Jasen Wise

Head Coach

Wise, the winningest coach in program history, has helped the Falcons set a new season wins mark in three of his four seasons at the helm. In 2015-16, Wise led the Falcons to an 11-win season, the most in program history. CUW finished the year with an 11-12-3 record, which included a win over a top-10 opponent for the first time in program history (2-1 at No. 8 UW-Eau Claire). The Falcons posted three wins over ranked opponents in 2015-16, having only one such victory in program history before the season. The Falcons qualified for the NCHA Harris Cup Playoffs for the third straight season under Wise in 2015-16. CUW competes in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association, one of the best conferences in all of Division III hockey. CUW won 10 games in 2013-14 under Wise, producing a 10-13-4 overall record. In his first season (2012-13), Wise took a program which had never won more than four games in a season, and guided them to seven victories. In year three, Wise and the Falcons won eight games.  The Falcons have also succeeded in the classroom under Wise, having led the NCHA in All-Academic selections in both 2013-14 and 2014-15. In 2014-15, CUW had a tied for league-best nine players earn All-Academic honors. A year before, the Falcons placed a school-record 14 players on the All-Academic team. In order to qualify for All-Academic honors, a player have a 3.30 GPA. Last season, the Falcons placed eight more players on the All-Academic Team. In 2013-14 the Falcons set several program records, including most points scored and most goals and assists in a season. Wise led CUW to a six-game winning streak during the middle of the season, the longest such streak in program history. CUW also qualified for the NCHA Tournament, playing in the quarterfinal round against St. Scholastica. In addition Wise had coached several players over the past three seasons who have set program records. Among those is defensemen Eli Riddle, who set the career record for assists.  The Falcons also had one other first happen under Wise, appearing in a national poll. CUW has appeared in the USCHO.com poll four times over the past three years, three of those coming in 2013-14. The Falcons also made a couple appearances in the D3Hockey.com Poll, receiving votes on two separte occassions in 2013-14. Wise came to CUW after eight seasons as the head coach at Marian University. Under his guidance, MU reached unprecedented heights advancing to the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association Tournament eight-consecutive seasons, earning the program's first 20-win season and having the school's first All-American. His program was included in the USCHO national poll several times. He was named the MCHA Coach of the Year twice (2007-08 and 2009-10). Wise also served as the Men's Golf coach and was the Lake Michigan Conference Coach of the Year in 2004. During his time at MU, Wise directed the Sabres to seven straight winning seasons, including a school-record 20-7-0 season in 2009-10 which included a 15-game winning streak. Wise has coached 21 All-MCHA players, 14 MCHA All-Rookie Team honorees, four MCHA All-Tournament choices and five MU Male Student-Athlete-of-the-Year selections. Wise also coached 14 players who went on to play professional hockey. In addition, he has coached 44 MCHA All-Academic student-athletes who have achieved a grade point average of 3.00 or higher. In his final season with MU he directed his program to a pair of wins over nationally ranked MSOE and a tie against the NCAA Division III defending national champion, St. Norbert College. Wise's team was ranked among the national leaders in several statistical categories, including 14th in power play (23.5 percent), 20th in penalty kill (84.6 percent), 21st in scoring offense (3.58). In 2010-11 Wise coached Dakota Dubetz who became MU's first USCHO All-American after leading the nation in assists (34). Wise also saw 14 of his student-athletes be named MCHA All-Academic, the second-most among conferences institutions. Wise compiled a 119-88-14 overall record during his time at MU, including a 101-46-9 (.676) MCHA record. His teams won three-consecutive MCHA Northern Division titles. Prior to arriving at MU he spent five seasons as the men's assistant coach at Hamline University. While at HU he was involved in all aspects of the hockey program, including recruiting and practice. Wise is no stranger to the NCAA Division III hockey landscape, as he was a team captain as a player at the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) during his senior year. He helped the Tommies to a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title during his junior year. Wise was the recipient of the Team Player Award his junior and senior seasons. He began his collegiate playing career at Rochester Institute of Technology, where he was an assistant captain on a squad that made an NCAA Tournament appearance. During his time with the Tigers he won the Craig Lauzon Memorial Award for 1st Year Leadership. In his four years as a collegiate hockey player Wise posted some impressive numbers. He finished his career skating in 105 career games, finishing with 110 career points. He amassed 50 career goals and added 60 assists in his time at RIT and St. Thomas. Wise earned his Bachelor's Degree in 1996 and also earned his Master's Degree, in athletic administration, from UST in June 2004. His hockey background dates back to his youth days where he spent his high school playing career at West Anchorage (Alaska) and International Falls (Minn.) High School, which included playoff and state tournament appearances. From there he spent two seasons in the United State Hockey League, playing for the Dubuque Fighting Saints and the Rochester Mustangs, making a National Tournament appearance in 1990-1991. Wise played in 83 games during two seasons in the USHL and totaled 51 points. He scored 22 goals and added 29 assists, while also totaling 140 penalty minutes. Wise and his wife Rachel have a son, Ethan, and a foster son, Noah.

Zach Gaynor

Assistant Coach

Gaynor has been an assistant coach for the Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Hockey program since March 2012. Gaynor was hired by head coach Jasen Wise and the two have helped CUW to its three most successful seasons in school history. Midway through the 2015-16 season Gaynor was promoted to the title of Assistant Head Coach. Gaynor's main duties include recruiting and helping with the defensive side of the ice.  Gaynor plays a big part in the recruiting for CUW, helping recruit several talented players who have made their mark on the program over the past two years. The Falcons had two freshmen, Brett Penner and Riley Storzuk, score 20+ points in 2013-14, the two highest marks by freshmen in CUW history. Gaynor also works extensively with the Falcons penalty kill unit. In 2013-14 CUW had a five-game stretch where they did not allow a power play goal, killing off 26 consecutive opponent power plays in a row. Gaynor has an extensive hockey background that began at a young age. He played Juniors in Springfield, Mo., as well as in Nipawin, Saskatchewan. He also played for the University of Oregon in the ACHA during the 2007-2008 season, when they won their division title and made an appearance at regionals. After playing hockey at UO, he moved to Fond du Lac, Wis., to play hockey at Marian University. While obtaining his undergraduate degree in business administration with an emphasis in sport and recreation management, Gaynor was asked to help coach the Marian University team under Wise. During their three years together at MU they coached a 20-win season, two-straight Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association Tournament Championship appearances, and the school's first All-American. He is currently in the process of obtaining his MBA from CUW.

Dan Rowland

Assistant Coach

Rowland will begin his first season with the Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Hockey program during the 2015-16 season. Rowland brings experience from the youth, high school, and collegiate levels to the Falcons, and also played collegiately at the Division III level. Rowland previously served as the Director of Hockey Operations and as an assistant coach at the Bethel University. While at the Bethel, Rowland helped with player development, as well roster composition analysis. Rowland also organized quality in game video for analyzing and in game adjustments. He also played at Bethel University for two seasons after transferring from Salem State. While a player at Bethel, Rowland helped lead Hockey skill camps and taught English in Erzurum, Turkey for under privileged children. He graduated from Bethel with a degree in Business and a minor in Marketing. Rowland also has experience in coaching at the high school level as he was an assistant coach at Waltham High School in during the 2014-15 season. He also served as a Development and Operations Intern for the Waltham Youth Hockey League. Rowland also has spent time as an Assistant Director of Hockey Operations for the Ward Hockey School and the Beantown Bullies of Boston. Rowland has also served as a Team Leader at the Massachusetts Player Development Select Camp. He held this position in both the summer of 2009 and 2010. Rowland is currently pursuing a Master's of Science Degree in Student Personnel Administration from Concordia Wisconsin, with a concentration in Athletic Administration.

Rustin Clewein

Coach

Clewein, an NCAA National finalist in the 200-Meter and outstanding receiver while at Concordia University Wisconisn, is a Certifed Strength and Conditioning specialist. He is also a Personal Trainer (National Strength and Conditioning Association) and a Senior level USA Olympic Weightlifting Coach. Clewein has been the Director of Human Performance at CUW for the past three years. He has worked with student-athletes from the high school, collegiate, and professional levels.
