Melanie Hambelton
Head Coach
Hambelton joined the Concordia family after a stellar career as head coach at Estacada (Ore.) High School. Concordia volleyball made immediate headlines in its inaugural season of NCAA DII when the team opened the season with a 3-1 upset over perennial power Grand Valley State University, a team coming off a national 'Final Four' appearance. The 2015 CU squad went on to start the season with a 9-0 record and finished with an even mark (10-10) during its first run in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play. Before moving to NCAA Division II in 2015, Hambleton's teams never placed lower than fourth in the Cascade Collegiate Conference standings. She finished with a six-year record of 109-56 (.660) during the NAIA era while her career winning percentage of .658 is the second best in school history. Overall, her career record stands at 127-66. Hambelton capped the school's NAIA tenure with an appearance at the 2014 NAIA National Championships, the team's first national bid since 2001. Her teams finished with back-to-back 14-4 marks in the CCC standings and advanced to the CCC championship match in 2013. The team topped out at a No. 24 ranking in the national poll and returning to the CCC tournament championship. Despite falling to College of Idaho for the second straight season, the Cavs were invited to the NAIA National Championships, losing to Vanguard in the opening round. In 2013, Hambelton guided the Cavs to its best record and its first national ranking since 2002. Compiling a 23-7 overall mark, Concordia topped out at a No. 19 national ranking while marching its way to a pair of wins in the CCC Tournament before falling to top-seeded College of Idaho in the title game. After the season, three players earned All-CCC honors while senior setter Lindsay Mangan and junior middle blocker Mariah Raudsepp were named as an honorable mention NAIA All-Americans. In 2012, Concordia finished with a 17-10 overall record (.630) and fourth in the league standings with a 13-5 mark in conference play, earning host responsibilities for the opening round of the CCC Tournament in which the Cavs dispatched Northwest Christian University 3-1. Hambleton guided the Cavs to a 15-10 overall record in 2011, the program's fourth-straight winning record and third-straight under Hambelton. The Cavs also finished 10-8 in conference play, which tied them for fourth in the CCC. The Cavaliers would have advanced to the CCC tournament with their 10-8 record, but lost the chance due to a back-of-the-rule-book tiebreaker. In 2010, Hambelton led Concordia to a 19-9 overall record and a 14-4 conference record, good for third place in the Cascade Collegiate Conference standings. The Cavaliers won all of their conference matches except for their contests against nationally-ranked College of Idaho and Southern Oregon. Concordia posted sweeps in 11 matches and concluded its season against College of Idaho in the first round of the CCC Tournament. In her first year, Hambleton led the Cavaliers to a 16-10 overall record and a 13-5 mark in Cascade Collegiate Conference matches to finish tied for third in the league standings. The Cavaliers earned a spot in the CCC Tournament where they met top-seeded College of Idaho. The Cavaliers posted sweeps in half of their wins and were a stellar 6-2 in five-set matches. In 19 seasons at the helm at Estacada, Hambelton posted a 605-149 record while taking 16 teams to the state championship tournament. She guided the Rangers to eight state title matches, including two state championships. Hambelton was a five-time league coach of the year as well as the 2003 and 2005 Oregon Athletics Association 3A Coach of the Year. During her tenure, 25 players went on to compete at the collegiate level. In 2008, the community of Estacada renamed the high school gymnasium the Melanie Hambelton Court. At the club level, Hambelton has also been a coach and director with the LOCOS Volleyball Club based out of Estacada. As a player, Hambelton played one season at Arizona State before transferring to Portland State. She helped push the Vikings to the AIAW championship game in 1981, where PSU fell to the University of Texas. Hambelton graduated from PSU in 1983 with a degree in education. E-Mail: The school record holder with 127 career wins, Melanie Hambelton will begin in her eighth season as the head coach of the Cavaliers in 2016.
