field program. Kicking off the fall with a bang, the women's cross country team captured the Landmark Conference Championship for just the second time in program history. Catholic's score of 41 was its lowest in program championship history, bettering the 2012 total of 63 points. Inglis and Apolline Gaspers finished second and third to earn All-Landmark First Team honors and pace the Cardinals to victory.  Despite being picked fifth in the pre-championship poll, the Cardinal men ran to a third-place finish thanks to a monster performance from Ian Hopkins, who finished third in his first race of the season. Joe Wolfe posted his second consecutive 11th-place finish for the Cardinals at the meet.  After a pair of strong efforts at the NCAA South Regional Championships, Hopkins and Inglis qualified to run at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Newville, Pa. Inglis became the eighth woman to compete and first since 2021 while Hopkins made it three straight years for a Cardinal male to compete.  The success continued into the winter as Catholic picked up a pair of second-place finishes at the Landmark Indoor Championships, including the best-ever finish for the women. Catholic pushed Susquehanna to the very end, finishing just seven points shy of the River Hawks on the women's side. Inglis was named Landmark Indoor Track Athlete of the Year with wins in the 3,000 and 5,000 while Rahn and co. were named Landmark Coaching Staff of the Year.  As for the men, Fearwell and Jordyn Walker took home major awards as the Cardinals edged out Moravian to finish second behind the River Hawks. Di Nicolantonio and Moehringer would go on to compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships, both earning All-America honors as Di Nicolantonio finished 3rd and Moehringer finished 13th in their respective events.  In the spring, Catholic would go on to win its first-ever track & field championship as the women's outdoor team braved the elements to hold off Moravian and Susquehanna. Byrnes earned Rookie of the Year honors while Rahn and his staff once again earned Coach of the Year honors. Four Cardinals would go on to compete at NCAA Outdoor Championships: Di Nicolantonio, Moehringer, Marsh, and Lauren Cerda.  All four athletes would earn All-America honors as Di Nicolantonio became the first national champion in more than 30 years for the program. CDN won the pole vault with a 5.19-meter vault, a program and conference record, becoming the first individual champion at Catholic since Tom Caffrey in 1991. Cerda (10th), Marsh (12th), and Moehringer (14th) all earned Second Team All-America nods.  Rahn was named USTFCCCA South Region Coach of the Year for the outdoor campaign.  Rahn has elevated both the men's and women's indoor track and field teams to new levels heights during his time at Catholic. In 2022, both teams achieved their highest-ever rankings at the time. The men's team reached No. 42 in the USTFCCCA Men's Indoor Track & Field National Rating Index, which was believed to be the highest national ranking in program history. The women's team earned a regional ranking of No. 5, their highest ever. The men were ranked No. 4 in the South region along with their national recognition. In 2021, Rahn coached both John O'Rourke and Paige Wilderotter to qualification to the NCAA Cross Country Championships. O'Rourke broke the school record in the cross country 8,000-kilometer run. Both O'Rourke and Wilderotter were named Academic All-Americans.  The men's cross country team finished 3rd at Landmark Conference Championships, the highest finish in school history. The men were ranked within the top 10 of the USTFCCCA Regional rankings throughout the entirety of the 2021 season, after having never been ranked before that season. Both the men's and women's teams finished in the top 10 at the Regional Championships. During the 2021 track and field season, Rahn coached women's track athlete Ellie Bixenman to Rookie of the Year honors in the Landmark Conference. The sprinter had an impressive freshman campaign breaking school records in both the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash, and was named Landark Conference Athlete of the Week twice. Walker broke the school record in the triple jump and was named an Academic All-American. Charissa Keller broke the school record in the pole value while Liz Caufield broke the school record in the triple jump. Catholic had 14 total athletes honored as All-Landmark selections across the men's and women's teams in 2021.
