Jimmy Fenerty

Assistant Coach

Jimmy Fenerty ­joined the Tribe staff as an assistant coach in May of 2022. He spent the previous four seasons at Temple University and has eight years of Division I experience as an assistant coach. In his second season in Williamsburg, Fenerty helped W&M one of the top turnarounds in the country, a 7.5-game improvement, to finish with 17 wins. The 17 wins were the 12th most in program history. The Tribe posted an 11-7 record which ranked as the eighth-best conference improvement in the country. In 2024-25, W&M ranked among the national leaders in adjusted offensive tempo (18th), fastbreak points per game (16th), 3-pointers made per game (15th), bench scoring (eight) and assists (25th). The Tribe’s 336 made 3-pointers in 2024-25 ranked second in school history and are the sixth most in CAA history.   In each of the last two years, Fenerty helped the Owls to 10 wins in American Athletic Conference play, including an upset win at No. 1 Houston, 56-55, on Jan. 22, 2023. The Owls also picked up wins over No. 16 Villanova, VCU and Rutgers during the non-conference portion of the schedule in 2022-23. Temple won 17 games in 2021-22 and followed with 16 in 2022-23.   During his time as an assistant at Temple, Owls earned four All-AAC honors, three AAC All-Rookie Team selections, eight AAC Players of the Week, five AAC Rookies of the Week, two NABC All-District Team choices and the 2021 AAC Sportsmanship Award winner. The Owls’ 2021 recruiting class was ranked No. 46 nationally by Rivals.com.   Fenerty also spent four years as an assistant coach in the Patriot League at Lafayette College. With the Leopards, he served as the recruiting coordinator. He recruited and mentored 2018 Patriot League Rookie of the Year Alex Petrie and 2019 third team All-Patriot League player Justin Jaworski. Fenerty, the son of Hall of Fame Germantown Academy coach Jim Fenerty, graduated from Dickinson College in 2013 with a degree in policy management. He helped the Red Devils to a school record 21 wins during his senior season. Dickinson won the Centennial Conference Championship and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. During his undergraduate career, he worked as a counselor at various summer basketball camps, including Temple, Hoop Group, Rutgers, Lafayette, Dickinson and Germantown Academy. Fenerty started his collegiate coaching career as a graduate manager at Temple in 2013-15. He helped to design offseason individual workouts and assisted with recruiting endeavors. Additionally, he organized the team camp and oversaw the daily operations of the program as a whole. He earned his master's degree from Temple in 2015 in educational leadership.

Max Ginsberg

Assistant Coach

Max Ginsberg joined the Tribe in April of 2024 after spending the previous three seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater Cornell under Tribe head coach Brian Earl. In his first season in Williamsburg, Ginsberg helped W&M one of the top turnarounds in the country, a 7.5-game improvement, to finish with 17 wins. The 17 wins were the 12th most in program history. The Tribe posted an 11-7 record which ranked as the eighth-best conference improvement in the country. In 2024-25, W&M ranked among the national leaders in adjusted offensive tempo (18th), fastbreak points per game (16th), 3-pointers made per game (15th), bench scoring (eight) and assists (25th). The Tribe’s 336 made 3-pointers in 2024-25 ranked second in school history and are the sixth most in CAA history. During his three seasons at Cornell, the Big Red posted a 54-20 record, including 25-17 in the Ivy League. Cornell qualified for the Ivy League Tournament, which only takes four teams, during all three seasons, and five players earned All-Ivy League honors, including a first teamer in 2023-24. Over that span, the Big Red also regularly led the Ivy League and ranked among the national leaders in scoring offense, 3-pointers made and attempted, field goal %, effective field goal %, assists, assist-to-turnover ratio, bench points, fastbreak points, and steals.   In 2023-24, Ginsberg helped the Big Red to one of the best seasons in school history. Cornell posted a 22-8 mark, which marked the second-most wins in school history, and finished in tie for second in the Ivy League standings at 11-3. The Big Red also received the program’s first bid to the NIT. Cornell posted a school record for assists and assist-to-turnover ratio in a season in 2023-24 and ranked in the top three in school history in 3-pointers made, steals, and scoring average. Nationally, Cornell led the country in bench scoring, while ranking among the top 20 in effective field goal % (sixth), assists (sixth), 3-pointers made (10th), 14th in field goal % (14th), and scoring (16th).   In 2022-23, Ginsberg and the Big Red won 17 games and qualified for the Ivy League Tournament. Despite replacing four starters, Cornell opened the season 14-4 with a two-point loss at eventual ACC champion and Final Four participant Miami (Fla.). The Big Red led the Ivy League in 11 categories, including scoring offense (81.7) and 3-pointers made (10.7).   Despite being picked seventh in the preseason Ivy League media poll, Cornell earned the program's second conference tournament bid and posted a 15-11 final record in Ginsberg's first season back in Ithaca.   Ginsberg spent two seasons as director of basketball operations under Coach Brett Nelson after one year as the team's video coordinator under Coach Bill Carmody at Holy Cross. His primary responsibilities included coordinating recruiting efforts, summer camps and day-to-day office duties, in addition to serving as the team’s travel and video coordinator. As an undergraduate, Ginsberg spent four years with the Cornell men’s basketball program. He served as the assistant to the director of basketball operations during the 2017-18 season, where he assisted with practice plans, scouting reports, film editing and travel arrangements. Ginsberg also spent three years as the team’s head student manager. In addition, he was the director of the Cornell summer basketball camp in 2017, while working as a coach at summer camps for Holy Cross and UCLA.   Ginsburg earned his bachelor of science in policy analysis and management from Cornell in 2018. He received a master’s degree in communication management from the University of Southern California in 2019.

Alex Mumphard

Assistant Coach

Alex Mumphard joined the Tribe staff in April of 2024 as an assistant coach. He has nine years of Division I experience, spending time at Denver University, Cornell, and Northwestern. In his first season in Williamsburg, Mumphard helped W&M one of the top turnarounds in the country, a 7.5-game improvement, to finish with 17 wins. The 17 wins were the 12th most in program history. The Tribe posted an 11-7 record which ranked as the eighth-best conference improvement in the country. In 2024-25, W&M ranked among the national leaders in adjusted offensive tempo (18th), fastbreak points per game (16th), 3-pointers made per game (15th), bench scoring (eight) and assists (25th). The Tribe’s 336 made 3-pointers in 2024-25 ranked second in school history and are the sixth most in CAA history. At Denver, Mumphard helped the Pioneers win 17 games in 2023-24, the program’s most since 2012-13, and advance to the Summit League Championship Game for the first time in program history. Guard Tommy Bruner earned All-Summit League First Team and ranked second in the country in scoring at 24 points per game. Bruner was an NABC First Team All-District 12, All-Summit League First Team, and was named to the Oscar Robertson Trophy and All-America Watch List as well as the Lou Henson Award Mid-Season Watch List. The Pioneers excelled on the offensive end, averaging 81 points per game, which ranked 25th nationally. Denver recorded 16 game of 80 or more points, the program’s most since 1996-97. Denver also had 10 game of 90 or more points, which ranks among the top 10 nationally. Prior to Denver, Mumphard was an assistant coach for five seasons under Brian Earl at Cornell. In his final two seasons with the Big Red, Cornell posted 15-11 and 17-11 records, advancing to the Ivy League Tournament. In his first season, he helped lead the Big Red to its first postseason appearance in nine year, earning a spot in the CIT. In total, five Cornell players earned All-Ivy League honors during Mumphard’s time in Ithaca. In his final season with the Big Red, the team led the Ivy League in 11 categories. Cornell also ranked among the national top 10 in scoring offense (81.7), 3-pointers made (10.7) and attempted (30.4) per game, assists (17.5), steals (9.7), bench scoring, and fast break points (15.9).   Mumphard spent two years as a graduate assistant coach at Northwestern under head coach Chris Collins in 2016-17 and 2017-18. During his time in Evanston, Ill., the Wildcats made the program's first NCAA Tournament, advancing to the second round in 2017. He played a role in the development of All-Big Ten players Bryant McIntosh, the school's career assist leader, and Scottie Lindsey. In addition to his work on the court, he coordinated opponent scouts and film breakdown and opponent exchange and was a liaison between the staff and players. In his first season, Northwestern posted its first winning conference season in 49 years and set a school record for wins in a season. Northwestern also garnered its first Top 25 ranking in seven years. Mumphard earned a Masters in Sports Administration in addition to his coaching, graduating in 2018. Mumphard began his coaching career at his alma mater under the direction of Dr. George Barber. In his second year on the sidelines, Greenville won a conference title with a 12-6 mark in the St Louis intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC). During his stay, the program also earned its first NCCAA Top 25 ranking.   As a player, Mumphard was a two-time all-conference and all-region selection at Greenville. A two-year captain, he was named to the academic all-conference team three times. As a senior, Mumphard led the conference in assists and free throw %, while ranking eighth in scoring. He graduated cum laude in 2014 with a dual degree in History/Political Science and Business Administration. He later earned his M.B.A. from Greenville in 2016.

Marcus Filien

Coach

Marcus Filien joined the Tribe men’s basketball staff as the director of operations in August of 2024. In his first season in Williamsburg, Filien helped W&M one of the top turnarounds in the country, a 7.5-game improvement, to finish with 17 wins. The 17 wins were the 12th most in program history. The Tribe posted an 11-7 record which ranked as the eighth-best conference improvement in the country. In 2024-25, W&M ranked among the national leaders in adjusted offensive tempo (18th), fastbreak points per game (16th), 3-pointers made per game (15th), bench scoring (eight) and assists (25th). The Tribe’s 336 made 3-pointers in 2024-25 ranked second in school history and are the sixth most in CAA history.   Filien played for Earl as a forward at Cornell and earned his degree from the Ithaca school in industrial and labor relations in 2023. He spent last season as a graduate student at UAlbany, playing in 27 games with 15 starts.   During his career at Cornell, Filien played in 68 games and served as a team captain during his final season in 2022-23. Over his last two years with the Big Red, he helped lead the program to 32 wins and appearances in the four-team Ivy League Tournament. As a senior, Cornell finished the season at 17-11.   Filien spent a prep season at Phillips Academy Andover after standout high school career at Albany Academy. He guided the Cadets to the state federation final as a senior on his way to earning all-state and Times Union All-Star team honors.   Filien’s father, Pat, was a long time college basketball coach with stops at Southern Vermont, Lock Haven, C.W. Post, Vermont, UAlbany, Air Force, and Kansas City. He was the first athletics director and head men’s basketball coach for Bryant & Stratton College in Albany for three years prior to his passing in 2021.
