Bob Bartel
Head Coach
Bartel, the all-time wins leader in Concordia softball history, enters his 13th season at the helm of the Golden Bear softball program in the 2017 season. He's led the Golden Bears to the NCAA Tournament four times including three trips to the Sweet Sixteen along with a pair of NSIC Tournament Championships. Bartel has coached the team to seven 30-plus win seasons in his 12 years and has won at least 27 games in nine of 12 years. Prior to Bartel, the Concordia softball program had just four 30-plus win seasons. His 351 wins are the most all-time in school history, his record breaking win came in the NCAA Central Regional Championship in 2012. In his first two years, Bartel led the Golden Bears to back-to-back school record 44-win campaigns, a pair of NSIC Championships and back-to-back appearances in the NCAA North Central Region Championship game. His 2005 squad captured the regional title while the 2006 team finished as regional runner-up with a Sweet Sixteen appearance. After the strong start to his head coaching career, Bartel guided the Golden Bears back to regional prominence, reaching the NCAA Tournament in two of three years between 2010 and 2012 including the 2012 run to the NCAA Central Region title game for the program's third Sweet Sixteen finish under his leadership. He's coached the program's only NFCA All-Americans, Kristen Schmidt (2005 2nd Team) and Anna Bjorlin (2010 3rd Team); along with Daktronics All-American Brynn Larsen (2011 3rd Team). In addition, Bartel has mentored 41 All-NSIC First Team performers, the 2005 NSIC Pitcher of the Year (Schmidt) and the 2006 NSIC Player of the Year (Amanda Yurek). Prior to being named head coach in February of 2005, Bartel served as an assistant under Tom Rubbelke for seven seasons. Rubbelke was appointed to the athletics director position during the 2004-05 academic year, creating the opportunity for Bartel to lead the team to immediate success. During Bartel's seven years assisting Rubbelke, the Golden Bears posted a 220-124 record, won three NSIC Tournament titles and made two trips to the NCAA Tournament. Rubbelke and Bartel would work together again in 2009 to bring the softball team a permanent on-campus home: Carlander Field, as the construction of Sea Foam Stadium created a facility opening as the soccer team vacated their former home field behind Gangelhoff Center and adjacent to Barnes Field (baseball). In addition to his coaching, Bartel also assists with game management duties for Concordia home athletic events.
