Associate Head Coach
Grimes. As Grimes enters her eleventh season as an Associate Head Coach, her athletes continue to achieve success at the regional and national levels. In addition to working with the throwers, Grimes also works with the multi-event athletes. During her first ten seasons at Coastal, she helped guide the Lady Chanticleers to Big South Outdoor Track and Field titles in 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, and 2014 as well as the Big South Indoor titles in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2013, and 2014. Grimes has coached one All-East Region performer, 3 NCAA East Preliminary Round Qualifiers, 13 NCAA East Regional Qualifiers, 10 Conference Champions and 54 All-Conference performers. In 2008, Brittany Connor qualified for USATF Junior National meet in the hammer throw. Deborah Mattern set a new Coastal Carolina and Big South Conference record in the javelin throw in 2011 at the Seminole Invitational with a mark of 46.03m (151'00") and qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary round. In 2012, Shantelle Patterson qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary round in the hammer, as well as, Danielle England in the javelin. Grimes also helped Coastal's men's team to the 2006 Big South Outdoor title. She has coached one All-American, one 2nd team All-American, three Junior All-Americans, three All-East Region performers, 5 NCAA East Preliminary Round Qualifiers, 14 NCAA East Regional Qualifiers, 8 Big South Individual Champions and 23 All-Conference performers. In 2006, Grimes coached Thomas Jordan to a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Championship meet, which earned him All-America status. Also that same year, Thomas Jordan and Kyle Hoddy represented Coastal at USATF National Championship meet in the javelin. In 2009, Mark Manno (hammer), Jason Jensen (hammer) and Jason Flanagan (javelin) qualified for the USATF Junior National meet in Eugene, OR. Manno and Jensen both earned Junior All-American status, in the hammer throw, by finishing 4th and 6th in their event. In 2012, Jason Flanagan set a new Coastal Carolina and Big South Conference record in the javelin with a mark of 73.01m (239'6"). He qualified for the NCAA Championship and earned 2nd team All-American in the javelin and earned the prestigious honor to compete at the 2012 Olympic Trails in Eugene, OR. In that same year, Ryan Minor qualified for the USATF Junior National meet in Des Moines, IA in the hammer. In 2013, Jordan Entwistle qualified for the USATF Junior Nation meet in Des Moines, IA and finished 2nd overall earning Junior All-American status. Grimes arrived to Coastal from UNC Wilmington where she was the assistant track and field coach from 1997-2003. She helped the Seahawk men's team to six consecutive CAA titles from 1998-2003. In 2000, Grimes took over as the Interim Head Coach and was named the CAA Men's Track and Field Coach of the Year after winning the Men's Conference title. While at UNCW, Grimes coached two indoor NCAA provisional qualifiers, four outdoor NCAA Regional qualifiers, 33 CAA Champions and 134 All-Conference selections. She also served as the strength coordinator for the sprinters, jumpers and throwers. Before her time at UNCW, Grimes spent one year as a graduate assistant and one year as a student assistant at Troy State University, her alma mater. She coached five conference champions and seven All-Conference athletes. Grimes earned her bachelors of Science degree in Biology from Troy State University in 1996. She was a member of the Trojan track and field team from 1993-95. Prior to heading Troy State, Grimes attended Monmouth College in Monmouth, Ill. and was a two-sport athlete, participating on the track and field team and basketball for two seasons. Grimes currently resides in Myrtle Beach.

Charone Williams
Assistant Coach
Williams coached athletes to seven school records, two conference championships and one NCAA meet. In September of 2013, Williams joined the track and field staff at Georgia Southern University as a volunteer assistant. He was in charge of men's and women's jumps while assisting with sprints and hurdles, in addition to contributing to the program's recruiting efforts. Prior to going to North Florida, Williams worked as an assistant coach at the high school level for seven years at two different schools in Florida. Williams had a three-year career as a member of the men's team at Auburn University. He specialized in the 400-meter hurdles, while also running the 400 meters in indoor, 4x400 relay in indoor and outdoor and the 4x100 in outdoor. In 2003, he was a member of the Tigers' NCAA runner-up team. Williams received a Bachelor's degree in sociology from the University of Central Florida in 2010. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |

Christopher Courson

Courson was an integral part of a coaching staff that saw the Chanticleer women claim the Big South's Triple Crown with championships in cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field. During the 2014 indoor season the Chanticleer women claimed conference championships in the triple jump, 4x400m relay and the 400m dash where Christal Green set a new Big South and Coastal record with a time of 53.85 seconds. The outdoor season for the women saw conference titles in the 400m dash, 400m hurdles, long jump and 4x100m relay en route to the team title that capped off the Triple Crown. Jessica Gelibert was also named the Big South Runner of the Year for her efforts during the 2014 outdoor season. The Chanticleer men produced four conference champions as they finished second in the team standings in 2014, taking the titles in the 4x100m relay and high jump, as well as first, second and third place sweeps in the triple jump and 400m dash. The Chants also qualified 10 individuals for five events at the NCCA East Preliminary Round where three Coastal records were set. DeAndre Lipscomb set a new CCU record in the 400m dash with a time of 47.02. Lipscomb then teamed up with Corey Hackett-Green, Alex Hass and Stevie Brunson to set a 4x400m relay record with a time of 3:08.12. Jessica Gelibert was the final record breaker with a 56.87 performance in the 400m hurdles. Reggie Nelson then tied for 10th place in the high jump, qualifying him for the NCAA Championships at historic Heyward Field at the University of Oregon where he placed 19th and earned honorable mention All-American honors. During the 2013 indoor season the women notched another indoor Big South Conference championship defeating second place Liberty by 40 points. Among the six conference champions, and six all conference performances, the Chants also received two awards including Erica Peake as Most Outstanding Track Performer, and Jessica Gelibert took home the Freshman of the Year award. Later on in the season Erica Peake received All-American honors by placing ninth at the NCAA indoor Championships in the 200m dash with a time of 23.40. During the outdoor season, the Chants sent high jumper Reggie Nelson, 100m hurdler Christina Davis, 400m hurdler Jessica Gelibert, the men's 4x400m relay and the women's 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams to the preliminary round of the NCAA Championships. The women's 4x400m and 4x100m relay both set new school records and advanced to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon where both squads received Honorable Mention All-America honors. Capping off a successful season was freshman Jessica Gelibert who earned a third place finish at the Junior Pan American Athletics Championships in MedellĂn, Columbia in the 400m hurdles where she represented her parent's native country of Haiti. During the 2012 season the women achieved a runner-up finish during the indoor season, and an outdoor Big South Team Championship. Courson helped coach 11 Big South champions, 19 All Big South performers and 3 NCAA preliminary round qualifiers during the 2012 season. Prior to coaching at Coastal, Courson worked at East Carolina University for three years, where he served as a volunteer assistant coach for the track and field program while completing work toward his Masters degree. During this time Courson helped coach freshman Aiesha Goggins to a USATF Outdoor National qualifying time of 51.94 seconds in the 400m dash where she finished the season ranked 4th in the NCAA. Goggins, along with the women's 4x400 meter relay, qualified for the NCAA championships that year where Goggins received second team All-American honors. During his career at ECU, Courson helped coach 13 NCAA East regional championship qualifiers, six Conference USA Champions, one Conference USA meet team record, 21 All Conference USA performers, one Penn Relays champion relay team, and eight school record holders. Courson received his Masters in exercise physiology from East Carolina University in 2010 and earned his Bachelor's Degree in exercise & sport science from UNC Wilmington in 2008. He was a member of the Division I Seahawks track and field team. During his competitive career at UNCW, Courson was a four-time NCAA East Regional qualifier as a member of the 4x400m relay team. He also received three IC4A All-East honors in the 400m and the 4x400m relay. Courson was a four-time CAA Conference Champion and was a part of three CAA team championships. Courson still holds school records in the 4x400, and 4x200 meter relays. Courson married his wife, Rhonette, in June of 2013 and they now live in Conway, S.C.

Zola Pieterse
Assistant Coach
Pieterse still holds two junior world records in the mile (4:17.54) and the 3,000 meters (8:28.83). During her career she also broke records in the outdoor 2,000 and 3,000 meters and the indoor 3,000 meters. She is still currently training and competing in road and cross country races. Most recently, she twice completed the Comrades Marathon (2012 and 2014), a 56 mile race across South Africa. While serving as a volunteer assistant, Pieterse competed at the 2008 Blue Ridge Mountain Open, winning the 5k race with a time of 17:53. Additionally, she participated in the 2008 New York Marathon, placing 10th in her age group and was the 69th female overall with a time of 2:59.53. In August, 2011 she finished second in the World Master's Cross Country Championship, representing South Africa, competing against all master level runners in the world above the age of 35. Additionally, in October 2011 she finished second in the Myrtle Beach Half Marathon with a time of 1:19:51. From 2011-15 Pieterse worked to establish Newton, a new brand of running shoes, in South Africa. In 2011 she served on the local organizing committee for the USATF Youth National Track & Field Championships and the Junior Olympic Cross Country National Championships both held in Myrtle Beach, S.C. In addition, she is a USATF Level I certified coach. Pieterse, her husband Mike and three children - Mikey, Azelle and Lisa - reside in Myrtle Beach.

Rhonette Courson
Assistant Coach
Courson is entering her second year at Coastal Carolina working with the men's and women's pole vaulters. Courson graduated from UNC Wilmington in 2008 with a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education where she competed in the pole Vault. She also spent a year as a volunteer assistant coach at UNCW after she exhausted her eligibility. Courson currently works as a 5th grade teacher at Myrtle Beach Intermediate School. She and her husband Chris live in Myrtle Beach.

Jeff Jacobs

Jacobs enters his 11th year overall at Coastal Carolina University, while spending the previous 10 years as the head men's cross country/track & field coach. In spring of 2014, Jacobs led the men's outdoor track and field team to its eighth runner-up finish at the Big South Championships in 10 seasons. Guided by Jacobs, Reggie Nelson earned Honorable Mention All-American honors in the high jump by placing 19th at the NCAA Championships. Nelson finished 10th at the NCAA East Preliminary meet where he was joined by teammate DeAndra Lipscomb and the school's 4x400 relay team. Coastal totaled 22 All-Big South honors among 15 different student-athletes, Nelson was named the Outstanding Field Performer of the Year and the Chanticleers broke school records in the 400 meters and 4x200 and 4x400 relays. In the fall of 2013, Jacobs guided the men's cross country team to a win at the CCU Invitational and a fifth place finish out of 12 teams at the Big South Championship. Juniors Joseph Keitt and Evan Niciphor were named to the All-Conference Team and Dan Riff was named Freshman Runner of the Year. For the third consecutive year the squad earned USTFCCCA DI All-Academic Team status by carrying a 3.0 or higher team cumulative GPA. During Jacobs' 10 seasons at the helm of the men's cross country team, his athletes have been named to the All-Conference Team 16 times, the squad has claimed six CCU Invitational titles and earned All-Academic Team honors five times. The 2013 outdoor track & field campaign continued the consistency the program has had under Jacobs with another second-place finish at the Big South Championships. With a title coming in 2006 the team has never finished lower than third (once in 2009) at the Big South Championship under Jacobs' leadership. At the 2013 Big South Championship, athletes earned 13 All-conference honors and three conference titles. Three individuals and the 4x400m relay represented the Chanticleers at the NCAA East Preliminary round and two freshmen qualified for the USATF Junior (under 20) National championships. Finally a Chant was named Big South Athlete of the Week five times during the season. During the 2012 cross country season the team won the CCU Invitational and finished sixth out of 12 at the Big South Championship. Joseph Keitt earned All-Conference status with a 10th place finish and Kyle Kling was named to the All-Academic Team. In addition Kling was granted the NCAA student-athlete Post-Graduate Award. The team earned USTFCCCA DI All-Academic Team honors with a 3.2 cumulative GPA. Under Jacobs, the men's track and field team notched its third consecutive runner-up finish in the Big South Championships in 2012. Jacobs coached three Big South individual champions and nine all-conference honorees during the season. Jacobs led the Chants to a seventh place finish at the 2011 Big South Cross Country Championships as Coastal's top six finishers turned in personal-bests on the speedy course. The Chanticleers started the season with a win at the Gamecock Open as Joseph Keitt won his first collegiate meet followed by a fourth place finish at the Coastal Carolina Invitational/Big South Preview. Freshman Evan Niciphor led the Chants in five meets, including the Big South Championship and NCAA Southeast Regional. The 2011 track & field campaign saw Jacobs coach five All-Big South Conference honorees as Coastal turned in a runner-up finish at the Big South Championship meet. Jacques Watson claimed the third high jump crown of his career as Jason Flanagan (javelin) and Kyle Kling (10,000m) claimed runner-up finishes. Additionally, Charlie Tidwell (hammer) and Tyler Askew (long jump) turned in third place finishes at the meet. Under the mentorship of Jacobs and his staff, Watson (high jump), Flanagan (javelin), Kling (10,000m), Corey Jameson (100-meters) and the 4x100-meter relay team of Jameson, Chris Lawson, Ryan Edlich and Lenny Steed qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary Round. The 2010 cross country season saw Jacobs lead the Chanticleers to a second place finish in the season opening Gamecock Open and a seventh place finish at the Big South Championship meet. He coached All-Big South Conference honoree Kyle Kling to top ten finishes in each race of the season including a first place finish in the Mount Olive Invitational. Jacobs guided the track team to a second place finish at the 2010 Big South Championship meet and produced five Big South Champions. Additionally, eight of Jacobs' student-athletes advanced to the NCAA East Regional. He also coached Jason Jensen who was named to the Big South All-Academic team, USTFCCCA All-Academic team and garnered two Big South Conference field athlete of the week honors. Jacobs coached the Chanticleers to a great start, winning the first two meets of the 2009 cross country season. In the Big South Cross Country Championships, the Chants ran to a third place finish with three runners (Jamie McCarthy, Kyle Kling, and Max Hacker) coming in the top ten and earning All-Big South. Kling also earned a place on the Big South All-Academic Team. For the 2009 track and field season, Jacobs oversaw the team to a third-place Big South finish and saw five members of his squad qualify for NCAA East Regional. He coached Jacques Watson to a 14th-place finish in the NCAA Nationals and a 12th place finish at the USA Track and Field Nationals. Jacobs also saw two throwers qualify for the USATF Junior National Qualifiers (under 20), with Mark Manno and Jason Jensen placing in the top-10. In the 2008 track and field season, Jacobs saw seven members of his squad qualify for NCAA East Regional. At the Big South Conference Championship, the Chanticleers came away with five individual titles, including Coastal Carolina's first ever Big South high jump crown. During the 2007 cross country season, Jacobs guided the Chanticleers to their third consecutive CCU Invitational title, placing four runners in the top five. Coastal finished sixth in the team standings at the New Balance Big South Conference Championships. Blair Paul was named to both the All-Conference and All-Academic teams. Jacobs led the 2007 track and field team to a record setting season. The squad re-wrote most of the school record book, setting 10 school records. Meanwhile, Thomas Jordan set a new facility record in the javelin at the Big South Championships. CCU claimed two individual champions at the Big South Championships en route to a runner-up team finish. Coastal registered 15 All-Conference athletes and five regional qualifiers, while Jerome Simpson qualified for the NCAA Championships in the long jump. Jacobs led the 2006 cross country team to a second-place finish at the Big South Championships, coaching two athletes to All-Conference honors, one to the All-Academic team and the Big South Freshman of the Year in Jamie McCarthy. The Chanticleers spent the majority of the season ranked 10th in the Southeast Region and sent seven runners to the Regional meet where they finished 18th in the team standings. The team claimed first place in both the Covered Bridge Open and the CCU Invitational. The 2006 track season was a banner year for Jacobs' program at Coastal. The squad captured just the second Big South Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship in school history, scoring 205 points. In the course of the meet, 14 CCU athletes posted All-Conference performances, including five conference champions and the Big South Freshman of the Year Tyrone Murphy. Jacobs also earned Co-Coach of the Year honors and had five athletes qualify for the NCAA East Regional Championships. From there, Jordan advanced to the NCAA Championships in the javelin and became just Coastal's second track and field All-American. In his first year at the helm, Jacobs guided the Chanticleer track and field team to a runner-up finish in the Big South Championships as 11 athletes had All-Conference finishes, including three conference champions. Three athletes qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships, and two advanced to the NCAA National Championships, including Mark Johnson in the pole vault, who became first All-American in program history. Seven school records were established during the 2005 season. Jacobs came to Coastal from the University of California at Santa Barbara, where he served as the assistant men's and women's track and field and cross country coach since the fall of 1999. Jacobs began his coaching career during the 1991-1992 season as an assistant at UCSB with the men's cross country team. He took a few years away from the sport before rejoining the Gauchos during the fall of 1999 as an assistant. During his time with the Gauchos, Jacobs coached the UCSB distance runners to school records in the women's 1,500 meters, 5,000 meters, 3,000-meter steeplechase, 10,000 meters and the distance medley relay. Under Jacobs' guidance, men's records were also set in the 800 meters and 10,000 meters. Two athletes achieved All-American status during Jacobs tenure, with one in men's cross country in 2001 and another in women's track and field in 2003. UCSB also achieved great team success as the men's cross country squad qualified for the NCAA Championships for the first time in 200 1, finishing 17th. The women also made their mark in 2003, making their first-ever trip to the NCAA Championships, finishing 29th. In 2004, four Gaucho distance runners qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Besides his assistant coaching duties with UCSB, Jacobs also worked for a local financial planning organization for five years. Jacobs was an accomplished athlete with the Gauchos, capturing the cross country team's MVP award in three seasons as well as being named All-Conference in 1988. His best 5,000 meter time in college was 14:34.11. Jacobs remained a competitive long-distance runner post-collegiately. He won his age group and finished 4 overall in the 2006 Myrtle Beach Marathon in a time of 2:37:04 at the age of 39. He finished 25th out of 15,000 runners at the 33rd annual "Wharf to Wharf" six-mile race at Santa Cruz in July of 2005. He won the CCU Homecoming 5k in November of 2004 in a course-record time of 15:40. He set the course record of 1:30.29 in the 2000 "Pier to Peak" Half Marathon, a 4,000-foot elevation climb. Jacobs captured the individual crown in the 2000 Santa Barbara Half Marathon with a time of 1:12:12. In 1991, Jacobs won "The People's Race" in Carlsbad, Calif., posting a 5,000-meter road personal best time of 14:23. His best 10,000 meter track time remains at 30:22.63, which he set in March 1997. His best half marathon time is 1:09:24 and his best marathon time is 2:33:57. Jacobs earned his bachelor of arts degree in communication studies at UC-Santa Barbara in 1992 and also completed the Coaching Certification Program at UCSB. Jacobs is a certified USATF Level II Coach in both endurance and sprints and hurdles. Jacobs also serves as Big South Conference Track and Field Coaches Chair and NCAA DI Executive Committee Representative for the USTFCCCA since July 2013, and served a previous term from July 2008-June of 2010. Jacobs has been very active as well in the local track & field community. In 2008 he was a co-founder of the Myrtle Beach Track & Field Club and served as the first President of the non-profit organization that mainly serves youth athletes from January of 2009-December of 2010. Jacobs also served on the local organizing committees for the 2011 USATF World Youth Trials and USATF Youth National Championships held at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium and was on the LOC and designed the course for the 2011 USATF National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championship held at Whispering Pines GC in Myrtle Beach.
