Coxs 16 th year in charge of the Concord University track & field / cross country program. One of the top coaches in the region, Cox is a seven-time West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in addition to being named the first Mountain East Conference Womens Track & Field Coach of the Year at the conclusion of the 2013-14 season. During the 2015-16 season, Cox picked up two more coaching accolades as he earned MEC Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year after helping the Mountain Lions to their first conference cross country title since 2007. In the spring, he was voted by his peers as the men's track and field conference of the year. Not only did CU win the men's cross country title in the fall of 2015, but a total of six runners were named all-conference including three on the first team. Freshman Jason Weitzel was also selected as an all-region performer after finishing 24th at the NCAA Division II Atlantic Meet. During the track season, Concord finished second at the conference meet with a program-record 142 points and four individual titles. Weitzel won both the 3,000-meter steeplechase and 5,000-meter run as he earned all-region in track. Cox guided the Concord mens cross country team to WVIAC titles in 2004 and 2007 while leading the womens team to conference gold in 2010. As Concords cross country coach, Cox has led 44 all-conference runners, three WVIAC Runners of the Year, one first team All-Atlantic Region honoree and NCAA Championship qualifier. The mentor of CUs track & field program, Cox has coached six athletes to the NCAA National Championship meet, more than 40 WVIAC champions, three WVIAC Championship Most Valuable Athletes and three WVIAC Rookies of the Year. Cox has also coached one national champion, Shawnee Carnett, who won the 800-meter run title at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championships and the 2014 NCAA Indoor Championships. The national championships were the first by a Concord athlete. At the inaugural MEC Outdoor Championships in 2014, Cox coached 14 runners to all-conference accolades as well as four conference champions in Donnie Kirk (400-meter hurdles), Carnett (800-meters / 1,500-meter run) and the 4x400-meter relay team of Demi Kirk, Donnie Kirk, Carnett and Sherrice Williams. In the MEC, Concord has coached 11 conference champions, two rookies of the year and numerous all-conference athletes in three seasons of the conference track championships. Prior to entering collegiate coaching Cox attended Virginia Tech, where he qualified for the USA Junior National cross country team as a freshman and competed internationally in Budapest, Hungary. At Virginia Tech, he was a member of seven conference championship teams. Individually, Cox was a three-time all-conference runner, a two-time Atlantic 10 10,000-meter run outdoor champion and an indoor 5,000-meter run conference champion. Cox was a highly decorated prep athlete at Athens High school, winning nine state championships, earning All-America honors and being named the West Virginia Track and Field Athlete of the Year in 1993. He still holds the West Virginia Class AA record in the mile, with a time of 4:17.54. As a professional, Cox qualified for the Olympic marathon trials in 2004 and 2007. Cox lives in Princeton with his wife Tabitha. They have two boys Miller, 6, and West, 3.
