Head Coach

Cummings has had 60 student athletes move on to four-year universities, each of them receiving an athletic scholarship or some type of academic scholarship. This past season the Lancers where 27-26 overall, where they lost the championship game in the sectionals playoffs. The Lancers had 6 All Conference players, Dominic Cuevas SS 1 team, Freddie Landers 3 1 team, Wes Gordon RHP 1 team, Jakob Peterson catcher 1 team, Nick Seketa RHP 2 team and Kyle Vanderwall OF 2 team. 2 All region players, Dominic Cuevas SS 2 team all-region, Freddie Landers 3 2 team all-region and Dominic Cuevas SS was the Defensive Player of the Year in region 4. Coach Cummings main goal at CLC is to develop his players individually. He works with them one-on-one to get the best out of them. He does not believe in a cookie cutter approach to coaching. To him every student athlete must be approached as an individual with unique talents and coaching needs. Coach Cummings overall record in the last 6 years at CLC is 125 wins and 124 losses. Coach Cummings played high school baseball at Zion-Benton High School. He played his first two years of college baseball at CLC, where he was coached by the legendary Gene Hanson. His sophomore year, he was an All-Conference and All-State winner and Team Captain of the 1994 Region IV State Champions team. He then received a baseball scholarship at Erskine College (DII) in South Carolina where he was the team MVP his junior year. Heath started his coaching career at Zion-Benton High School in 1997 and remained on staff through 2010. He began as the freshman coach and finished as the head varsity baseball coach for his last three years there. He also coached a summer Colt 16U team for six years. This team qualified for the AABC state tournament. In 2001 and 2002 they took second place both years. In 2003 they took third place. In 2009 his 16U colt team took first place in AABC state tournament.The combined team records were 98-39 for the Colt team. At Zion-Benton, his combined team record was 324-244. Coach Cummings has been married to his high school sweetheart, Sara, for 20 years. They have two great kids, Troy (14) and Molly (13). Troy plays hockey and Molly competes in volleyball. Scott Murphy is beginning his 3rd year as an assistant baseball coach for CLC. Coach Murphy is responsible for working with the infielders and hitters. Coach Murphy played high school baseball for Waukegan High School.  Waukegan finished 3rd in the state during his junior year.  He attended MacMurray College and was the starting 2nd baseman for all 4 years.  He lead the team in hitting his junior and senior years.  He was named captain and MVP his junior and senior years. He graduated from MacMurray with a teaching degree in history and government.  After graduation Murphy signed a professional baseball contract with the Baltimore Orioles.  He played 5 years in the Oriole organization before an injury ended his professional career. Murphy has coached the American Legion teams in both Waukegan and Zion. He also served as a volunteer coach for Waukegan East High School and Zion Benton Township High School. Coach Murphy is a member of the Waukegan Sports Hall of Fame and the MacMurray College Athletic Hall of Fame. Murphy was in education for 36 years as a teacher and principal in Beach Park and Zion High School Districts. He retired in 2008. He has 2 sons Brandon 37 and Ryan 31.  Zac is entering his first season as pitching coach with College of Lake County and his seventh year coaching. He is also the Manger for Fond du Lac in the Northwoods League. During the last five years, Charbonneau was an assistant coach at Roosevelt University in Chicago. Each season as a Laker assistant the club improved their winning percentage. During his tenure, Zac also saw the signing of their first two players to professional contracts. Charbonneau was the manager of the Springfield Sliders of the Prospect League in 2016 and led the team to the best record in the league.  The season was capped off with him being named 2016 Prospect League Manager of the Year.  Zac also managed the Des Plaines Patriots of the Metro Collegiate League for three years. In that time, the club has finished in the top 2 three times and won the league in 2014. In that summer, the Patriots won the AAABA National Championship in Johnstown, PA.  During his time coaching 12 of his players have moved on to professional baseball. His playing career started at Oak Forest High School in Oak Forest, Illinois where the Bengals won conference three times and was a two time captain. The 2006 edition of the Bengals earned a 29-5 record. Following graduation, Zac moved on to Moraine Valley CC to play for Mike Kashirsky. The 2007 team set a school record with 39 wins and won Region IV Sectional.  Zac appeared in 22 games batting .273. Sophomore year Charbonneau played at Prairie State College for Bill Storrs. While captaining the Pioneers, Zac hit .341 and earned second team all skyway conference. He was also honored as the best defensive catcher in the conference. Following the season, he was selected to play in the Region IV All-Star Game. Zac then moved on to Millikin University, however, his career was cut short after multiple surgeries. Zac earned a Bachelors degree at Millikin in Sports Management with a minor in Communications. In the offseason, Zac gives lessons at Players Edge in Mundelein. He resides in Libertyville, IL with his wife, Jenna and their dog, Annie B.  Zac is huge Notre Dame Football fan and phenomenal dancer.
