Dave Gonyea
Head Coach
Coach Gonyea enters his 31st season as head coach with an impressive 576-269 record over the last twenty nine seasons. He was named 1996-97 New England Coach of the Year, 1998-99 and 2000-01 NSCAA Athletic Director of the Year, 2002 USCAA Athletic Director of the Year, and 1998-99, 1999-00, 2000-01, 2001-02, & 2002-03 MSCC Coach of the Year, as well as the 2007-08, 2013-14, 2015-16, Yankee Conference Coach of the Year. In 2015, Gonyea was inducted into the USCAA Hall of Fame. As CM's basketball coach, he won his 500th game in 2018. Under Gonyea’ s leadership, the Mustangs have won nine league championships, three New England championships, and participated in 12 NSCAA/USCAA national championship tournaments. CM captured the gold in 2002, winning the prestigious USCAA national championship. In 2013-14, he led his mustangs to an undefeated Yankee Conference record (18-0), a Yankee Conference Championship, and a trip to the USCAA National Tournament held in Uniontown, Pennsylvania. He also achieved the rare distinction of earning his 500th win in 2019. He finished the 2019-20 year at 18-10. His 2017-18 squad finished the year at 19-6. He has been fortunate enough to coach 20 All-Americans and numerous all conference players. Citizenship, respect, pride and family are the core values that drive Coach Gonyea and program expectations encompass these fundamental principles. “The basketball court is simply an extension of outside life and lessons learned within the game and relationships developed are focus in our program. Our expectation is our players will work hard in the classroom, the court, and challenge themselves to exit their comfort zone to meet new people, learn new behaviors and grow into prepared young men to meet the challenges of society.” Coach Gonyea resides on the college campus and also holds the title of Director of Athletics.

Gonyea and program expectations encompass these fundamental principles. The basketball court is simply an extension of outside life and lessons learned within the game and relationships developed are focus in our program. Our expectation is our players will work hard in the classroom, the court, and challenge themselves to exit their comfort zone to meet new people, learn new behaviors and grow into prepared young men to meet the challenges of society. Michael Mercuri
Assistant Coach
Michael Mercuri joined CMCC as an assistant coach with the men's basketball program ahead of the 2025-26 season. The Hudson, MA native spent almost two decades coaching in Massachusetts before joining the Mustangs. Mercuri most recently was an assistant coach at Shrewsbury High School for three seasons, with previous stops at Nashoba Regional High School, Hudson, Littleton, and Hudson Catholic High School, his alma mater. Mercuri has five years total of head coach experience while at Hudson and Nashoba, where his team won the league championship in 2021. Outside of high school basketball, Mercuri has spent 15 years coaching on the AAU circuit with the CMAC Hawks, Team New England, and Worcester Basketball Club. He has also been heavily involved with running youth camps and clinics. He holds a degree in Marketing and Sport Management from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Away from the court, Mercuri has been a licensed property and casualty insurance advisor for 20 years. *updated June 23, 2025

Corey David
Assistant Coach
Corey David enters his 3rd year as a Men's Basketball Assistant Coach in 2024-25. A Mustangs alum, David graduated from CMCC in 2022 and was a member of the men's basketball team for five seasons.

Jared Rubin
Assistant Coach
Coach Rubin is in his second year on the coaching staff. His duties include coaching the college JV team. He is in charge of player development at that level and assists guiding future Mustangs. In the day world, Coach Rubin is in his third year as the resident director at CM. He enjoys good releationships with the players and works tirelessly with coordinating additional classroom help when needed.

Zavier Roman
Coach
Zavier Roman begins his first year as a Men's Basketball Assistant Coach at CMCC in 2025-26. Roman returns to Central Maine having played three seasons for the Mustangs from 2015-18. The Belfast High School product was part of the last men's basketball team to reach the USCAA national tournament in 2016, when CMCC finished the year 22-10. He appeared in 80 games over his three campaigns, ending his career with 136 points and 95 rebounds. The combo guard/forward helped the program to a 61-27 overall record in that span. Roman was named a USCAA Academic All-American in 2018. Since graduating from CMCC with a degree in Criminal Justice, he has worked six years in law enforcement and is currently the School Resource Officer at nearby Lewiston High School. Roman has also stayed active in basketball, coaching training camps for youth groups in Waldo County.
