The Kellie Catanach Johnson File Coaching Experience 2026-pr. William & Mary, Head coach 2022-25 Duke, Associate head coach 2019-21 Duke, Assistant coach Playing Experience 2008-11 Duke Coaching Awards 2021 AVCA Thirty Under 30 Kellie Catanach Johnson was named William & Mary volleyball’s 11th head coach in December 2025. Catanach Johnson most recently was the associate head coach of the Duke Blue Devil women’s volleyball team. She joined the Blue Devil staff as an assistant in 2019 and was promoted to associate head coach in 2022. Catanach Johnson was the recruiting coordinator and responsible for training and program administration. In 2021, she was honored as a member of AVCA’s Thirty Under 30 list. Prior to Duke, Catanach Johnson was Director of Education Services in the Student-Athlete Academic Services department at Florida State University. She was responsible for day to day operations of educational services and was a liaison to advisors. During her playing career at Duke, Catanach Johnson was a four-year letterwinner and three-time All-American who starred on a team that made four NCAA appearances and won two ACC Championships. She was the 2010 ACC Player of the Year and she finished her career ranked ninth in assists in the ACC. She had at least 1,000 assists in her four seasons on the team and she was the team captain during her last two years at Duke. Catanach Johnson’s love of volleyball started early. Her dad, Chris Catanach, coached volleyball at the University of Tampa and in his 42-year illustrious career won four National Championships and was named AVCA National Coach of the Year five times. “My sister and I basically grew up in the gym,” she said. “First we were chasing balls and when I got older I got to do some things with the team.” Catanach Johnson graduated from Duke in 2012 with a Bachelor of Art’s degree and she earned a Master of Science degree in Sport Management from Florida State in 2015. She will be joined in Williamsburg by her husband Dezmond Johnson, eight-month-old daughter Evie and their dog Bentley.

Emma Minnick
Assistant Coach
Emma Minnick joined the William & Mary volleyball staff as an assistant coach in December 2023. She works with the team's setters. A 2023 graduate of William & Mary, Minnick earned her Master of Business Analytics at the Raymond A. Mason School of Business while completing her collegiate playing career at W&M. In the summer of 2023, she interned with W&M volleyball, building on her coaching experience in the club and camp sector. In 2022, Minnick served as an assistant coach with the South Carolina Elite Volleyball Club, working with the 18's group. She aided primarily with coaching offensive strategy, in addition to facilitating and building relationships within the club program. A native of Radford, Va., Minnick had an impressive collegiate career as a setter, spending her first three years at Charleston Southern (2019-21) before transferring to W&M where she played two seasons from 2022-23. Over the course of her career, she amassed over 2,400 assists with 6.35 assists per set and totaled 740 digs. In her final season in 2023, Minnick led the Tribe with a career-high 30 aces on the season and recorded five double-doubles with double-digit assists in all but one of the Tribe's matches. She earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a minor in sports communications from CSU in the spring of 2022.

Stephen Trefethen
Assistant Coach
Stephen Trefethen joined the Tribe volleyball staff prior to the 2021 season as a volunteer assistant coach. He assists primarily with pin hitters and liberos. Known to the team as "Prof", Trefethen is a full-time mathematics professor at William & Mary, a position he has held since 2016. A volleyball fanatic, he has played the sport for 10 years and participated in NAGVA and USAV tournaments located all over the country. Trefethen was honored as a recipient of the William & Mary Values in Action Award in June 2023, which is awarded to a nominee who epitomizes the college's values of belonging, curiosity, excellence, flourishing, integrity, respect and service. Trefethen studied as an undergrad and earned his master's at SUNY Potsdam in 2011, and later received his doctorate from the University of Arizona in May 2016.
