Barry Chastey

Head Coach

Chastey enters his 12th season as the head coach of the Saints in 2016. He was first hired at St. Scholastica in the summer of 2003 as the head mens and womens junior varsity coach and assistant to both varsity programs before moving into the head coaching position for the 2005 season. Under the direction of Chastey, the Saints have claimed nine UMAC Regular Season and seven Tournament Championships. In 2010, Chastey led the Saints to a sweep of the conference regular season and tournament championship en route to the programs first NCAA Tournament berth. In 2012, he guided the Saints to their second NCAA Tournament appearance where it fell to eventual national semifinalist Loras College (Iowa) in the first round. In each of the last four seasons, Chastey has guided the Saints to highest scoring offense in the nation. In 2014, he led the Saints to the first 20-win season in program history. Chastey was named the UMAC Coach of the Year in 2007.   In 11 seasons with the Saints, Chastey has coached 11 UMAC Players of the Year, 55 First Team All-UMAC honorees, 62 Academic All-UMAC student-athletes, five NAIA Scholar-Athletes and one ESPN the Magazine First Team Academic All-American. In 2015, he coached the programs first, First Team NSCAA NCAA All-American in Kyle Farrar. Chastey hails from England where he built his coaching philosophy in working with both youth and adult teams for six years. In addition to his coaching experience, Chastey expanded his knowledge of soccer through playing the game for twenty years, including six years of semi-professional soccer. Upon first moving to the United States, Chastey spent three years working as an assistant in the highly successful Duluth East High School girls soccer program. Currently, Chastey is also the coaching director of the Gitchi Gummi Soccer Club, where he works to develop both the coaches and the players within the competitive summer soccer club. From 2012-15, Chastey guided the Saints to the highest scoring offense in the nation. In 2014, he led the Saints to the first 20-win season in program history. His squads currently hold the NCAA record for consecutive conference games without a loss. Chastey was named the UMAC Coach of the Year in 2007.   In 17 seasons with the Saints, Chastey has coached 11 Conference Players of the Year, 70 First Team All-Conference honorees, 115 Academic All-Conference student-athletes, five NAIA Scholar-Athletes and one CoSIDA First Team Academic All-American. In 2015, he coached the program’s first, First Team NSCAA NCAA All-American in Kyle Farrar. Dave Robinson

Assistant Coach

Robinson begins his 12th season on the mens soccer staff and fourth year with the womens team in 2016. Coach Robinson was born in Liverpool, England where had the pleasure of watching the dominating Reds collect numerous European Cups throughout his formative days on Merseyside.  While in England, he played for and graduated from the Royal Air Force with a degree in Electronics and communications.   Robinson has coached with the Gitchi Gummi Soccer Club for the past 19 years where he has helped to develop numerous young Duluth soccer players. He also led the Cloquet Girls High School team to two State tournaments in three years following their back-to-back Section 7A championship seasons. Coach Chastey adds, "His love and understanding of the game has made Dave one of the best coaches in the area. I am very excited to have him on our staff."   Coach Robinson continues to work on the development of soccer for both players and coaches within Minnesota.  He is a member of the ODP player identification staff and an instructor for the coaches National Youth License.  Locally he is on the AYSA, and the Denfeld Soccer boards.   Coach Robinson has lived in Duluth with his wife Kim for 29 years.
