Sean Kelly

Head Coach

Kelly, a former assistant at the University of Portland, was named the 12th head women's basketball coach in Concordia University history on June 6, 2014. Concordia is Kelly's first head coaching position after spending 15 seasons (1999-2014) as the first assistant at the University of Portland under longtime head coach Dr. Jim Sollars. His tenure with the Pilots, members of NCAA Division I and the West Coast Conference, included two NCAA Postseason appearances (2008-09, 2009-10). "I am thrilled to have a coach of Sean's caliber lead the Concordia Women's Basketball program. I am confident Sean is the right person to guide the growth of our program as we look ahead to the transition to NCAA Division II," CU Athletics Director Matt English said. "Sean and his family will be a wonderful fit for the culture here at Concordia. He understands the importance of building a championship culture and creating a positive experience for our student-athletes. With his recruiting ties and his knowledge of the Northwest, he will be able to hit the ground running." Prior to the University of Portland, Kelly spent three seasons as a head men's assistant at his alma mater Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Wash. Kelly graduated from Pacific Lutheran University with a degree in business administration in 1995 and played two seasons with the Lutes as the team's starting point guard. Ranked No. 8 all-time in school history, Kelly shot 42 percent from 3-point range during his career with the Lutes. He also played two years of junior college basketball at Monterey Peninsula College in Monterey, Calif. "First off, I want to thank the administration, especially Mr. English, for this incredible opportunity," Kelly said. "Concordia is a small university with big expectations. I feel blessed to come into a wildly successful department and get to work alongside so many successful coaches while being at a university with athletes that are also tremendous all-around people. I look forward to building onto the tradition that has already been established and I'm excited to see how far we can take this program in the future." Kelly and his wife, Marianne, reside in Portland, Ore., with their three sons Aidan, Kiernan and Teagan.
