Devin Smith

Head Coach

Smith will begin his fourth season as an assistant coach for the Concord University baseball team in 2016. Under head coach Kevin Garrett, Smith works with all facets of the program. While Smith does help with several duties within the program, Smith works with Concord's hitters and outfielders most closely. In Smith's first season as an assistant coach, he helped all-region outfielder Bret Blevins become one of the best players in program history. Last season, Smith worked with then-freshman outfielder Andy Szamski as he earn Mountain East Conference Freshman of the Year and be named an all-region player. During the 2016 season, Smith tutored Concord's hitters to bat .333 which was second in the MEC. Additionally, Chad Frazier was the individual MEC batting champion under Smith's watchful eye. A total of seven Concord players batted at least .300 for the season. For the second consecutive year, Smith worked with the MEC Freshman of the Year, Trevor Wiersma as he finished top 15 in the MEC in batting average, doubles and RBI. Off the field, Smith is the recruiting coordinator for the Mountain Lions. Concord has brought in double-digit recruits in the first two seasons Smith has been in the position of recruiting coordinator including Szamski.   After a standout playing career for the Mountain Lions, Smith began his coaching career in 2014. He helped lead Concord to a 38-16 record and the second seed in the inaugural Mountain East Conference Tournament in addition to a top-six ranking in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region through the majority of the year. The 38 wins were a school-record.   Smith coached 12 players who earned All-Mountain East Conference recognition, three all-region selections and two All-America honorees in Joey Miller and Bret Blevins.   Prior to joining the Mountain Lions coaching staff, Smith was an all-region player for Concord from 2009-13. A versatile player who played a variety of positions over his career, Smith appeared in 153 games hitting .328 with 114 runs scored, 13 home runs, 122 RBI and 28 stolen bases. On the mound, Smith went 11-8 with 100 strikeouts in 137.0 career innings pitched.   Smith, a native of Wytheville, Virginia, ranks sixth in Concord history in games started by a pitcher, eighth in doubles (44) and ninth in stolen bases. Smith has one daughter, Lyla. Smith resides in Princeton.
