Robert Williams
Head Coach
Williams (Bob) joined the Clark College cross country and track and field staff as assistant coach in 2013 after a storied coaching career at the high school level. In his first year at Clark, Williams coached two athletes to All-American status in the Mens 3,000 meter steeplechase and the Womens 5,000 meters. Coach Williams specializes in coaching distance runners. He ran cross country and track, competing in the 3,000M steeplechase at NCAA Division I power house University of Oregon. He had the honor of being mentored by famed coach and Nike, Inc. co-founder Bill Bowerman, as well as Olympian, Bill Dellinger. After leaving Oregon, Williams earned his Bachelors in Health Education from Portland State University. He went on to teach health and sciences classes while helping coach a state champion cross country team at Scappoose High School. He also coached the wrestling team at Rainier High School prior to beginning his 25-year career at St. Helens High School. In 2014, Williams took on the role of head coach for both the cross country and track and field teams at Clark College and has a goal of building solid and competitive teams. He is no stranger to building strong programs. While coaching at St. Helens High School, Williams coached three state champion athletes, district champions, and helped coach the team to their first Oregon State Track and Field Championship in 2007. Williams former distance athlete, Ryan Waite, earned state champion and All-American honors in the 800M posting a 1:50.67. Waite went on to compete at Brigham Young University. Coach Williams is excited to bring his experience, passion, and love of the sport to Clark College. If you were to speak to Williams athletes, you would likely hear that Bobs quiet, reflective nature, consistent demeanor, good sense of humor, and genuine interest in developing adults of strong character are what set him apart as a coach and mentor. Coach Williams lives in Vancouver with his wife and dog. He and his wife have two children, three stepchildren and three grandchildren. He credits his youngest grandson with keeping him young! Kristie Brookes
Associate Head Coach
Brookes earned All-American honors in the heptathlon, which she will brings to her second year coaching job at Clark College. Coach Brookes applies the experience and knowledge gained from competing as a multi-event athlete to the following key areas: speed development, energy conservation, proper biomechanics (sprints, throws and jumps) and meet management skills. During her 13 years of coaching, Kristie has coached 9 state champions in the 400 meters, 100 meters, and relays. She has also coached several top 10 finishers at the WIAA State Championships, and NWAC Championships in the sprints and jumps. Brookes coaching philosophy begins with training athletes to become technically sound runners. This is accomplished by establishing a strong and explosive base and then transitioning to concentrated work on vertical and horizontal propulsion. Kristie believes it is essential to stay up to date on the latest research in the areas of technique, biomechanics, nutrition and recovery. She is a USATF Level 2 Coach in distance, jumps, hurdles, and sprints. In addition to coaching, Brookes is actively involved in giving back to the sport she loves. She is a certified USATF Level One Coaches Educator. Over the past 5 years, she has presented on topics ranging from periodization to event specific training at numerous coaches clinics across the state of Washington.

Chris Wetzel
Assistant Coach
Wetzel is in his first year with the Clark College Track and Field program. Head Coach Bob Williams is excited to bring his experience and knowledge to the Penguin program in working with the multi-event athletes and throwers. As an athlete competing for the track and field program at the University of Colorado, Wetzel earned All-Big 8 honors in the decathlon. Coach Wetzel will apply the experience and knowledge gained from competing as a multi-event athlete at a high level to the key areas of speed development, proper technique and mental discipline. Wetzel also follows a coaching philosophy that begins with training athletes to become technically sound, instilling a culture of unity among peers, and dedication to results from daily commitment.
