Kelsey Hinton

Head Coach

Hinton enters her second season as an assistant coach with the William & Mary womens gymnastics team. In addition to being instrumental in all aspects of the program, she also serves as the recruiting coordinator. I couldnt be more excited to have Kelsey joining the staff, head coach Mary Lewis said at the time of Hintons hiring in 2015. With her experience as a collegiate gymnast on a top 25 program, she knows what it takes to perform at a high level under pressure. I think that will help our athletes to be even more focused and prepared for competition. Besides that, Kelseys enthusiasm and passion for the sport makes her a great fit for our program. Tribe gymnasts benefited from Hintons tutelage during her first season in Williamsburg, as the team tied for second at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship. Individually, Brittany Stover highlighted the Tribes accomplishments and was selected as the ECAC Athlete of the Year prior to placing 12th in all-around at the NCAA Athens Regional. Additionally, Tribe gymnasts combined to win four ECAC individual titles, while 11 gymnasts were selected to the ECAC All-Academic Team. Highlighting the regular season was an exciting dual meet victory against North Carolina on Senior Day at Kaplan Arena.      A four-year all-around competitor at North Carolina State (2004-08), Hinton joins the Tribe staff after serving as the Class Program Manager and Girls Team Coach at Kidsport Gymnastic Academy in Burlington, N.C. During her eight-year tenure with the Academy, she was responsible for a wide range of duties that included creating practice plans, providing private lessons, evaluating talent, overseeing various special projects and managing the building. Highlighting Hintons accomplishments at KGA was being honored as the 2015 North Carolina Coach of the Year. In addition to Hintons work at KGA, she has served as a camp counselor at N.C. State since 2006 seven years as a master staff member and worked as a recruiting consultant at College Prospects of America from 2011-12. Actively involved in the community, Hinton has volunteered with the American Diabetes Association, Habitat for Humanity and promoted African American issues awareness. Hinton graduated from N.C. State with a bachelor of science degree in sport management in 2008. Kelsey Mann

Head Coach

After leading the William & Mary women’s gymnastics team to one of the most successful seasons in recent history, head coach Kelsey Mann returns for her seventh year leading the Tribe. During Mann’s head coaching tenure in Williamsburg, W&M student-athletes have combined to earn 18 All-GEC honors, 86 GEC Scholar-Athlete Awards and 70 WCGA Scholastic All-America accolades. The program’s success was on display during the 2025 campaign when W&M earned the program’s highest win total in a decade and equaled its second-most victories during the last 16 years. Additionally, W&M placed fourth at the GEC Championship and posted the 10th-best beam score in school history during the dual meet against Penn. Individually, four Tribe standouts combined to earn five all-conference honors, as Caroline Blatchford garnered first-team accolades on bars at the championship meet while Hannah Burke (vault) and Melanie Faulkner (beam) earned second-team distinction. Additionally, Faulkner (beam) and Sarah Wozniak (bars) garnered regular-season all-conference recognition.   W&M gymnasts also excelled in the classroom, as 18 members of the squad earned GEC Scholar-Athlete awards, 16 were honored as WCGA Scholastic All-Americans and 14 garnered W&M’s prestigious Provost Award for academic excellence. The 2024 campaign produced numerous memorable highlights, but perhaps none was more impressive than the team’s school-record 193.920 National Qualifying Score, which bettered the program’s previous mark of 193.770 set in 2015. En route to breaking the record, W&M posted multiple performances that ranked among the best efforts in school history, highlighted by the sixth (194.925 at Temple) and seventh (194.825 at Towson) best team totals in school history. Additionally, the Tribe earned scores that ranked among the program’s top 10 on vault, bars and beam, which included the third-best total in school history on bars (49.000 at Towson).  In addition to the collective success, a number of Tribe standouts posted tremendous seasons individually in 2024. Highlighting the group was a contingent of five gymnasts who earned All-GEC honors during the regular season – Sarah Kuper (vault), Caroline Blatchford (bars), Madeline Frazier (beam), Grace Costello (beam) and Michelle Ngo (floor). Additionally, Sarah Kuper earned first-team all-conference honors on vault at the league championship meet. Tribe gymnasts also continued to thrive academically, as 20 members of the squad earned GEC Scholar-Athlete awards and 16 garnered WCGA Scholastic All-America distinction. Additionally, 12 standouts earned W&M's prestigious Provost Award for academic excellence.   During the 2023 campaign, Mann continued to build upon the program’s upward trajectory as she led the Tribe to the team’s most victories since 2018. Additionally, a trio of gymnasts earned all-conference honors during the regular season while another garnered the distinction at the Gymnastics East Conference Championship.   W&M also continued its tradition of excelling in the classroom as 17 members of the squad were selected as WCGA Scholastic All-Americans and earned GEC Scholar-Athlete Awards, while 14 garnered W&M’s Provost Award. During the previous season a trio of standouts earned all-conference honors, while the team concluded the year by posting its best score of the 2022 campaign at the inaugural Gymnastics East Conference Championship. Additionally, 15 members of the Tribe were honored as GEC Scholar Athletes after excelling in the classroom, while 14 were named WCGA Scholastic All-Americans.   Despite being limited to abbreviated schedules due to the pandemic in 2020 and 2021, both seasons featured successes in the gym and in the classroom.   In 2021, W&M ranked 10th in the nation with a team GPA of 3.81, as 10 standouts garnered Women’s Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA) Scholastic All-America honors.   Among the many highlights from the 2020 season were two outstanding performances that ranked among the program’s all-time top 10 list, while the Tribe etched its name in the program’s top-10 lists three times on bars and twice on vault.   W&M standouts also posted some of the best individual performances in school history, as Katie Waldman set a program record on bars and recorded the fifth-best score in all-around while Erika Marr registered the fourth-best mark on vault.   In addition to the record-setting performances a number of Tribe standouts were recognized with all-conference honors for their outstanding seasons, as five members of the squad combined to earn nine All-ECAC accolades in various events.             Tribe gymnasts also excelled in the classroom as 13 standouts were honored as Scholastic All-Americans by the WCGA, while seven were named to the ECAC All-Academic Team.   After four tremendously successful seasons as W&M’s assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, Mann was named head coach of the program in August, 2019.   The Tribe posted three top-three finishes, including two runner-up efforts, at the ECAC Championship during Mann’s four seasons as an assistant. Additionally, W&M standouts combined to win seven ECAC individual titles and 24 all-conference honors at the league championship during those four seasons.    In addition to the success in the gym, W&M also excelled academically during her tenure as an assistant and earned 34 NACGC Scholastic All-America honors.   A four-year all-around competitor at North Carolina State (2004-08), Mann joined the Tribe staff after serving as the Class Program Manager and Girls Team Coach at Kidsport Gymnastics Academy in Burlington, N.C. During her eight-year tenure with the Academy, she was responsible for a wide range of duties that included creating practice plans, providing private lessons, evaluating talent, overseeing various special projects and managing the building. Highlighting Mann’s accomplishments at KGA was being honored as the 2015 North Carolina Coach of the Year. Mann also serves as the NCAA Gymnastics representative for the WeCOACH Coaches Council. Mann graduated from N.C. State with a Bachelor of Science in Sport Management in 2008.

Mary Lewis

Lewis' 23-year tenure as the head women's gymnastics coach at William Y Mary, the Tribe program has distinguished itself with competitive success in the gym and academic excellence in the classroom. Evidence of the success can be found in the program's six Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships and the numerous national scholar-athlete citations earned by Tribe gymnasts under Lewis' guidance.  A two-time ECAC Coach of the Year, Lewis' six conference championships include three consecutive titles from 2001-03 and back-to-back titles in 2014 and 2015. In addition to the collective success experienced by the team, a number of Tribe gymnasts have also garnered individual accolades under Lewis' tutelage. Since taking over the program in 1995, Lewis has coached 18 different gymnasts to 30 total NCAA Regional appearances. Additionally, Lewis' gymnasts have claimed 27 individual ECAC titles, as well as ECAC Athlete of the Year honorees during each of the last four seasons and ECAC Specialist of the Year selections during two of the past three years (2014, 2015). In addition to success in the gym, Lewis has stressed the importance of academics. This is evident by the programs seven NCAA Public Recognition Awards, which honors teams who rank among the top 10 percent of their sport nationally in the most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR). W&M experienced tremendous success during the 2016 campaign, as it came up just shy of earning the programs third-consecutive ECAC title by tying for second at the league championship meet at Kaplan Arena. Brittany Stover highlighted the Tribes individual accomplishments was selected as the ECAC Athlete of the Year for the third straight season and placed 12th in all-around at the NCAA Athens Regional. Additionally, Tribe gymnasts combined to win four ECAC individual titles, while 11 gymnasts were selected to the ECAC All-Academic Team. Highlighting the regular season was an exciting dual meet victory against North Carolina on Senior Day at Kaplan Arena.      The 2015 season proved to be another outstanding year for the Tribe, as the squad claimed its second consecutive ECAC title and sent three gymnasts to NCAA Regionals. Additionally, Brittany Stover was honored as the ECAC Gymnast of the Year for the second consecutive season, Maggie Lundeen was chosen as the ECAC Specialist of the Year and Larson Lasek was recognized as one of four Scholar-Athletes of the Year. Additionally, five Tribe gymnasts combined to earn 10 all-conference honors, which was highlighted by three league titles by Stover. The New Albany, Ind., native went on to place ninth in all-around at the NCAA Auburn Regional. W&M gymnasts also excelled in the classroom, as 10 standouts were selected to the ECAC All-Academic Team, while Stover earned the prestigious Martha Barksdale Award. The 2014 campaign produced a number of record-setting performances, as the team set the vault record versus Bridgeport (49.125) and posted the programs second-best scores on beam (49.050 at ECAC Championship) and floor (49.225 vs. Bridgeport). Individually, Brittany Stover broke her own school records in all-around (39.500) and on vault (9.950) The Tribe claimed the programs fifth ECAC title behind outstanding performances by a number of gymnasts in 2014. In addition to winning the team championship, Brittany Stover was honored as the leagues Gymnast of the Year, while Brandy Stover was selected as the Specialist of the Year. Additionally, five Tribe standouts combined to win nine all-conference honors. Following the conference meet, Brittany Stover competed as an all-arounder at the NCAA Regional and placed ninth, bettering her 13th-place showing at the meet during the previous season. The 2014 ledger also produced a number of record-setting performances, highlighted by its effort at George Washington when it posted the programs top all-time score on vault (49.025). The season was also highlighted by posting the programs fifth-best score on beam (48.725) in a home quad meet, while Brittany Stover set school records in all-around (39.175) and on vault (9.925). The 2013 season also produced tremendous success, as four gymnasts represented W&M at the NCAA Regionals. Brittany Stover highlighted the performances by placing 13th in all-around, while Jessica Pritchard (all-around), Brandy Stover (beam) and Maggie Lundeen (floor) also competed at the event. It marked the third consecutive season in which multiple Tribe gymnasts qualified for NCAA Regionals. In addition to the regional appearances by the quartet, W&M standouts earned a number of other accolades in 2013. Pritchard was honored as the ECAC Co-Gymnast of the Year, while Brittany Stover was selected as the ECAC Rookie of the Year. Additionally, Brittany Stover claimed the ECAC all-around title and Lundeen won the floor title, while the duo combined with three other Tribe gymnasts to garner a total of eight all-conference honors a the league championship.  During the 2012 season, Kristin Milardo was chosen as the USAG Collegiate Senior Gymnast of the Year, while she also earned USAG Collegiate All-America distinction in all-around and on vault and bars. Pritchard (all-around, bars, beam), Stacia Ruse (floor) and Brandy Stover (beam) also garnered USAG Collegiate All-America honors following their impressive performances at the season-ending national meet. Both Pritchard and Milardo also competed at the NCAA Fayetteville Regional as all-arounders and placed 10th and 12th, respectively. A trio of Tribe gymnasts earned All-ECAC distinction at the league championship, as Stover tied for the individual title on beam while Pritchard garnered first-team accolades on bars and Milardo earned second-team distinction on vault. Although regional appearances by Cream and Beck highlighted the 2011 season, the team also accumulated a number of other honors. Beck posted a third-place finish on beam at the USAG Championships, while four W&M gymnasts earned All-ECAC distinction at the league championship. The 2010 season was highlighted with the team's second-place finish at the ECAC Championship and an appearance at USAG Nationals. Individually, Beck placed 13th in all-around at NCAA Regionals, while three gymnasts combined to earn five USAG All-America certificates. Additionally, five Tribe standouts combined to earn 10 All-ECAC honors. The 2009 season was also a successful campaign for the Tribe, as the team earned the program's best showing at USAG Nationals with a third-place finish. Milardo's 12th-place finish in all-around at the NCAA Regional highlighted the squad's individual performances. She also earned a pair of USAG Collegiate First Team All-America certificates on vault and floor, while Jen Stack and Karla Bercaw garnered first team-honors on bars and vault, respectively. Additionally, four W&M standouts combined to earn seven all-conference honors at the ECAC Championship.  The 2008 season also provided a number of highlights, as Waldman not only qualified for the NCAA Regional for the second consecutive season but also claimed the all-around championship at the USAG Collegiate Nationals. Waldman also earned first-team All-America certificates on bars and beam, while Stack and Ali Medeiros claimed top-10 finishes and first-team distinction on bars. The team piled up a bevy of all-conference accolades as well, as Waldman garnered three first-team honors and was the champion on bars, while Stack earned first-team accolades on vault and bars. Stephanie Bevan and Medeiros claimed first-team certificates on beam and bars, respectively, while the squad also picked up four second-team honors.  During the 2007 season, Lewis sent two gymnasts to the NCAA Southeast Regional, as Long and Waldman both qualified as individual participants for the competition. It marked the fourth time in her career that Lewis had two gymnasts qualify for regionals. Long made her second career appearance at regionals as an all-arounder, while Waldman became the 10th different Tribe gymnast under Lewis to reach regionals.  W&M also made its second-straight appearance in the USAG Collegiate Nationals in 2007, and the Tribe once again took home a number of individual honors. Waldman and Christina Padilla earned USAG first-team All-America honors with Waldman getting the distinction on floor and Padilla receiving the accolades on both vault and bars. Additionally, Long (all-around) and Medeiros (bars) were named USAG second-team All-Americans. During the previous season, the Tribe made its first trip to USAGs under Lewis, earning a fourth-place finish in the team competition. Tribe gymnasts garnered nine different USAG All-America honors, including Brittany Gibbs and Jess Randall, who shared the USAG individual national championships in the floor exercise.  Following the 2006 season, Lewis was recognized by her peers as the ECAC Coach of the Year for the second time in her career. That season, the Tribe earned a second-place finish at the ECAC Championship, the program's best finish since winning three-straight league titles from 2001 to 2003. Lewis also saw Tribe gymnasts earn 11 all-conference awards, including an individual vault conference title by Brittany Gibbs. Additionally, Christina Padilla was honored as the ECAC Scholar Athlete of the Year, while seven gymnasts earned ECAC All-Academic Team honors.  Lewis has been coaching collegiate gymnastics since 1991, when she was the head coach at Longwood College for the 1991-92 season. She joined the staff at James Madison University in 1992 and served as a graduate assistant until 1994, before taking over the program at the College.  Lewis graduated Magna Cum Laude from CNU in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in governmental administration and public management. She completed her master's degree at JMU in kinesiology and adult fitness in May of 1994, graduating Summa Cum Laude.  Lewis spends her summers working at the Woodward Gymnastics Camp in Woodward, Pa., organizing weekly schedules for campers ranging in levels from beginner to elite. She has a son, Zachary, who is a senior at VCU.

Kendall George

Assistant Coach

Kendall George enters her second season as an assistant coach with William & Mary women’s gymnastics.   In addition to being instrumental in all aspects of helping lead the program, she works primarily with the vault and beam lineups, as well as helping coordinate recruiting responsibilities. George made an immediate impact during her first season in Williamsburg helping lead the Tribe, as W&M earned the program’s highest win total in a decade and equaled its second-most victories during the last 16 years. Additionally, W&M placed fourth at the GEC Championship and posted the 10th-best beam score in school history during the dual meet against Penn. Individually, four Tribe standouts combined to earn five all-conference honors, as Caroline Blatchford garnered first-team accolades on bars at the championship meet while Hannah Burke (vault) and Melanie Faulkner (beam) earned second-team distinction. Additionally, Faulkner (beam) and Sarah Wozniak (bars) garnered regular-season all-conference recognition.   W&M gymnasts also excelled in the classroom, as 18 members of the squad earned GEC Scholar-Athlete awards, 16 were honored as WCGA Scholastic All-Americans and 14 garnered W&M’s prestigious Provost Award for academic excellence. George joined the Tribe after a standout collegiate career at Northern Illinois University where she was a four-time WCGA Scholastic All-American and a fixture in the beam lineup. Additionally, she served as a coach at NIU gymnastics summer camps multiple years.   A four-year standout, George competed as the Huskies’ leadoff on beam in 40 meets during her career, while she also contributed on vault and floor. A consistent performer who regularly earned a 9.700 or better on beam, she posted a personal best of 9.850.   In addition to excelling in the gym, George also distinguished herself in classroom and garnered numerous academic accolades. The four-time Scholastic All-American also was a three-time Academic All-MAC Team member and earned the KTA Top Scholar Award for Highest Class Ranking. She also garnered the 1A FAR Academic Excellence Award and was named to the Dean’s List every semester of her career. Her individual success helped propel NIU to become the nation’s top-ranked academic team in 2021.    George graduated from NIU with a bachelor’s degree in journalism in 2024, earning summa cum laude distinction. She also completed minors in sport management, communication and sport journalism.

Mike Powell

Coach

Mike Powell enters his seventh season leading the William & Mary men’s and women’s gymnastics programs as the Director of Gymnastics. Prior to assuming his current position, Powell served as the men’s head coach for three seasons after a one-year stint on the staff as an assistant in 2016. Highlighting Powell’s tenure with the Tribe are three of ECAC Men’s Coach of the Year honors (2017, 2020, 2021) and a selection as the 2021 College Gymnastics Association East Region Coach of the Year. Additionally, he led the men’s program to the NCAA Championships twice (2021, 2025) and a conference title in 2017. In 2024, he was honored with the prestigious Plumeri Award for Athletics Leadership Excellence, which recognizes and rewards outstanding coaches and staff whose core virtues and accomplishments help to define excellence in intercollegiate athletics at William & Mary.   His men’s teams have produced 66 NCAA Championship individual qualifiers (in addition to the two team appearances), 82 all-conference postseason honors and 64 USA Gymnastics Collegiate All-America accolades. Highlighting those individual distinctions are two NCAA All-Americans, four USAG Collegiate National Champions, four Nissen-Emery Award finalists, four USAG Collegiate Senior Athletes of the Year and three ECAC Senior Gymnasts of the Year.   In addition to the success in the gym, W&M has continued to build upon the program’s outstanding legacy of academic excellence under Powell’s direction, as the Tribe men’s program claimed its ninth CGA team title in 2018 with a combined grade point average of 3.531. W&M also earned second-place finishes in 2019, 2020 and 2022.   Individually, Tribe men’s gymnasts have garnered 113 CGA All-America Scholar-Athletes awards during Powell’s tenure, which includes 93 first-team selections (through 2024). Highlighting the academic standouts is Jacop Gliozzi, who is a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-America At-Large selection.   The tremendously successful 2025 season produced a number of memorable highlights, as the squad rose as high as No. 10 in the national rankings and earned a bid to the NCAA Championships for the second time in the last five years.   In addition to the collective success, a number of Tribe standouts posted outstanding seasons. The lengthy list of standouts was highlighted by Connor Barrow, who won the USA Gymnastics Collegiate national title on vault, and Ricky Pizem, who claimed the ECAC title on high bar. Additionally, Luke Tully was honored as the ECAC Rookie of the Year, while Sam Lee earned one of the conference’s sportsmanship awards.   In total, four Tribe gymnasts garnered USA Gymnastics Collegiate All-America honors, while five W&M standouts earned all-conference accolades. Additionally, a school-record five Tribe gymnasts competed in the finals at the NCAA Championships. The Tribe also continued to distinguish themselves in the classroom as 17 members of the squad were honored as CGA Academic All-Americans. W&M’s women’s team also completed another successful season in 2025, as it earned the program’s highest win total in a decade and equaled its second-most victories during the last 16 years. Additionally, the squad placed fourth at the Gymnastics East Conference Championship. Highlighting the 2024 campaign were a number of standouts who posted tremendous seasons. Led by the USA Gymnastics Collegiate Outstanding Senior Gymnast, Aidan Cuy, 10 Tribe standouts were individual qualifiers at the NCAA Championships. Additionally, W&M gymnasts combined to earn eight USAG Collegiate All-America honors and seven All-ECAC accolades. Additionally, Alek Kuzmenchuk was selected as the featured Student-Athlete Speaker at the NCAA Championships, while he also became the fifth Tribe men’s gymnast to be inducted into the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa Society during Powell’s tenure. He led a group of 12 standouts who garnered W&M's Provost Award for academic excellence.   The Tribe’s success in the classroom was highlighted by a third-place finish in the CGA Academic Team Standings, while 13 standouts earned Academic All-America honors.   The W&M women’s program also posted one of the most successful seasons in program history, as it set a school-record 193.920 National Qualifying Score (NQS). In total, Tribe gymnasts combined to win nine USAG Collegiate All-America honors and six All-ECAC accolades.   W&M gymnasts also distinguished themselves academically, as 13 standouts were named to the ECAC All-Academic Team while 10 earned CGA All-America Scholar-Athlete distinction and nine garnered W&M’s Provost Award.      During the 2022 season a school-record 12 individual qualifiers for the NCAA Championships. Additionally, four gymnasts combined to earn five USA Gymnastics Collegiate All-American honors, while the team secured nine All-ECAC accolades, highlighted by Christian Marsh’s winning performance on rings.   W&M also excelled in the classroom as 11 standouts were selected to the ECAC All-Academic Team, while Alek Kuzmenchuk garnered the NCAA Elite 90 award for earning the highest cumulative grade-point average of all the student-athletes competing at the national championships. Additionally, nine Tribe gymnasts were named CGA All-America Scholar-Athletes, while W&M placed second nationally with a combined grade point average of 3.453. The women's team also excelled academically, as 15 members of the Tribe were honored as GEC Scholar Athletes while 14 were named WCGA Scholastic All-Americans.   The 2021 season was remarkable for many reasons, as the men’s team successfully navigated the challenges of the COVID-19 global pandemic to earn the program’s first NCAA Championships bid since 2014. Andrew Lyubovsky highlighted the Tribe’s efforts at the national championship meet, as he became the eighth gymnast in program history to garner NCAA All-America distinction with his sixth-place performance on parallel bars.   In addition to the national recognition, W&M placed second at the ECAC Championship meet as nine Tribe standouts combined to earned 15 all-conference accolades for finishing among the top six in various events and all-around. Additionally, Sam Lee was selected as the league’s Rookie of the Year and Jordan Kula as honored as Most Improved.   The success led to multiple Coach of the Year accolades, as Powell was selected as the top head coach in the ECAC as well as the East Region by the CGA.   W&M also continued to excel in the classroom as 12 standouts garnered W&M’s Provost Award, while 13 gymnasts garnered CGA first-team All-America Scholar-Athlete distinction. Additionally, Spencer Schrandt was inducted into the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa Society, joining recent Tribe men’s gymnastics initiates Jacopo Gliozzi, Peter Makey and David Allen. The women's program was also tremendously successful in the classroom and finished 10th nationally in the academic team rankings, while 10 standouts garnered WCGA Scholastic All-America distinction.   In his first year as Director of Gymnastics, both the men’s and women’s programs experienced tremendous success. Honored as the 2020 ECAC Men’s Co-Coach of the Year, the squad finished the year ranked 13th nationally and was on pace to once again produce a number of NCAA individual qualifiers before the season was cut short due to the COVID-19 global  pandemic. Five men’s standouts combined to earn seven USAG Collegiate All-America honors, while four members of the squad combined to garner five all-conference accolades, including Zane Petras who was selected as the Co-Most Improved Gymnast.   Andrew Lyubovsky provided one of the season’s most memorable performances by setting a school record on high bar at Army. His impressive routine (14.6) ranked as the nation’s best score in the event during the 2020 campaign. Lyubovsky also etched his name in the Tribe’s record book on parallel bars by tying the program’s second-best score in the win against Springfield at Kaplan Arena.   In addition to the success in the gym, the men’s program continued its tradition of excellence in the classroom as 15 standouts garnered CGA Scholastic All-America honors en route to the team placing second in the nation with a combined grade point average of 3.572. Additionally, nine members of the squad earned W&M’s Provost Award while six garnered USAG Scholar-Athlete distinction. David Allen ’19 was inducted into the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa Society, while the team earned the NCAA Public Recognition Award after garnering an elite APR score.   Among the many highlights from the women’s 2020 season were two outstanding performances that ranked among the program’s all-time top 10 list, while the Tribe etched its name in the program’s top-10 lists three times on bars and twice on vault.   W&M standouts also posted some of the best individual performances in school history, as Katie Waldman set a program record on bars and recorded the fifth-best score in all-around while Erika Marr registered the fourth-best mark on vault.   In addition to the record-setting performances a number of Tribe standouts were recognized with all-conference honors for their outstanding seasons, as five members of the squad combined to earn nine All-ECAC accolades in various events.             Tribe gymnasts also excelled in the classroom as 13 standouts were honored as Scholastic All-Americans by the WCGA, while eight members of the squad earned W&M’s Provost Award and seven were named to the ECAC All-Academic Team. Additionally, the team earned the NCAA Public Recognition Award after garnering an APR score that ranked among the top 10 percent of all Division I women’s gymnastics programs.   As head coach of the men’s program in 2019, Powell led W&M to third-place finishes at the ECAC Championship and the USAG Collegiate National Championships. Tribe gymnasts performed well at the pair of postseason meets and collected nine USAG Collegiate All-America accolades and seven All-ECAC awards. Additionally, W&M matched a school record for the third consecutive season with 11 individual qualifiers for the NCAA Championships, which included a school-record three standouts who advanced to the event finals. Jacopo Gliozzi highlighted the individual recognition, as he was named a Nissen-Emery Award Finalist, USAG Collegiate Senior Athlete of the Year and ECAC Co-Gymnast of the Year. Academically, 11 standouts earned CGA All-America distinction, as the squad finished second in the national academic team rankings with a cumulative grade point average of 3.412.   In 2018, W&M finished at the ECAC Championship and the USAG Collegiate National Championships. Additionally, Powell helped a school-record 11 Tribe standouts qualify as individuals for the NCAA Championships – an impressive figure that matched the school record set under his direction in 2016.   En route to the second-place finish at the 2018 conference championship, seven W&M gymnasts combined to earn nine all-league honors, including four individual event titles. Additionally, Griffin Antle was selected as the league’s Senior Gymnast of the Year while David Watkins was chosen as the Most Improved Gymnast of the Year.   Highlighting the 10 Tribe standouts who combined to earn 12 USAG Collegiate All-America honors in 2018 were Peter Makey, who won the rings title, and Antle, who was selected as the USAG Collegiate Senior Athlete of the Year.   Powell posted a tremendously successful first campaign leading W&M in 2017. Honored as the 2017 Eastern College Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, he led the Green & Gold to a league title – the fifth in the program’s history. En route to winning the conference championship, three Tribe gymnasts claimed individual event titles and 10 standouts combined to garner 14 all-conference accolades. Additionally, a school-record 11 Tribe gymnasts qualified as individuals for the NCAA Championships. Highlighting those individual accomplishments were sophomore Jacopo Gliozzi, who earned NCAA All-America honors on pommel horse, and senior Rob Meyer, who was honored as the ECAC Senior Gymnast of the Year. The successful 2017 campaign has also included a second-place finish at the USAG Collegiate National Championships. Among the many notable performances at the National Championships was Meyer’s winning effort on parallel bars, while five Tribe standouts combined to earn 10 USAG Collegiate All-America honors.   After being selected as W&M’s assistant coach in July 2015, Powell led the Tribe to a successful 2016 campaign. In addition to helping nine Tribe gymnasts qualify for the NCAA Championships, four W&M standouts garnered USA Gymnastics Collegiate All-America honors. Rob Meyer highlighted those honorees, as he claimed the USAG Collegiate national title on parallel bars. While the success in the gym was notable during his lone season as an assistant, Tribe gymnasts also continued to distinguish themselves in the classroom by earning the National Academic Team title for a record eighth occasion. A 2004 graduate of W&M, Powell was a four-year member of the Tribe men’s gymnastics team and helped the program win four USA Gymnastics Collegiate Championships. Additionally, W&M won a national academic team title and two second-place designations from the College Gymnastics Association during his career at W&M. Highlighting Powell’s individual accolades was the prestigious Benjamin Stoddert Ewell Award, which he received at W&M Commencement for exemplifying a well-rounded liberal arts education through his activities and academic studies. After years of coaching in his hometown of Columbus, Ohio, Powell accepted the Education Coordinator position at MHG Gymnastics in Minneapolis, Minn., in 2011 where he was a vital part in developing a prominent program. Throughout his career, Powell helped coach teams and individuals who have earned multiple USA Gymnastics state and regional championship titles, medaled at the Junior Elite and Junior Olympic Nationals, and qualified to the senior national P&G Championships.  Powell has a national coach certification through USA Gymnastics as well as a national level judging certification through the National Gymnastics Judges Association. He is also currently a member of the NCAA Men’s Gymnastics Committee. Between receiving his bachelor’s degree from W&M and earning a Master of Divinity degree from Trinity Lutheran Seminary, Powell served as a volunteer in India for the Young Adults in Global Mission. He went on to found the Young Adults in Global Mission Twin Cities Group and became a founding member of the YAGM Alumni Leadership Team, tasked with creating an alumni network for the organization. Since then, Powell has helped collect and organize alumni data, plan alumni events, create an alumni newsletter and social media presence, and spearheaded the creation of annual alumni scholarships. He and his wife, Sharon Powell, an immigration attorney, reside in Williamsburg with their daughter, Mira.
