Tyler Wingard

Head Coach

Since arriving at CNU prior to the 2006-07 season, Tyler Wingard has maintained Christopher Newport's lofty position as one of the top programs both in the region and around the country. During his time with the Captains, Wingard has coached 64 All-Americans and three National Champions. Rachael Clark won the indoor shot put crown in 2007 before Richard Roethel won the indoor heptathlon in 2012 and the outdoor decathlon in 2014. Overall, CNU has sent over 100 Captains to the National Championships during his tenure. Along with the individual successes, Wingard’s teams have won 66 conference cross country and track & field championships over the past 17 years. Additionally, 51 school records have been toppled under his watch. For his work with the program, Wingard has been named the USTFCCCA South / Southeast Region Coach of the Year on 11 occasions. Prior to arriving at CNU, Wingard served as the head coach at Valparaiso for six years. While with the Crusaders, his athletes won 13 Mid-Continent Conference individual championships and two relay titles, earned 81 all-conference honors and broke 44 school records. Seven of his athletes qualified for NCAA regional competition. In addition, he coached the men’s outdoor conference Athlete of the Year in his final year and worked with three conference Newcomers of the Year.

John Napolitano

Assistant Coach

Napolitano begins his first season as the throws coach at Christopher Neport in 2014-15. A 2008 graduate of Keene State College, Napolitano has spent the past five years as the head throws coach at his alma mater. During his tenure at KSC, he coached 10 NCAA Championship Qualifiers and helped guide the Owls to six All-American honors. Two of his student-athletes also claimed national championships during his tenure. I feel very fortunate to join the Christopher Newport University athletic department, said Napolitano. I want to thank the Director of Athletics Todd Brooks and Head Track and Field Coach Tyler Wingard for giving me the opportunity to become a part of the indoor and outdoor track and field programs, and I look forward to working with our current student-athletes to help them reach their goals this season. Bringing a wealth of experience to Newport News, Napolitano headed an impressive throwing program at Keene State. During his time at KSC, his athletes won 21 Little East Conference titles, seven Division III New England crowns, and four ECAC Regional championships. They also established 10 school records and garnered 56 All-League honors. Along with their efforts on the field, Napolitanos throwers excelled in the classroom as well. He coached 21 Academic All-Conference honorees, two Capital One Academic All-District selections, and an ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American recipient. In addition to his work as the throws coach at Keene State, Napolitano also was the schools assistant sports information director. He served in the same capacity at Saint Anselm College from 2008-09 as well. Prior to joining the professional ranks, Napolitano was an All-League thrower at Keene State. He collected All-Conference accolades for his efforts in the hammer, discus, and weight throw. Additionally, he was a six-time All-LEC Academic honoree and graduated with a dual major in Communication Studies and Journalism in 2008.

Matthew Barreau

Barreaus squads have also made a mark on the national stage. The women finished second at the 2014 South / Southeast Regionals and advanced to the NCAA Championships for the first time in program history. The following year, in 2015, the men placed second at the regional meet and earned the teams first bid to the national competition in over two decades.   For his efforts, he has received a host of awards. Barreau has been named the leagues Womens Cross Country Coach of the Year four times and earned the mens honor on three occasions. Additionally, he was named the USTFCCCA South / Southeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year for his work during the 2012 outdoor and 2016 indoor track & field seasons.   Along with personal accolades and team success, Barreau has also helped the Captains achieve incredible individual accomplishments. In addition to sending the mens and womens cross country teams to the national championships, he also coached three individual qualifiers as Jade Zaharoff, Ray Gamache, and Lydia Cromwell all earned spots at the national meet.   Equally impressive working with the distance runners during the track & field season, Barreau helped Dira Hanson, Jessica McClelland, and Logan Harrington qualify for the NCAA Championships in individual distance events. He also guided the mens Distance Medley Relay to a fifth-place finish at the 2016 NCAA Indoor Nationals, which earned the foursome All-American honors.   Before arriving in Newport News, Barreau served as an assistant coach at Bethune-Cookman during the 2009-10 season and Portland State from 2005-08. His resume also includes stints as an assistant coach at Concordia in Oregon (2008-09), Adams State (2004-05), and Western Oregon (2003-04) along with experience coaching at the high school level.   In all, he has spent 13 years in collegiate coaching and also served as an editor of RunnerSpace.com. During that time, he traveled extensively to cover meets across the country, including the Penn Relays, the USATF Indoor championships, and the USA Club Outdoor Championships.   Barreau, a native of Springfield, Oregon, is a 2004 cum laude graduate of Western Oregon University. In his sixth year as Christopher Newports head cross country coach and assistant track & field coach, Matthew Barreau has made an impressive impact on the program.   During his first five seasons, he has guided the Captains to eight cross country championships.
