Carl Hicks

Head Coach

Hicks served as head coach of both the mens and womens programs his first two years at the helm before concentrating his efforts solely on the mens squad in 2002. Prior to becoming a full-time coach, Hicks worked several years as a program analyst for the Maryland Department of Human Resources. He received his bachelors degree in business administration in 1993 from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, where he set school records in the 800 and 1000 and as a member of the 4 x 400 relay team. During his career with the Hawks, he claimed two Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference 800-meter titles and qualified for the NCAA Championships three times. A former standout at Northwestern High School in Baltimore, he was a qualifier for the United States Indoor Championships in the half mile in 1994.  Carl Hicks is in his 13th year as head mens cross country/track and field coach at Coppin State after starting as a volunteer assistant in 1993. The Baltimore native worked in that capacity until being named assistant in 1995. During his tenure at Coppin State, he has helped the mens and womens cross country programs win seven Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference crowns, and the womens track program claimed indoor and outdoor league titles in 1996. Coppin State also produced four All-Americans on the track in the 800 during that time. Since he took over the reins as head coach, the mens squad has set 22 school records on the track and produced 14 conference champions. He also guided the Eagles 4 x 800 relay team to the College Division Championship at the 2001 Penn Relays. Lawrence Givens

Assistant Coach

Givens has guided his pupils to school records, MEAC titles, and NCAA Regional qualifications during his time at Coppin State University. During the 2014-15 season, Givens guided junior Shane Green to a third place finish in the triple jump at the MEAC Outdoor Championships with a leap of 15.32m /50-3.  Green also finished fourth at the 2015 IC4A Outdoor Championships with a leap of 15.41m/50-6.5 and broke his own school record in winning the Coppin State Last Chance Meet with a leap of 15.58m/51-1.25. Green capped of his outdoor season by qualifying for his third straight NCAA East Regionals. Green also has a 7.40m/24-3.25 personal best in the long jump. Senior Devin James had a consistent 2014-15 season, which saw him qualify for the MEAC Indoor and Outdoor Championships. James also qualified for the IC4A Outdoor Championships by jumping a personal best 7.22m/23-8.25. In all, Givens impressive resume includes coaching three individual MEAC Champions, four All-MEAC Performers, six school-record holders, four NCAA East Region qualifiers, and one Pan-American team member (Bronze Medal High Jump-Brandon Baskerville 2011) Givens is a 1993 graduate of The University of Maryland-Eastern Shore with a degree in General Studies Construction Management and excelled in the high jump where he was the 1990 MEAC Indoor & Outdoor champion. Givens has a high jump personal best of 2.16m/7-1. He is a native of Baltimore, Md. where he attended Northwestern High School and graduated in 1988.          Lawrence Givens is entering his 16 season as the assistant coach for jumps for the Coppin State University mens track and field program. Pat Simms

Assistant Coach

Simms set the school record in the 60-meter dash. He also helped the Eagles set school records in the 4 x 400-meter relay both indoors and outdoors, 4 x 200-meter relay and in the outdoor sprint medley. Simms was coached by Earnest Barrett and Carl Hicks, and he served as team captain his junior and senior years. An excellent student, he was a three time recipient of the MEAC Commissioners All-Academic award. Simms received his degree in Management Science from Coppin State in 1999. He went on to earn his Masters of Art in Teaching (MAT) and an Administrator 1 certification from Goucher College. He also holds a USATF Level 1 certification. The native of Clarendon, Jamaica, is a Special Educator in Baltimore County Public Schools. While at Coppin State, he was also a member of the International Student Association and served as a mentor for incoming freshmen.
