John Harvell

Head Coach

Among the nation's elite active coaches in Division III, head coach John Harvell enters his 25th season at the helm of Christopher Newport baseball in 2025. With 12 NCAA Tournament appearances, seven conference championships and three Division III College World Series appearances, he has elevated the CNU program to one of the top programs in the nation. Early in the 2019 campaign, which would be one of the most memorable seasons in NCAA Division III history, Harvell became the fourth Christopher Newport head coach in any sport to eclipse 500 career wins. He now owns an overall record of 590-290-3 for a winning percentage of 67.0%, ranking in the Top 30 among active head coaches at Division III. In conference play, with 13 seasons in the USA South Athletic Conference and six in CNU's current home, the Captains are 215-102 for a winning mark of 67.8%.  The 2019 season was memorable for more than just the wins, though, as the Captains shattered program records time and time again. Harvell guided the Captains to the team's first Capital Athletic Conference Championship and the 10th NCAA Tournament appearance in program history. Led by a historically great offense that logged over 500 runs for the first time, the Captains averaged 11.7 runs per game and ranked among the top-five marks in Division III history. The Captains led the nation in home runs per game, slugging percentage, and runs per game. He coached three All-Americans and nine All-Region selections on the 2019 squad that won 35 games for the fifth time in program history. Heading into the postseason, Christopher Newport collected the No. 1 national ranking for the second time in program history. He was named the CAC Coach of the Year for the second time and collected his fifth career plaque. Picking up his first career Capital Athletic Conference Coach of the Year recognition in 2018, Harvell and the Captains had a resurgent year and finished among the nation's top programs again. CNU climbed to as high as No. 5 in the nation after winning 18 straight games, the second longest win streak in program history, and registered the fourth 35-win season. The Captains reached the NCAA South Regional Championship and finished the year 35-12 led by junior conference player of the year and first team All-American Seth Woodard The 2018 season marked the Captains ninth NCAA Tournament appearance, all under Harvell, and the first since 2012. In 2012, the head coach notched his third trip to the College World Series when he guided the Captains to a 34-10 season. In 2011, CNU posted a 39-7 season which featured a school-record 26-game winning streak, and his sixth trip to the NCAA Tournament. It was also the first time CNU Baseball was ranked No. 1 in the nation. Following the 2013 season, Harvell added to his coaching resume when Christopher Newport nabbed its first ever Major League Baseball draft pick when it was announced the Houston Astros selected USA South and South Region Pitcher of the Year Austin Chrismon. The team missed the postseason that season, but still accomplished plenty, with 29 wins, three All-Americans and five All-Region selections. Senior Ryan Fleischmann also broke the USA South career saves record during the year, and finished his tenure ranked fourth in NCAA Division III history with 29.  Harvell's tenure at CNU got off to a fast start. In 2001, in his first season at the helm, he led a program that had never finished higher than third in its conference (and that in a year when the league had only four teams) and won the school's first baseball championship. The win put CNU baseball in NCAA post-season play for the first time in its history.  In year two, Harvell and the Captains repeated the conference title and went even further - much further - all the way to the #3 final ranking in the nation. Harvell's impact on the program continued its steady rise when he took his third CNU team even higher. In 2003, he led the Captains all the way to national championship day at the NCAA Division III World Series, where they finished #2 in the country. In three remarkable years, CNU went from conference also-ran to national power. The American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) honored Harvell with its South Region Coach of the Year award for his efforts during the 2002 season and gave him the same award in 2003. He earned his third career Region Coach of the Year honor following the 2011 season, and is also a five-time Conference Coach of the Year (2001, 2008, 2012, 2018, 2019). Here are just some of the amazing accomplishments of Christopher Newport baseball in the last 22 years under the leadership of John Harvell: -In 2001, the Captains rose from a fifth place tie in the Dixie Conference to tie for the league's regular season title, and then won the conference tournament championship for the first time. That vaulted CNU into NCAA play for the first time ever. -After a 5-7 start in 2002, the Captains raced to a then-school record 38 wins and finished third at the NCAA Division III World Series. That came after winning the NCAA Regional Championship, obviously for the first time ever. -In 2003, the Captains swept through the Regional unbeaten in four games, and then won their first four at the World Series. -In 2011, Harvell's Captains set a new program record by winning 26-straight games. -Christopher Newport achieved its first-ever national #1 ranking during the 2011 season -For his efforts Harvell has been named Conference Coach of the Year five times. -Guided one of the top offenses in Division III history in 2019, shattering school and conference records along the way. The Captains hit 75 home runs, scored 525 runs, and hit .340 as a team while winning the 800th game in program history during the season -Compiled a career record of 590-293-3 for a winning percentage of .670, that ranks among the nation's top 50 all-time at Division III John graduated from Christopher Newport, and became well-known to Captains fans as both a baseball and basketball player. He played three baseball seasons and two years of basketball after transferring from Howard University, where he played baseball and was a kicker on the football team. His last two years playing baseball were the Captains first two 20-victory seasons. In basketball, he played for the first Christopher Newport team to reach the NCAA "Sweet 16" in 1990-91.  Harvell began his coaching career by starting the baseball program from scratch at nearby Woodside High School in Newport News. In his four years at the brand new school, he compiled a record of 62-25, reached the state Group AAA regionals three times and advanced to the final four in 1998. He was named state high school Coach of the Year that season. John's son Brandon played baseball at Division I Longwood University. He and his wife Emily were married at Captains Park in 2019.

Bill Broderick

Head Coach

Entering his 14th year and 13th season in 2025-26, Bill Broderick has led the Christopher Newport women's basketball program on an historic run during his tenure. His squads have compiled an overall record of 308-47 for a winning percentage of 86.8 percent. Since taking the helm in 2012, Broderick has established himself as one of the top coaches in Division III women's basketball. He has cemented his status as the winningest coach in program history and ranks in the top ten across all three NCAA divisions with an 84.7 career winning percentage. During the 2024-25 season, he reached 300 career wins in the second fewest games in NCAA Division III history (346).  A three-time Region Coach of the Year (2017, 2022, 2023) has also been named the Conference Coach of the Year five times. He has led CNU Women's Basketball into the NCAA Tournament in 11 of his first 12 seasons and reached at least the Round of 16 in nine of those postseason trips.  The 2022-23 season stands apart in Broderick's career as a benchmark year for the CNU women's basketball team as the Captains earned the No. 1 national ranking for the first time in program history and carried it through an undefeated season all the way to the NCAA Division III National Championship Game. CNU fell to Transylvania, 57-52, in the programs first ever title game appearance to capture a National Runner-Up finish with a program-record 31-1 overall record.  Broderick coached the team through a record-breaking campaign that included the most points in program history, three-pointers, and assists in a single season. Despite facing adversity that included losing three starters to injury, Broderick guided the Captains to their third Final Four appearance behind All-Americans Anaya Simmons and Sondra Fan.  For his efforts, Broderick was named the D3hoops.com National Co-Coach of the Year, sharing the honor with Transylvania's Juli Fulks, and showcased some of his best work by sporting a spotless overall record heading into the national championship game. CNU led the nation in scoring margin and ranked in the top-25 in both scoring offense and defense.  Among other accomplishments, Broderick helped lead the Captains to a record-breaking 43-game winning streak that ranks in the top-ten all-time in Division III women's hoops after posting a 26-1 overall record. In conference games during his tenure, Broderick's winning percentage is equally remarkable as the Captains have posted a 110-20 conference mark and an 84.6 percent winning clip. He is the all-time leader in winning percentage both overall and in conference play in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference.  But perhaps most impressively, Broderick's postseason numbers are staggering. In 11 of his first 12 seasons, he has led the squad to NCAA Tournament runs, including the national runner-up finish in 2023, a Final Four effort in 2017, an Elite Eight appearance during the 2013 tournament, and Sweet 16 finishes in 2014, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2022. After taking over at CNU, Broderick guided the Captains in a stellar debut performance as he helped the squad reach the Elite Eight for just the second time ever in 2012-13. During the team’s run to the NCAA Tournament, Christopher Newport won the USA South Conference Tournament Championship, shared the regular season title, and eventually finished at 29-3 overall.  Picking up right where he left off, Broderick followed up his impressive debut season with an outstanding 2013-14 campaign as well. Over the course of the season, Broderick’s squad ripped off a 14-game winning streak and beat a pair of top-20 opponents. During the regular season, CNU took down No. 8 York, 67-64, during an overtime thriller at the Freeman Center before toppling No. 16 Ferrum, 75-66, on the road during the second round of the NCAA Tournament.  Leading Christopher Newport back to the Sweet 16 for the second straight year, Broderick became one of just seven coaches in NCAA history to guide a program to the Sweet 16 in each of their first two seasons with the team.  Broderick's squad then posted another historic campaign in 2016-17, when CNU put together one of the finest seasons in program history. Climbing to as high as No. 5 in the national rankings during the regular season, CNU finished the year ranked 4th after appearing in the NCAA National Semifinals. The Captains were 29-3 overall with a 16-2 record in conference play en route to conference regular season and tournament titles. Along the way, the team would post the second longest win streak in program history at the time with a 19-0 start to the year. In the postseason, CNU downed a pair of top ten teams before suffering the loss to undefeated national champion Amherst College in the Final Four. Ahead of the 2017-18 season, the Captains hauled in the program’s highest ever national ranking at the time at No. 2 in the D3hoops.com Preseason Poll. With another 25-win campaign and run to the NCAA Sweet 16, Broderick rounded out another successful season and finished the year ranked No. 13 nationally. CNU featured one of the most dominant defenses in the nation, leading the country in steals with 534 thefts, ranking second all-time at CNU. The team outscored opponents by an average of 21.1 points per game -- the highest scoring margin in CNU lore.  That defense carried over into the 2018-19 campaign, where Christopher Newport again impressed with a young roster buoyed by 10 incoming freshmen. The Captains ranked second nationally in steals and sixth in turnovers forced. The Captains' senior class became the first unit in program history to reach the NCAA Tournament all four years of their tenure as Christopher Newport closed the year ranked No. 21 in the nation following another Sweet 16 appearance.  The suffocating defense has been a trademark of the Broderick coaching tenure at Christopher Newport as the Captains have ranked in the top five nationally in steals and turnovers forced in each of the past eight seasons. His "Captains Chaos" pressure has registered six of the top ten single season efforts at CNU in steals over the last eight years.  Prior to becoming the eighth women’s basketball coach in the history of the CNU program, Broderick compiled an extensive resume on the sidelines, including stints as an assistant coach at Division I programs University of Pittsburgh and University of Arizona.  Broderick came to Christopher Newport from Bucknell, where he served as Assistant Coach for two seasons, including a stint as the Interim Head Coach at the end of the 2011-12 campaign. Prior to his time with the Bison, Broderick was the Recruiting Coordinator and Assistant Coach under CNU alumna Karen Barefoot at Elon. He recruited back-to-back Southern Conference Freshman of the Year and coordinated the number one ranked recruiting class in the conference in 2009-10. Broderick’s 32-year coaching resume includes experience at nearly every level of competition, including 11 years as an NCAA Division I assistant coach. He served as an assistant at the University of Arizona from 1995-98, winning the 1996 WNIT Championship and reaching the NCAA Sweet 16 in 1998. He was also Associate Head Coach at the University of Pittsburgh where he assisted in the biggest turnaround in program history.  Along with his time at the collegiate level, Broderick was head coach at George Mason High School (now Meridian High School) in Falls Church, Virginia, guiding his team to the State Semifinals and earning Region Coach of the Year honors in 2007-08.  The Vienna, Va. native graduated Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in Health and Physical Education in 1993 from Frostburg State University where he continued on to earn a Master of Education in Health and Physical Education in 1995.  Broderick and his wife Jennifer have two children, Cole and Laney, and reside in Yorktown.    Getting To Know Head Coach Bill Broderick   Name Bill Broderick Education Bachelor's: Frostburg State (1993) Master's of Education: Frostburg State (1995) Head Coaching Career Potomac State College, 1994 (Interim) Bucknell University, 2012 (Interim) Christopher Newport, 2012-present Record at CNU 2012-13: 29-3 2013-14: 24-6 2014-15: 17-9 2015-16: 24-5 2016-17: 29-3 2017-18: 25-5 2018-19: 25-6 2019-20: 25-4 2020-21: No Record 2021-22: 26-1 2022-23: 31-1 2023-24: 27-2 2024-25: 26-2 Total: 308-47 (.868), 12 seasons Overall Coaching Record 311-57 (.845), 13 seasons Conference Championships 2012-13: USA South Tournament Championship 2012-13: USA South Regular Season Champs 2016-17: Capital Athletic Conference Regular Season Champs 2016-17: Capital Athletic Conference Tournament Championship 2018-19: Capital Athletic Conference Regular Season Champs 2018-19: Capital Athletic Conference Tournament Championship 2019-20: Capital Athletic Conference Regular Season Champs 2019-20: Capital Athletic Conference Tournament Championship 2021-22: Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Regular Season Champs 2021-22: Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Championship 2022-23: Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Regular Season Champs 2022-23: Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Championship 2023-24: Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Championship 2024-25: Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Championship NCAA Tournament Appearances 2012-13: Elite Eight 2013-14: Sweet 16 2015-16: Sweet 16 2016-17: Final Four 2017-18: Sweet 16 2018-19: Sweet 16 2019-20: Sweet 16 2021-22: Sweet 16 2022-23: NCAA National Runner-Up 2023-24: NCAA Second Round 2024-25: NCAA First Round Contact Coach Broderick 757-594-7103, [email protected] Personal Wife: Jennifer Son: Cole Daughter: Laney

Justin Chezem

Head Coach

A staple on the sidelines of Christopher Newport men's soccer for two decades, Justin Chezem was named the seventh head coach in the history of the program ahead of the 2019 season. After leading the Captains to the NCAA Tournament in his first year, he enters his seventh year in 2025 with an overall record of 56-23-16. In his first year with the reins, Chezem guided the Captains to one of the biggest turnarounds in program history. He took over a 7-win team from 2018 and doubled the win total behind statistically the finest defense in program history. The Captains finished 14-2-5 overall with a 9-1-0 record in conference play to capture the Capital Athletic Conference regular season championship. He led CNU back to the NCAA Tournament where they posted a pair of shutouts against Eastern and Swarthmore.  In 2019, the Captains set program records for goals-against average and save percentage while allowing just 12 goals in over 2,014 minutes of action. The record 0.54 GAA ranked fifth in the nation while also ranking fourth nationally in save percentage with a 0.872 mark. He guided first team All-American Derek Cook and a pair of All-Region picks in his first season. The COVID-19 global pandemic canceled the 2020 season, but Chezem came back strong for his second season in 2021. The architect of the nation's toughest schedule, Chezem guided the Captains to a 12-5-2 overall record and the team's first conference championship since 2016. Again leaning on a talented defense, the CNU Men's Soccer team won nine of ten games at the end of the season to propel themselves into the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2014. CNU checked back into the national rankings and finished the year ranked No. 11 in the nation.  Over the last two seasons, the success has continued to mount as Chezem led the Captains to four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances for the first time since 2012.  Chezem has been directly involved with the CNU men's soccer program for 19 years as both a player and an assistant coach. He has been on staff as the Captains have grown to a national power, including becoming the first team in CNU Athletics history to garner a number one national ranking in 2009. Christopher Newport reached the NCAA Tournament eight times during his tenure, including three trips to the National Quarterfinals, and have won five conference championships.  During his 12 seasons as an assistant coach, Chezem helped Christopher Newport post over 200 wins with eight NCAA Tournament appearances. The Captains averaged 15 wins per season while Chezem was an assistant coach. In addition to the success on the field, Chezem helped grow the team's involvement in the community through camps and clinics while working to expand the Captains' alumni base. In 2018, he spearheaded a fundraising effort on CNU Day that netted the soccer program over $30,000.  Chezem holds a USSF 'B' coaching license and the United Soccer Coaches Premier coaching license. Prior to joining the coaching ranks, Chezem was a four-year player for head coach Steve Shaw from 2001-04. During that time, he helped the Captains post a combined 48-25-6 record. On an individual level, he was a first team All-Conference pick in 2003 and 2004. Additionally, he was named to the USA South All-Tournament team for his efforts in the postseason during the 2004 campaign. Chezem graduated with a degree in Business Marketing in 2005 and has also coached locally at Warwick High School. He and his wife Elizabeth have three children -- Tucker, Palmer, and Tate -- and currently reside in Poquoson.
