Jack Barton
Head Coach
Barton was named the head coach of the Chicago State University mens and womens tennis programs in January 2010. A pair of Cougars earned all-conference honors in 2014, the Cougars first year in the Western Athletic Conference. Kirsa Utech compiled 16 wins including nine victories at No. 1 singles. She picked up All-WAC First Team accolades for her play. On the mens side, Sergiu won 13 matches and earned an All-WAC Second Team selection. Bartons efforts in 2011-12 were rewarded with the Great West Conference Womens Tennis Coach of the Year Award. His Cougars finished third in the GWC for the second time in three seasons thanks to a 4-3 victory over Texas-Pan America at the 2012 GWC Championships. Juan Rosalina Tejoprayitno garnered All-GWC First Team honors while her sister Juan Rosalia Tejoprayitno picked up second team accolades. Juan Rosalia Tejoprayitno was also an All-GWC Second Team selection in 2010 when she and first team honoree Golda Rubina helped the Cougars to a third place finish in the GWC after a 4-0 shutout of NJIT. The pair guided the Cougars to a 10-5 record in 2009-10. Bartons squads are no stranger to success in the classroom also. Barton's women's squad won the ITA All-Academic Team Award in 2012-13 for the second consecutive season. The honor recognizes teams with a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or better. In June of 2013 his women earned the highest team academic honor the NCAA bestows. He picked up the NCAA's Public Recognition Award for a perfect multi-year Academic Progress Rate score. It was Barton's men's squad also earned the ITA All-Academic Team honor in 2012-13. The Chicago native returned home to take over the CSU position after spending several years as the Director of the Rising Stars of Kentucky Tennis, which is a member of the United States Tennis Associations (USTA) National Tennis Junior League (NJTL) that was founded by the late tennis great Arthur Ashe. The program, located in Louisville, Ky., is committed towards mentoring and teaching youth within the community. In 2007, Barton guided the Rising Stars to a pair of USTA Kentucky Junior Team Tennis state titles in 14-and-under and 18-and-under categories in addition to a third-place finish with the 14-and-under team at the USTA Southern Section Junior Team Tennis Tournament. For their efforts, the Rising Stars were honored with the USTA National NJTL award and Barton received the 2007 UTSA Kentucky Volunteer of the Year award. He also led both Rising Stars squads to gain runner-up finishes at the 2009 USTA Kentucky Junior Team Tennis State Tournament. Barton also served on the Board of Directors for USTA Kentucky and as a member of the USTAs Southern Section NJTL Committee. Before starting his coaching career, Barton was a four-year letterwinner and a starter for both singles and doubles on the mens tennis team at St. Augustines College in Raleigh, N.C. He helped the Falcons place second in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) during his first three seasons, and graduated with a B.S. degree in computer science in 1992. Barton also lettered in tennis for four years at Bloom Township High School in Chicago Heights, Ill. Barton is a certified PTR professional and currently resides in Matteson, Ill.
