During his career with the Hawks, he claimed two Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference 800-meter titles and qualified for the NCAA Championships three times. A former standout at Northwestern High School in Baltimore, he was a qualifier for the United States Indoor Championships in the half mile in 1994.  Carl Hicks is in his 13th year as head mens cross country/track and field coach at Coppin State after starting as a volunteer assistant in 1993. During his tenure at Coppin State, he has helped the mens and womens cross country programs win seven Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference crowns, and the womens track program claimed indoor and outdoor league titles in 1996. Coppin State also produced four All-Americans on the track in the 800 during that time.
