Dan Eckberg

Head Coach

Eckberg looks to help CSB finish even higher in 2016-17. Eckberg, who enters his fourth season as the teams head coach, guided Saint Benedict to its second-straight fifth-place finish at the MIAC Championships in February. CSB finished fourth in 2013-14 in his first season with the program. Eckberg served as the interim head coach in 2013-14 and was named head coach prior to the 2014-15 season. In 2015-16, CSB won the Hamline Invite and finished 2-2 in duals with wins against St. Kates and Carleton. The Carleton dual came down to the final race of the day. CSB finished the season with 82 personal bests, 15 individual times or marks in the top 10 in school history and four relay times that made the schools all-time top-10 list, including a pair of school records. Kristina Rudin, Katie Heller, Gaby Hagen and Steph Bierman teamed up to set the 200 and 400 freestyle relay records at the 2016 MIAC Championships. Rudin, Kenzie Young, Ashley Groebner and Jenna Humbert all made it into the top 10 or improved their times in two individual events, and Rudin was part of all four top-10 relays. Senior diver Carissa Gaffy-Sanford improved on three marks and moved up in the top 10, and first-year diver Briana Lovato made it into the top 10 in two events. Gaffy-Sanford earned All-MIAC honors at the MIAC Championships after finishing third in the one-meter dive. She also finished fourth in the three-meter competition. Bierman made finals in three events (50, 100 and 200 freestyle), and finished in the top six in all three. Eight individuals finished in the top eight and three relay teams finished in the top four at the conference championships for Saint Benedict in 2016. At the end of the season, CSB earned CSCAA Team Scholar All-America honors for the fifth straight year with a team GPA of 3.35. This marks the seventh time in the past eight years CSB has been honored with the team academic award. In his first three seasons at the helm, Eckberg has coached five All-MIAC athletes, five Individual Scholar All-Americans and watched three school records fall. Thirty of the athletes Eckberg has coached at CSB have recorded times or marks in the top 10 in school history in their college swimming careers. Eckberg came to CSB prior to the 2013 season from nearby St. Cloud Tech High School where he served as head coach from 2009 to 2012. He worked with both the boys and girls programs at Tech, and prior to his head coaching duties he was an assistant coach from 2007-09.
