Robert Moore

Head Coach

Moore was named the sixth head mens basketball coach at Columbus State University in April 2010. Moore, who spent six seasons (1994-2000) as an assistant coach under the Cougars all-time winningest coach, Herbert Greene, is now in his seventh year in charge of the Cougars entering the 2016-17 season. Coming off an outstanding 2014-15 campaign, Moore used nearly an entirely new roster on his way to an even better season. The Cougars went 21-8 and captured the 2015-16 Peach Belt Conference regular season championship, the program's first regular season title in a decade. The regular season success led the Cougars back to the NCAA Tournament, marking the first time the Cougars made back-to-back postseason appearances in 10 seasons as well. For his efforts, Moore became just the second CSU men's basketball coach to garner PBC Coach of the Year honors. In 2014-15, leading the Cougars to a 22-8 overall mark, an appearance in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament championship game and an NCAA Tournament appearance. The 22 wins was the program's highest total since the 2005-06 season. Leaving an early impression, Moore and the Cougars exploded to help revive the program in just his second year at the helm. After a 9-8 start to the 2011-2012 regular season, Moore guided CSU to a 10-5 mark to close out the season including winning the final three games heading into the Peach Belt Conference Tournament. In the PBC Tournament, Cougar Magic returned to the Lumpkin Center as the Cougars played three thrilling games including winning two overtime games to advance to the finals.  It was the first PBC Tournament final appearance for Columbus State since 2005 as they fell to eventual Division II national runners-up, Montevallo.     With their resurgent run, the Cougars reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2006 and finished the season with an 18-12 mark, the first winning season for the program since the 2006-2007 campaign.   By taking the Cougars to the NCAA Tournament in his second season, Moore became the fastest coach in CSU history to take his squad to the postseason surpassing Greene who reached the national tournament in his third season at the helm.   Under his guidance, six players have earned All-PBC honors. Moore has also had six players move on from the CSU program and sign professional contracts. Moore arrived at CSU with 18 years of coaching experience - 10 of those in a head coaching role, the most recent five years spent at Brookstone School in Columbus as the head boys basketball coach. Prior to his stint at Brookstone, Moore was the head coach at Tift County High School in Tifton, Ga. While at Tift County, Moore was named Georgia Sportswriters Association 5A Boys Coach of the Year after he led his team to the state championship game. He accumulated a record of 47-12 and won back-to-back region titles at the school.   Moore served two seasons as the head coach at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and set a school record for wins in a season with 21 in 2002 before making the move to Tift County. That record was the best mens basketball record at the school since 1982. In the six seasons as an assistant coach to Herbert Greene at Columbus State, Moore was a part of two NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen appearances, one Peach Belt Conference championship, and three PBC Tournament championships. During that span, CSU appeared in the PBC Tournament title game five times and made three overall NCAA postseason appearances.  Moore is a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and is very active on campus with the African American Male Initiative program. In addition, Moore won the 2014 Outstanding Staff Award at the 2014 CSU Legacy Celebration.  Moore has one daughter, Basharra, who is a CSU student, and also has a son, Tre.
